  • Flown by the Allies in the Pacific, the Middle East, North Africa, Europe and Russia, the versatile A-20 went through many variants. The A-20G, which reached combat in 1943, was produced in larger numbers than any other model. By the time production ended in September 1944, American factories had built 2,850 "solid nose" A-20G models. Attacking with forward-firing .50-cal. machine guns and bombs, the A-20G lived up to its name by creating havoc and destruction on low-level strafing attacks, especially against Japanese shipping and airfields across the Southwest Pacific.
In 1961 the Bankers Life and Casualty Co. of Chicago, Ill., donated this A-20G to the museum. It is painted to represent "Little Joe" of the 5th Air Force, 312th Bomb Group, 389th Bomb Squadron, with 150 missions.
Originally trained to fly P-40s, the men of the 312th transitioned to the A-20G in the field. Calling themselves the "Roarin' 20s," the men of the 312th fought their way across the Southwest Pacific from New Guinea to the Philippines.

The museum has come a LONG way since I was little! Back then, it was only one building and the flight line outside. The dioramas are impressive and add depth to the exhibits.

Why this aircraft has been shelved well into the darkest sections of history is beyond me. Along with aircraft like the B-26 and the A/B 26 all medium bombers used to great success. I only wish we had more examples flying or not of these fantastic warbirds.

Medium bombers such as the A-20 (which is more of attacker) don't get as much attention as the bigger bombers naturally, they did the smaller jobs that wasn't really as exciting to the public as massive large bomber fleets. (Which makes no sense as these bombers were essentially WW2 era A-10s)
I feel people should invest in perhaps constructing replicas for flight.

Nice video! My dad was in the 5Th A.F., 3Rd. Attack Group and they had A-20's & B-25's. Switching to all A-20's. He did go up as a gunner in the A-20 early for only about 6 missions. He was supposed to be in the photo section and I grew up looking at the low level action photos he was able to collect. I remember him telling me of how he would look up and see the top of the trees in those low level attacks they made. I met an A-20 pilot and he compared it as a sports car to flying the B-25 Mitchel which he also flew.
