I have always hated the Rogue exterior styling. This however, looks good. Subaru just needs to bring back the Turbo engine, in the Forester. No, I don't want to settle for the Outback. Andrea and Zack, good work on pointing out, both the advantages, and disadvantages of either model.
Yes, Subaru really needs to put the turbo option in the Forester. I have read and watch some videos about some new engine options coming up 4 Subaru. auto manufacturers are up against the clock as they are no longer going to be allowed to develop new gas engines.
Just bought the Subaru Forester premiere package and I love it even though it is my wife’s car. Once owned a Nissan Sentra and the cvt was awful. Also rust issues after two years. Will never buy a Nissan ever again

Nissan I’ve noticed usually has the nicest looking exteriors at decent prices. The way they hold up though without major repairs is the concern. I have an older rogue, so mechanical improvements are welcomed.
Just went with the Rogue. We got the Platinum level and love it. I have been a life long Subaru fan and I truly do love the way they drive and are set up and I know they will go forever, but I have a 2018 Rogue and like it with my one complaint being the power. @@tipit0086 I drove 2 different Nissans before buying a Subaru. All my vehicles bought from new. This is my opinion from my experiences. Subaru is a better all around vehicle.
I'm for the Forester since I own a 2016 Forester XT. The new Rogue is very nice. A big concern is how reliable the smaller engine would be on 3 cylinders. Trying to cram all that HP into a smaller engine to move a big car or suv, I question how long it would last before they break down.
So the 3 cylinders have arrived in North America as well. We have them a couple of years in Europe now, but nothing rides better than a 4 cylinder. Not speaking about durability on the long term.
@@redwhite_040 yep same here, id rather have the 4 cylinder. But in terms of engine reliability i do not think its gonna be that much different from the 4 cylinders, especially with todays technology
These opinions are very much stuck in a 80-90's mindset. Nissan has been putting turbos on cars and making them reliable for decades. I had a turbo 240z that had 200+ thousand miles and didn't burn a drop of oil. Most car manufacturers have figured things out for decades now. Not only that, Nissan has been developing this engine and the tech for it since pre-2014, when they put it's grandfather into a Le Mans Hybrid racecar. That 3cyl 1.5l turbo made 400hp and 285lb-ft. Smaller engines and reliability are not mutually exclusive.
@@jeffmorse645 That may be true where you live, but not around here. AWD is just a drag on the mileage and isn't needed. So, they rust just as fast as any other car, the mpg is kinda crap, *and* they actually rank lower in reliability overall than Nissan. So yeah, the Rogue is a smarter choice with a higher resale value around here. In this pairing.
@@rickitynick4463 The Rogue is on the bottom rung as far as depreciation goes along with the VW Tiguan and Mitsubishi Outlander. The Forester, RAV4 and CRV are all better with the Mazda CX-5 in the middle. I'm not saying they're bad - have a family member who's owned a Rogue for 8 or 9 years and its been trouble free for her. I'm just saying all things being equal I'll choose car with better resale value. Maybe in your local market that isn't the Subaru but I'd wager nearly anywhere else it is. BTW, Consumer Reports ranks the Forester a notch better in reliability than the Rogue.
