We foster and a rescue dog came in a week ago with one puppy inside. She gave birth 48 hours ago. 4 of her breasts are very swollen with milk and I know with only one puppy I will need to help her to stop mastitis from developing. Your video is perfect. She loves the hot compresses and the compression/milk expression is helping relieve the discomfort of excess milk. We were doing temperature once a day but will do it twice now just in case. Thank you so much.
My dog is having this issue. She stopped eating and lost 20 pounds. Per the vet she had a pseudo pregnancy and from that mastitis. All of her mammary glands were 😢 her nipples were inflamed. She is on antibiotics, and so far, some of the swelling has gone down except for the back mammary glands. In about 5 or weeks after everything has subsided, the vet said we need to get her fixed to keep this from occurring again.
Oh goodness! So sorry you went through that! Very scary! Hope she is healthy now! Agree with your vet that spaying her would be best for her overall health and to make sure this situation doesn’t occur again!
She was on cephalexin. One of our vets had us use amoxicillin before, but it isn’t strong enough and the mastitis got really bad and turned necrotic and we almost lost our female. If cephalexin doesn’t take care of it we move to clavamox. All of which is safe for puppies to nurse on momma still. Good luck with your momma dog!
@@StandingStoneKennels thank you very much for replying - we caught our girl really early it’s contained to one teet , no puss or poison yet , she’s eating playing , we’ve got compresses on the go , pups still feeding well only 36 hours in but hopefully will go ok . Thanks again all the way from England
I currently have a mom thats due next week. I noticed her back 2 teats are harder than usual. Temperature is in normal range, teats doesn't seem to be sore. Could this be mastitis or just pregnancy hormones
It really depends how they feel. If they are firm like getting full of milk that is one thing, but if they have a hard dense spot in them could be the beginning of mastitis. I would reach out and consult with your vet!
My dad was a milk inspector, so I had heard about the dangers of mastitis long before I even had my own children. But the same principles apply to all mammals, whether bovine, human, or canine. Thank you for the informative video "how to treat." Bookmarked and saved! Standing Stone Kennels stands out again! You're the best! 🏆
Hi, i just wanna ask if its safe for puppys to suck on not infected teats? N is it safe for them even the mama dog take antibiotic called co-amixclab clovimed? Ty
Watching this video just made me feel so much better about how i am caring for our litter of 10 dobermans. Mom got mastitis the first litter with 9 pups and sure enough she got it again. Last time we fed the pups on her with the infection and they all got sick. I was advised not to feed on that nipple but expressing is too painful. I wasnt sure if i should just allow the pups to feed in it. She has had 2 doses of her meds now today so i think after watchimg you, i will put the pups on it and hope for the best. I have watched many of your videos before we started out last time and i found them to be very helpful...just like this one. Thank you!

Hello what antibiotics is she on ? Mines just been prescribed with “ amoxicillin “ - one vet said it’s ok for pups to feed another disagreed . Thanks

Should the puppies feed on the infected nipple? Will they not get sick?
My cat got mastitis, do they also have multiple ducts per teat like dogs? Trying to help her out.
Yes I think so, but please reach out to a vet if you're having issues! We are not cat people!
Is the compression daily
Yes, multiple times a day!

I would just confirm with your vet if puppies can nurse based on the antibiotics being used.

My dog has Mastitus and she is 5 years old and a virgin.
That is so weird and annoying!
It can happen from a false pregnancy, that’s what happened to my dog from the shelter
