  • A lot of you have mentioned that New Sketchbook Syndrome was only the tip of the iceberg. I have heard some of you say you collect watercolor sets, brushes, markers- the list never ends. I think I found the root of the problem: Art Supply Hoarding. I hope this video helps some of you that might be struggling like I have because it’s a real thing!

    I'm not a hoarder. I just buy things at a faster rate than I can use them up. >.>
    See-through storage is definitely the best way to make sure you see and use your supplies regularly.

  • @why-bless-your-heart2040
    @why-bless-your-heart2040 8 лет назад +173

    But if I use the art supplies then I use them up on bad drawings and then when I can draw good drawings then I won't have any more art supplies. If I just keep all of my art supplies nice and safe then some day they'll infect me with their magic and I'll be able to use them to draw nice pictures.

    I bought and hoarded tons of art stuff over a long period. Even opened a small well supplied store - not from my hoard. And then disaster struck. I became very ill and eventually were medically boarded. I now receive a small pension and can maybe buy stuff once a year. But I have my hoard and how grateful I am that I did not listen to each and everyone's opinion on doing it away. I would have been stuck in bed with nothing to do. Think carefully because waste not is want not.

      I started collecting artsy supplies about 6-7 years before I retired as knew I'd be on a limited budget. So glad I did. Family and friends accused me of hoarding but I considered it "planning ahead."

  • @toomuchsara42
    @toomuchsara42 8 лет назад +14

    I'm a very late-blooming beginning artist. I think the reason that I hoard art supplies is that I'm waiting for when when my skills or a certain project seems "worthy" of using them. It's like what you described in one of your other videos about new sketchbook syndrome. (I have that too.) I'm afraid of messing them up or wasting them. It's silly. I know. Buying art supplies is well within my comfort zone, but using them is another story. I'm working on it. :)

    • @reytard2092
      @reytard2092 5 лет назад +2

      I feel you it’s like yeah I don’t need an entire set of lightfast colored pencils because no one is buying my stuff......yet but eventually they might ND I WILL HAVE THEM FOR THAT TIME or scenario 2. What if I am actually a really good artist however but only in liquid acrylic gouache so therefore I need to buy an entire set of them in order for my talent to blossom and they must be the best and most expensive .Maybe it is the scenario 3 is I have 5 copics and this limited range makes my art suck so when I get 350 markers my art will be amazing and as result be neck deep in the finest sexual partners I just need those copies

  • @KathySpiersSilverKat

    I admit I hoard but with good reason: I am poor and retired so very little money for supplies--that makes it really hard to use them as I may not be able to replace them for a while. I hate it, but it's true!!

    • @Balmorian
      @Balmorian 7 лет назад +8

      I understand, we have time or money, but rarely both. Do yourself a favor and use your supplies while they are still good and while you can. Have fun, life is too short to hide from the gusto. I wish you the very best!

    • @ellesnyder942
      @ellesnyder942 6 лет назад +1

      That just doesn't make sense- to buy some sort of art supply to use and then just not. Even if you never replace the supplies you would have the enjoyment of what you made and the process of making it. You can always buy supplies second hand off craigslist because people try things and become disenchanted. And if you have moved on from making one kind of art, then sell or give away the supplies to someone who'd appreciate it.

    • @ellesnyder942
      @ellesnyder942 6 лет назад +1

      I think it is often fear of failure. That and people are taught as kids not to waste things. Using supplies to learn something isn't a waste.

    When you take a workshop, they send you the supply list in advance. I thought that meant you needed all those supplies. It was not by design that I became an art supply hoarder. I was a victim of unscrupulous workshop leaders. That said, I have solved the problem of WHERE to keep all those supplies: just throw your other stuff away.