@@jeffmorse645 Well, true, older Nissans didn't appreciate very well, but the newer ones are a different story. The thing is, once you account for the cost of ownership, you'd BETTER get that money out of the Sub, because it cost you more to own over the life of the vehicle. So I guess my point is I'd rather have a more economical vehicle that is just as reliable, easier to live with, more fun to drive, and costs me less to own over the life of the car than hoping/counting on getting bit more $$$ when I sell it. EDIT: You weren't kidding about a 'notch' What is it? 82 vs 83? Yeah, so the Forester ranks a notch above the Rogue, Nissan in general ranks a notch above Subaru. Eh, let's call it a wash )
Small displacement engine with turbo charge means a higher rev'ing engine. How will this engine hold up over a 10 year life time that I tend to keep my vehicle? I really do not want to be the test subject for Nissan.
2022 Rougue Platinum is the way to go. Specially the Two tone white pearl exterior color with tan interior is such a beauty. I know it since I bought one.! Beauty, comfort, power and technology are all in one. .
I like the Subaru Forester very much and it is near the top of my list to buy. However, its lack of power is very underwhelming and could derail it as a choice. Since your reviews on the Nissan Rouge have come out, I am now seriously considering it as one of my top choices. I agree completely with Andrea about the horsepower and torque and the design is totally acceptable. In passing situations and entrance onto the expressway from off-ramps the power and torque are necessary. Unless Subaru comes out with a more powerful engine, like a turbo, a hybrid, or a plug-in hybrid, I'm afraid it will fall off my list of choices.
God forbid you buy the Rogue basing on this review (or anything else basing on the reviews from these guys). The Rogue safety rating is only 4* - that is very unusual, rare case. The Forester CVT is far more advanced than what Nissan has. The Forester is a roomier, more comfortable car. The driver position is more convenient. The visibility is better. The Forester is a far better off-roader. And finally - it has enough power and torque for safe driving. If the Wilderness trim within your budget - go for it. Another trim to look at is "Sport" (not Limited, not Touring). Just forget about Nissan.
@@cruiseadmiral for 2022, both Rogue and Forrester are top safety picks. Nissan has more powerful engine, and at the same time is more efficient. Forrester is slower. Their predicted reliability ratings are almost identical (one point difference on 100 point scale). Nissan car seats comfort (the original design made in cooperation with NASA) is second to none. Rogue offers more standard features. Neither Rogue nor Forrester are off-road cars.
@@spol1622 2022 Rogue "Early Release" has 4* out of 5. The "Later Release" in 2022 has 5*. As to 3-cylinder turbo engine, it immediately puts the Rogue out of my shopping list. The Forester is a more comfortable car overall, it rides better and has better off-road capabilities. However it does not matter, because for me as a buyer, there is no question what is better. Buying the Rogue with a 3-cylinder turbo and Nissan CVT is simply out of the question. Regards.

