I've had this idea of making an electric mandolin in the back of my head for a while. All these little details will be great info when I move that idea from my brain to my fingers...
Like the rivet
idea.
Digging this series 👌 😊
106th thumbprint - saving this 778th view for later. :0/ 7:57 - "You had me at '...but I am a Cowboy...' " LOL... that's my favorite excuse, too.
Still working up the nerve to make a neck from scratch. Lots of great tips here. Thanks for sharing!
you can do it! and if it fails, think of all you'll learn.
Regarding the fret press: I 3d printed myself a custom tool for my neck radius that gets glued to a regular bolt and then basically looks like your commercial one, to be used in a drill press. It won't last forever, but it did the job for one instrument. Perhaps that idea is feasible for someone since 3d printers are the most accessible kind of CNC machinery right now.
interesting idea! I maybe a real dense oak piece could be made into one, too.
Nice work Tim! As you noted, I also prefer doing the shaping of the body & neck of a Guitar or Bass by hand. Really wish that I could play either of those instruments. HNY, be well. 🎸🎸👍👍
Great instructional video. Super clear instructions and explanations. Like options for using hand or special tools. Mahalo for sharing! : )
Dear Tim. I’ve loved your videos for years now. Have you ever thought of making a short scale bass? Anyway thanks and keep up the great work.
Yea, I make tons of them! My personal preference is 32"like all the Apeiron fretless basses. Here's a 30" ruclips.net/video/jLRVJhhV28g/видео.html a 23.5" ruclips.net/video/_-Kig3BwMC8/видео.html another 30" ruclips.net/video/MirwxiV7AWg/видео.html a 32" ruclips.net/video/eq-aHfPWAAo/видео.html ... search my name and "bass" - most of them are 32" or less.
Dope as always, Tim!
I know straight away by the speed you speak at that I must subscribe. You're going to give me facts, fast, with no fluff, even the "spam" is simply more information with a quick plug inserted.
Cheers. That sounds like a polite way of saying "too wordy!" lol. JK, I know and appreciate what you are saying. There are a lot of things I don;t like about the way information is shared on the internet, too. I'm not trying to create cliffhangers out of molehills or make you buy something you don't want or need.
Nice Tim!!!!!
For fretless would one put some contrast wood into the fret slots, sand it flat and use a lower height zero fret?
Personally, I probably wouldn't bother with the fret lines and just put some side position markers for reference, right where the frets would be (not in between them). Then you could use a lower zero fret or carve a nut in that spot instead. check out my Apeiron bass video series for some inspiration: ruclips.net/p/PL9-JGqOmsWcru3G49HgUpDqFdfh9qgNA5
I've seen people do what you're suggesting, I've also seen what Tim's suggesting... seems to be whatever floats your boat. I kinda liked the bass I saw where they filled the fret slots with a glow-in-the-dark epoxy.
@@anonjr yea, my first fretless I made on my kitchen table by prying them out of an old ibanez with a butter knife and filling the slots with wood putty! Ugly buy worked!
Hi Tim, really good job on your instruments. Quick question, how do you avoid misalignment when you flip the blank using the pin holes? Because I tested with some of my own designs and when I flipped the blank it messed up me blank and I have to start again and do the alignment manually to avoid that issue. Thanks.
I talk about it in a million videos but I just searched Vectric's page for one: ruclips.net/video/90-5uZO9qGE/видео.html the key is to mirror the holes and make them intentionally "random" so you cant mess it up. so in one side of the work I drill 3 random holes, just a little ways in (.3" or so). then I drill flipped, mirrored copies of these holes into the wasteboard. If you try to do it all at once it will be wrong, unless you make them symmetrical, but then you could accidentally flip it the wrong way.
🤓
Alexa, make me a bass guitar.
Seems like at $209 you don't really want to sell me a neck....
My necks cost the same or less than most of those at Warmoth, etc. I can't compete with overseas factories. If you'd rather support a business model that pays children and economically trapped people non-livable wages overseas for a good deal on a neck while closing your eyes to the harsh reality of what you are buying into socially, economically and environmentally, you are sadly not alone.