  • @joannaskor316
    @joannaskor316 8 лет назад +15

    My problem is that I get inspired by all your videos, jot down the supplies I need and then can't remember what I wanted them for when I go to the store or am looking through an art store website. So I solved the problem by ......getting a bigger piece of paper and jotting down the art supplies and making a note next to them what technique I want them for and where I saw. There. Problem solved :) Oh and I told my husband that I will hoard all my supplies in a box out of the way, and he told me to stop calling our house a box! ahahaha!

    Very true. I'm an art supply hoarder. At one point I had over 50 canvases, several canvas pads, watercolor pads, wooden frames, etc. I have some of my canvases to my niece as well as paints. But found myself back where I had been. So now I limit or stay away from buying supplies until I finish them. Been painting a lot lately and have made some leeway in diminishing the extra supplies.

    Started hoarding when I was doing presentation graphics on the computer years -- and could expense them. Now I'm on Social Insecurity, so I'm glad I did that, except that Amazon has so many fun things. However, now at 76, I call it art therapy and fit them into the telephone booth I live in. Just a matter of priorities. Thanks for your fun videos!

    It's like..we're connected. You feel me! In a non-creepy way. I wouldn't say I'm a hoarder...(I'm so totally a hoarder) but I do a LOT of different art thinks. My very favorite is watercolor, but I use acrylic, pencils, marker, I work with polymer clay and create miniatures, I card craft and scrapbook, make ornaments, jewelry, sew. It's kinda like when you see a Pop singer make a country album and you're like...wtf? I couldn't imagine being confined to one genre/type of art, so I don't blame them. I rotate my mediums though. January I was all about that gouache life, Feb clay all the way, March so far I'm working with my pencils again. One of my biggest issues is not wanting to throw things away I see potential in or not wanting to "ruin" things by using them (you've covered this about sketchbooks!) I'm learning to be better about that and in truth keeping your supplies together and accessible will make you use them more, it's a fact. When I sit down to work, I want instant gratification. I want everything I'm possibly going to need at the ready because if I don't scratch that itch for the idea I have, it dies. I lose motivation for it. I have a notebook of ideas I write down but they get passed up for the latest thing my thoughts concoct. I do have a problem I guess... but it's not hoarding!!! (It's so totally hoarding.)

    When I was still back at school I could swap between welding, painting, or what have you at the drop of a hat. After graduating I was left alone with my pencils and my sketch book and it was lonely. I felt restricted by my lack of creative outlets. It didn't help I worked at an art supply store, but slowly collecting and hoarding my supplies allowed me to wake up and say 'today I'm going to get back into figure drawing and finish soldering that thing I started last month". I don't have to get up like "yeah, I'd love to work on figure drawing, but I only have metal working tools", and then dejectedly go and watch TV while great works pass me by, just because I was having artists block on the metal. That's why I hoard.

    I'm on a fixed income, having had to take early retirement due to being injured at work. So, I picked up my art again,
    around 18 months ago, serious drawing and Painting started around 5 months ago. I save, I then buy the best I can afford. Yes they're professional grade, oils and acrylic paints. Why? They go further, and the pigments are truly beautiful and inspiring. I've tried student paints, and ended up giving them away. Its my birthday this week, and my partner has bought me art supplies. The art pad I'm running my hand over, is an A2, the paper is thick and creamy,I heavy and lightly toothy to the touch. Oh boy!! Its gorgeous.. My prismacolours are on their way as are my new acrylic paints. I alternate between oil and Acrylics. I also use pencils, both. Graphite and coloured. With polymer clay as a crafty medium. My one thing I hoard are Brushes. I love them, having the right brush can give an effect that make your paintings pop. I've given a lot of my first brushes away to my friends lad, at 11 he's starting High School this September. So he returned home with all the cheaper supplies I purchased when I first began art again. As I have an art degree means the knowledge Base was still strong. I didn't want to buy expensive supplies at that time incase I decided not to continue. Today I bought 6 more brushes. All Hog hair, now I have to use them. 😊Like my new pad, pencils, markers and mediums I've had bought me.. 😓 scary.. Lol

  • @PattysGarden

    You couldn't have said it better! My reasons are very similar to yours. I found I had become overwhelmed with supplies (inspired by projects I wanted to do, sometimes unknown when I re-discover the supplies!). I decided I would just dive in and start USING them! So, my NY's Resolution for 2016 was to use the supplies I have instead of purchasing new supplies. I am doing pretty well, too.