Decisions, decisions. I have a Nissan and had my fair share of issues and most at all the wrong times and places. It still does what it needs to but the next failure will see it left on the side of the road with the keys in it. Thats how I feel about it. Strangely enough I initially wanted a Forester but the dealer was too up himself. I'm now looking seriously at a Subaru not just because of the car but also having a manufacturer that is serious about looking after you as a customer.

This was in over 100 degrees in Texas. I don’t feel like I’m lacking anything. Just wish I had that front camera. Im sure the Forester is the same.
As I understand it, the 3 cylinder engine isn’t completely new for Nissan. I believe that they manufactured a 3 cylinder, turbo charged engine about 10 years ago. Knowing that the they’ve at least tried this before, makes me feel a bit more comfortable with the engine. My girlfriend is looking at possibly purchasing a Rogue, next year. You get a lot, for the money and the new engine gives it some get up and go.
I had a rogue 180,000 I'm and traded. No problem s we had 2 Forester. One had head gasket failure, , oil consumption at 20,000 .I will buy a non CVT. Between the 2, I will choose the new rogue. Hope they do not get to expensive. I saw the cx 50 price very high. My 2 cents worth.
Almost got a forester premier until test drove Rogue. Rogue is the way to go! W/o a doubt Forester is great choice too. Very hard pick. I suggest Go with Rogue 21 model to avoid 3 cylinder engine and avoid problems in a long run
Just traded my 2017 with 170000 kilometers for a 21 much refined but no complaints from the 17 brake pads and one wheel bearing in 170000 kilometers with excellent gas mileage
Huh!, that hand gesture control for controlling cabin temperature seems very gimmicky Andrea! Rogue for I'm afraid, looks nicer and good performance and spec for the price.
Simple physics makes me think any 3 cylinder, especially turbo charged, will not last like a non-aspirated 4 cylinder. Plus, I would trust Subaru over Nissan. I own a Toyota and a Ford...
It depends on where you live. If you live at high elevation, you would probably want something with a turbo engine because a naturally aspirated engine would struggle with the low air pressure.
This engine had been in a couple of other Nissan's for a while. It is already proven, and nissan must have been improving this motor since. No tests phase is needed, surely
Rogue all the way! Owned a forester before, it needs more power. They used to have the turbo version, and if they bring it back I would consider it. But for now, Rogue is better.
J'ai acheté , bought, un ROGUE 2021, for me this the Best because l do a lot of high ways, confort and fuel efficiency , great for long trips . Off road and engine performance , may be better Subaru
I'm torn. Currently drive a 2016 Ford Explorer. Looking for better mpg, but also need storeage space. I need enough room for 2 dog crates and all the dog gears for competing in agility. Rogue has better mpg, Forester is cheaper & better in the snow....
Outlander has a normally aspirated 2.5 4 banger, very different from this new 1.5T with variable compression setup. And that engine for the Outlander is very underpowered...unless it's just a driver in it. You put a wife and 2 kids and a big dog in there, and it struggles up any incline. The Outlander would really benefit from the VC Turbo from the Rogue.
I’ve done the small capacity turbo 4 a couple of times, and it is not for me or for anyone that wants to hold onto their car for many years without spending a lot of $ on maintenance and repairs. I can’t imagine what that means for the life expectancy of a 3 cylinder turbo - not for me. Too much stress on a small engine is not a good formula unless you intend to lease for 3-4 years. I’ll take the non-turbo 2.5L Subaru.
I might be in 30’s but my heart still beats young like a teenager when i drive cars. So will go for Nissan Rogue for extra power with extra mileage. Will consider outdated forester, when i feel I’m getting old :p

Great video and a few good laughs. First of all both are great vehicles but I am toward to Forester for standard all wheel drive and a standard EyeSight. Plus big doors and windows gives you more natural lights comes in. 👍🏻👍🏻☕️☕️
It's a great choice 👍

