  • Painting in the style of Claude Monet, using one of his 'Waterlilies' series as inspiration.
For this demonstration I'm using Golden Heavy Body acrylic paint on a 40cm x 30cm canvas panel. The original was around 92cm x 73cm.

Loved it. I love acrylics because it is so easy to layer them. Monet painted in many, many sessions. I wonder if he would have embraced acrylics.

Thanks for the comments Lynne. Difficult to guess his reaction to acrylics. He was quick to embrace new (at the time) cadmium based colours, but so much must have been about the feel of the paint and its long working time it may have meant a complete change to his methods.

I love your painting. Are you using any medium with the acrylics? I’m wondering how you are able to blend so nicely without them drying out. I often struggle with this. Thank you!

Hi - thanks for your comments and glad you enjoyed it. I don't think I used any mediums in this painting, but it wasn't very warm at the time (in south-west France) which helped. There's actually less blending in the painting than you might imagine. I think Monet might have painted in dabs of colour with only limited blending. I often use Golden's "Satin Glazing Liquid" when I need more subtle blends. When it's hot I also use a little of their Retarder to help give me a bit more time. It's a difficult balance as it's easy to end up with a painting that remains sticky for a long time and impossible to work on.
