This is not a studio recording. If it were not for someone with a cassette recorder in the audience, this performance would not be available for you to hear. I have done considerable noise reduction and EQ to get it in the form you hear in this video.
Nice post-years ago in the early '80s Carl and Bill Berry played a concert with our h.s. band and played this tune uptempo version much like this really great recording-God bless you
My favorite post-swing jazz trombonist, Carl Fontana. I once asked Bill Watrous what his favorite Fontana solo was, and he promptly replied, "All of them." Thanks for sharing this!
This was Recorded in the 1970s ... i believe at the old Tender Trap in Las Vegas. i got a bootleg cassette from a fellow trombone player Dale Kirkland while we were on Buddy Rich's Band in the fall of 1977. Dale was on Woody Herman's band with Jim Pugh and Gary Anderson. Woody's band was in Las Vegas on the day Carl played at the Trap. this was recorded on a portable cassette deck. we all had them with us back in the day. After CF's solo you can hear Woody's trombone section going nuts over CF.
well lucky we are you captured it anyway. but I have a grouch with modern recording habits, they feel a trombone is a second cousin of the french horn(hunting horn) so they remove it halfway into the forest. Whereas in the older days,Boob Brookmeyer and JJJohnson, Teagarden and similar are close to my ear beautifuly creaming it close by.
His Tone is Fabalous!!
Dave and Jake are playing with Carl on the majority of live performances we hear. I miss Carl so much.
The finest jazz trombone that I have ever heard. He makes it sound so natural.

Incredible, thank you so much

Carl Fontana... The Master!
I don't think Carl ever played less than superior, but this has to be some of his very best IMO.
This is a kicker! What a treat!
Thanks so much for sharing! Carl is definitely one of my favourite trombone players.
Awsome performance thanks Rob
Thank you. This is awesome.

U
why so meager in sound , they knew how to record JJJohnson . This is only half what it should be,
But absolute perfect playing . Bit like Rosetta.
Brilliant Herman! I never noticed the changes are so similar.
IMGSOY has a few more measures though.
It was recorded at a nigh club withy a portable cassette recorder.