I'm debating on what to get between the Rogue and Forester. I live in the city, I don't offroad. I just need more space because I'm 6'0ft and I feel squished in a sedan. Leaning towards the Rogue based on this review as the engine seems to be better and handles better.
I like Rogue so much. To me 3 cylinders engine is nothing to worry about. It's not today we have 3 cylinders engine in the market. For sure like Nissan kinds of big company they surely has done enough reliability test before launching the new VC Turbo engine. I'm going to get one soon .. I'm the old 2015 Rogue owner. I love it so much...
Hey guys! You should do more reviews on base trim levels. Thanks. Chris
Most people don’t buy base models.
The Rogue without a doubt.
I just order the new Rogue, I am not sure about others, but I drove a 88 Sentra, first generation of Altima, a Maxima, a Pathfinder and never has a single problem with any of these cars. Get back to the Rogue, I think the interior looks classic, just like Audi and BMW, the engine is powerful and responsive. In comparison to my current Prius Prime, it is much nicer and roomier. I am looking forward to the real life fuel economy of Rogue/
Did you get your rogue? What's the mpg you are getting ?
It's interior ccomfort is definitely unmatched.
I have recently been looking for an AWD cd player so the Forester will be the one for me.
CD player? You must be very old. I'm in my 50's and no longer use CD player in my car. I use thumb drive and phone plus radio, but no CD player.
Forester great practical vehicle great reputation.
love you guys ! i'm myself debating between Outback and Rogue... i would have to test drive the Rogue definitely. Great review i did ! seems like was missing the cargo capacity and angle of the rear seat folded... which i need to sleep inside sometimes on quick camping trips. flatter sleeps better. i'm 6 ft. your thoughts ?
I would like to see Andrea and Zak's test and review of a 6 speed manual Toyota GR86 or Subaru BRZ. Waiting for your take!!
The rear-seat miming always cracks me up. Great 👍🏻 video, as always.
Nissan I’ve noticed usually has the nicest looking exteriors at decent prices. The way they hold up though without major repairs is the concern. I have an older rogue, so mechanical improvements are welcomed.
Forester.. have a crosstrek and love it. Plus changing oil is easy. Ordered a forester sport due in June.
Forester, if I were to choose between the two Good comparison
Just went with the Rogue. We got the Platinum level and love it. I have been a life long Subaru fan and I truly do love the way they drive and are set up and I know they will go forever, but I have a 2018 Rogue and like it with my one complaint being the power. The 1.5L 3 cyl VC turbo has totally changed the game in this midsize SUV world. While the Forester is still great that new engine gives it to the Rogue.
I have this new 22 with the 1.5 turbo. I think it is noisier than it should be when the turbo kicks in (for passing or accelerating). I'm also hearing a strange "whirring" noise from the engine bay. Actually louder upon decelerating, most noticeable around 45-50 mph. I drive all the time in STANDARD, as I want good mileage, don't need my Rogue to be a damn sports car and hold revs. Will be taking this into the dealership about the whirring noise, anyone else have the 22 model with the new engine with any wierd whinning noise from the engine bay (been told may be the CVT chain belt or the Alternator Clutch overrunning making the whirring noise I hear) ?
@@ofcbob6391 recently bought 2023 rogue, didn't see any such issues. I may have to drive more to understand if any issues. As of now it's very smooth, least cabin noise, has enough engine power.
@@Gopinathk17 Overall, I really do like my SV trim (best bang for the buck as they say). I really don't hear the "whirr" noise from the turbo with the radio on. My issue right now is with my heat/AC controls, will take into my dealership today to talk to them about it.
How is the reliability? I see the rogue gets terrible reviews with smell of gasoline in cabin.
Subaru is the king of all wheel drive! Better safety and reliability overall!
"king of all wheel drive"... sorry, but NO !
@@tipit0086 still better then a Nissan hands down any day!!! Not sorry.
@@travisjh9796 Oh please! Subaru are not reliable. Yes Nissan has reliability issues with some of their cars, but Nissan has always been in the top 3 with Honda and Toyota.
@@travisjh9796 actually no but no problem if you want to keep believing that!
Lol 200hp is nothing, toyota is coming out with a 300hp in a 1.6 3cylinder later this year
So the 3 cylinders have arrived in North America as well. We have them a couple of years in Europe now, but nothing rides better than a 4 cylinder. Not speaking about durability on the long term.
@@redwhite_040 yep same here, id rather have the 4 cylinder. But in terms of engine reliability i do not think its gonna be that much different from the 4 cylinders, especially with todays technology
you know the Koenigsegg has 600 HP from a 3 cylinder
Subaru definitely!!
The Subaru has vastly higher resale value than the Nissan. One of the highest vs. one of the lowest. If for no other reason that's a smarter choice.
Depends on where you are, and what model. That's no longer a gimme.
@@rickitynick4463 In that pairing it is.
No it doesn't and infact it will rev lower than the subaru actually. Going up hills and causing rpm will be lower since it has more tq.
The Forester looks like a shoe. Rogue any day.