    Oh yeah I know that feeling very well. Until recently I was an art supply hoarder.
    I think it began to happen when I was a teenager and I had gotten my first job. I went from having no money except for my allowance and buying the cheaper art supplies at Walmart and various other super markets, to having money and running into the real art stores and practically throwing my wallet at them. My biggest problems were sketchbooks/paper pads, pencils, pens and brushes. Canvas panels was another one but I was lucky that I had limited space otherwise I'd have been overrun.
    During this time I used to art a lot but then I went through some personal things and soon enough I completely stopped. Buying the supplies made me feel more better than using them, but that feeling was very brief and I would round about again and feel a bit ashamed that I wasn't using these supplies like they were meant to. And then I stopped buying all together.
    This block lasted a long time but I knew that somewhere deep in me was that crazy and fearless artist I was when I was a teen so I fought tooth and nail to get myself out of the mental art funk and to do this I knew I had to do something.
    I had to purge.
    I gave a lot of stuff away, mostly to various nieces and nephews who had told me they wanted to try art because they had often watched me work. Not the expensive items of course but the ones I knew that would be easy enough for them to start and have fun with. And then I gave some away to fellow artists when I was in college.
    After the purge I have felt so much better, like I could breathe easier, and with my art area now less cluttered and exploding than it had been in the past I can sit down and eke out a few feel good sketches. I cut down all my oversized papers and keep them stored in a paper tote beside my art table and I have my markers on display where they are easily accessible and also pretty to look at. I now take only a small sketchbook along with a few of my favorite pencils and pens with me when I travel out of my home.
    I still get that urge to art hoard especially when I visit the Jerry's site but I take a deep breath and just remind myself to only grab the things I need and I only a small amount of new items I want to experiment with.
    Sorry for the loooooooonnnnng comment but I just wanted to share my experience.
    Thanks for reading if you do!
    LaDa

    I'm the heir of a hoarder, she's still with but hasn't done any art since my Dad passed. She had oils which she stopped using in the '70's. She was told not to mix brands of acrylics, she had at least 6 different ones plus a starter pack of water soluble oils (unopened) then she got into alkyds exclusively. I just unearthed a really cool Grumbacher watercolor palette with hard as rock tubes (I never knew she watercolored) plus assorted boxes of soft and oil pastels. One dating back to high school and an identical box unused. Dip pens, never sharpened pencils, 2 sets of watercolor pencils etc, etc I'm just learning and I've bought several things I clearly didn't need to like my own watercolor pencils and pastels. My niece is into oils so I found a home for them

I do have an entire craft room where I can see them all. I work in marketing and use my room as an escape from crazy business world. I love your shirt on a side note.

    Dude I was thinking about this issue today. My way to paint is to use a lot of paint. And I just used Cad Orange today which is kind of expensive pigment and I was like ... "oooh I use this now so much. I'm grateful that I have this 500ml pot. Wouldn't it be silly to just let it stay there and never use it. I could stop painting and just collect big jars of paint and never use them."

    I just donated the art supplies I don't use to quite frankly, ever want to use again to the recycling depot at my art school, so at least someone else can use them.
    It made my day seeing my old brushes being picked up by someone as I was leaving the area.
    I've recently been filling up my sketchbooks by using the premise: "if I'm bored I draw in my sketchbook." Which helped me fill in 3+ sketchbooks entirely front to back.
    Not buying a ridiculous amount of art supplies allowed me save money, since as we all know art supplies don't come cheap. Money which I can put towards tuition, spending time with my friends, and you know, just saving up for trips and/or for an emergency fund.