Beauty, comfort, power and technology are all in one.
.
Do you have an updated revies for the 2023 models for both?
Regards.
Rogue - superior style and zero-gravity seats!
Drove both and roque is more quiet ride.
Would love to see both compared to CX-50.
Yes great comparisons 👌
@@andreaspencer9813 oh... And the Mazda cx50 compared to the Acura RDX and Buick Envision.
I'm leaning to the Rogue, although both are in our final group of 4.
Rogue, We've had good luck with Nissan in the past, had a 2007 Sentra that lasted ages, and we have a 2013 Rogue that has now 185,000 miles, they last forever, reliable as heck, Rogue 100%
May i know what kind of issues you faced in Nissan Rogue u have ?!
@@jackkiller21 Right drive shaft bearing failure. Crank shaft position sensor and camshaft sensor. Overheating issue caused by thermostat at 30000miles resulting in radiator failure. Serpentine belt shredded after tension bearing seized. Rear brakes locked up on highway. 2 front wheel bearings replaced from 20,000 to 40,000. All services regularly done with two dealers. Some warranted, some not. Engine and transmission have been good. This has been over a 12 year period but worst failures happened during vacations.
I choose the Rogue. The Forester is also a good buy but uninspiring and tepid looking. I am taking my chance with the new 3 cylinder engine. Of course, which company offers a more comprehensive guarantee may get my money
I own a new 2023 Subaru Forrester sport and I love it
I love all my Subarus
I have an Ascent Limited. I had wanted the touring because I did want the ventilated seats. I have found the seats breath so they aren’t hot and you don’t stick. This was in over 100 degrees in Texas. I don’t feel like I’m lacking anything. Just wish I had that front camera. Im sure the Forester is the same.
That rogue looks good
As I understand it, the 3 cylinder engine isn’t completely new for Nissan.
To be clear...must the "fight the power" incantation and gesture must be done together?
One of my sisters bought a Rogue last year and loves it.
I think so...
Hi guys ,
Great review on both.
Clomate control on forester is hail hit.. or black power. Lets see how many road rage insidents occure over this.
I had a rogue 180,000 I'm and traded. No problem s we had 2 Forester. One had head gasket failure, , oil consumption at 20,000 .I will buy a non CVT. Between the 2, I will choose the new rogue. Life is too short to drive slow vehicle. Overall, I will pick the cx 5. My 2019 turbo has 48,000 and loves to drive it yes, I will sacrifice a few miles for reliability and fun to drive. Love Mazda. Hope they do not get to expensive. I saw the cx 50 price very high. My 2 cents worth.
I had no issues with 4 of my Subarus. It comes down to owner maintenance or lack of. My two cents.

Forester
Simple physics makes me think any 3 cylinder, especially turbo charged, will not last like a non-aspirated 4 cylinder. Plus, I would trust Subaru over Nissan. I own a Toyota and a Ford...
It depends on where you live. If you live at high elevation, you would probably want something with a turbo engine because a naturally aspirated engine would struggle with the low air pressure.
The rogue is the most beautifull car out there
You must be smelling the gas fumes like the others

@floyd watt I think this post is in regards to long term reliability, not just 100,000km manufacturers warranty.
@@James-il3tq it's almost the same as the altima vc turbo and there are a few people over 100k miles on that engine now.
This engine had been in a couple of other Nissan's for a while. It is already proven, and nissan must have been improving this motor since. No tests phase is needed, surely
The same engine has been used in fewer models of Infinity as well along with Altima.
Rogue all the way! Owned a forester before, it needs more power. They used to have the turbo version, and if they bring it back I would consider it. But for now, Rogue is better.

I'm torn. Currently drive a 2016 Ford Explorer. Looking for better mpg, but also need storeage space. I need enough room for 2 dog crates and all the dog gears for competing in agility. Rogue has better mpg, Forester is cheaper & better in the snow....
I'd say the Rogue-esque Mitsubishi Outlander would be a good future comparison.
Subaru hands down... if you know you know
Next option from Nissan , three cylinder with a rope start…three cylinder …nope
Make mine a Subie
Forester is on/off road capable, unbeatable symmetrical AWD....BUT neither interests me because both has CVT, gutless engines,

Its the CVT Transmissions. Especally Nissan's history with them. Make you service them OFTEN. With Subaru, head caskets have fequently been a regular service item if you want to keep them going.
Am on my 3rd Subaru and never have had a problem with head " caskets"
Subaru head gasket was over a decade ago. Nissan CVT issues was 3 years ago.
I just got my Rogue last May and Wished that I waited for this Rogue, lol cos I find it slow, hahaha
I find them both equally appealing. I'd have to drive both and make a determination based on which one felt better.

Meanwhile these idiot buying a rogue deserve the headaches. 3 cylinder turbo cvt. What could go wrong.
Team Subaru!!!
Why don’t you simply put them on the slip test pad with the rollers and see which one to go up to wrap using one rear tire and it won’t be the Nissan
Forester for non turbo engine.