    Love it! Yup, I have too many art materials, which is mad when you consider that I rarely draw and paint.... I always want them so I can learn one day. Duh!
    Actually, if you want to talk about *serious* hoarding, try textile art! You can't mix thread like you can paint and so one amasses a stupid amount of stuff!

    My husband, and son are enablers. We had a complete loss house fire six years ago. I think I'm afraid of losing my supplies again. Mixed media gave me permission to want it all, and only the best. I do keep a small watercolor set, Fabrino paper, and a waterBrush in my bag at all times, just in case I'm waiting. I have several journals to bounce ideas around. I give my creations away, never sold one.

    Hi folks, My name is Mary and I"m a modest art supply hoarder. Hoarding made me feel like I would be prepared for any artistic eventuality, and maybe that new sketch book or set of pencils would even turn me into another Rembrandt. I have faced the fact that I need to practice drawing, more than I need to practice spending money. I still find that making a selection in the paper isle is therapeutic when I'm blocked, and now I share my hoard with my granddaughters as they both love to draw. Hoarding has been fulfilling on many levels.....forgive me, I succumbed this week and bought a set of F.C. polychromos I've had my eye on for a long time....(but it's my Precious and I'm not sharing it with anyone.)

    I hoard, but only the supplies that eventually get used, like paper. And being a cheapskate, I only buy it when it's a great sale which slows down my rate of hoarding considerably. I don't hoard stuff that I'll never use. Since I mainly work with pencil and ink, there aren't a lot of types of supplies I can hoard anyways. Great vid!

    Holding onto art supplies had become the stagnation of my creative process. I would not use something because I wanted to make sure I used it efficiently and not on something I ended up not liking. "What a waste!" I would think to myself. I became intimidated by them. So the hoarding began...
    Then one day I was searching the web for tips on breaking creative block and I came across the most profound information I had ever heard...
    Stop Creating An Attachment To The Investment You Made!
    It's like buying a candle and not burning it like it's intended purpose. Now that is the real waste! Not using what you have! (Like putting Baby in a corner...I hope someone out there gets my Dirty Dancing reference lol)
    So use your supplies and use them good dang it! Or like Mike said, give them to a fellow artist.

    Mike, your shirt is hilarious. With that addressed, my hoarding started at a young age. (Growing up, I think I was actually trained by my dad, who managed an art supply store for a while when I was a teen. In later years he had a real problem with this- and to be honest- it was a bigger problem for my husband and I because after he passed it took almost 3 years to go through and get rid of all his stuff.) As a freelance artist who takes all kinds of commissions I like to be prepared before I start painting my subject. Often times I will swatch out my colors before I start my project. Bottom line- I hate interrupting FLOW, so it's nice to not have to run to the store or wait for something to come in the mail. When a project gets delayed it is often abandon for a while. Fortunately its usually just my white pens that ever need replacing anymore. I used to be really into mixed media and art journaling. Then around 2015 I upgraded my watercolors to a professional brand. I never looked back. I still art journal, but its not as often. I stopped using my inks and sprays but haven't figured out where to donate them or what to do with them yet- most of them leak. I HATE throwing perfectly good stuff away... I have donated pretty much everything else I no longer use (my nephew got first dibs) the rest went to local kids and my old college art teacher for his classroom.

Acylics, watercolour, oils, mediums, plaster, pencils, copic markers, oil pastels, chalk pastels, watersoluble everythings, oh heaven! I love having complete rainbows of supplies. That's what drives me to buy sets and then be afraid to use them because then they are immediately less pristine (or worse, I'll run out of a color!). Stupid but that was my issue for my entire art life. On top of that, what if my projects don't turn out nice?
    I found my cure recently- bought the cheapest kids set on sale in a department store with the express purpose of using it up, destroying it, tearing it apart. And you know what? The paintings were actually pretty! And it planted the idea in my head "if this is what i can do with a $3 set, imagine what i could do with my $50 set! My $100 set! Oh boy!" And now i am able to use all my supplies freely 💪🏽
