    Now be fair with Hasoda's work, he seems to take a different approach to family with each film. Summer Wars was about the community of having a family, and how everyone supports one another and comes together through crisis. Wolf Children was about the relationship a mother has with their children and the struggle one can go through in raising them. This one goes after the relationship a father would have with his son, and while it could be called a bit 'masculine' that does tend to be the relationship most sons have with their fathers. So yes, it might seem a teeny bit gender bias, however this is simply something most guys have with their fathers and that girls (unfortunately) didn't get a lot of (However, with current gender guidelines breaking down, in a few generations that might change). So in my opinion, Boy and The Beast hit a lot closer to home for me as well as several friends of mine than some of Hasoda's other works. It's a great movie and I'm happy you got to see and review it. Great job Cellspex.

    I believe that this movie has more meaning to people or should I say kids with divorced parents or those how are not close to their fathers. For me I have divorced parents and can very much relate to the characters of Rin and Kumatetsu very much, as well to have maybe a better understanding of message of it. Over all I loved the film.

    I agree. The beginning half was very interesting and seemed to be building to something really cool!--and then it shifted gears dramatically going back into the human world with uneventful non-schenanigans until the film suddenly decided it was fascinated with whale metaphors. We really didn't NEED such an obvious and overly explained metaphor to understand what was going on, either. It was pretty clear before with just the shadow people. XD
    It was a lovely film, but not as amazing as his other ones. It could have used more focus... perhaps remove the love interest entirely, even, I didn't feel like she contributed to the daddy issues plot (which is ultimately what the focus of the movie was about).

    I really think this story would have benefited if told in 12 episodes. I felt like the character development was really lacking because of the lack of time.

    Great to see another review. I understand the criticism about it being a "guy" movie, but i feel like anyone could relate to the film if you just didn't focus on the gender, but maybe that's just me.
    Great review as always though.
    And screw Norm of the North! that film should have stayed a straight to dvd offering! I agree that this is maddening that much better animated films get the cold shoulder in terms of release where as Norm of the North gets to be released in multiple theaters....screw that noise

    As a big fan of Mamoru Hosoda's work, his work on the Digimon movies (because Digimon the Movie is basically 3 seperate and unrelated movies glued together and edited heavily to make them relate to each other) is also pretty damned spectacular. Summer Wars was basically Digimon Our War Game (second Digimon movie or segment in the dub) but expanded upon a bit given more character development.
    I have yet to watch this movie but I want to say that if anything about Hosoda's work, it's that he knows how to take the story-telling and animation and finds ways to make them work in this beautifully connected manner.

    This is the only review of this film I actually agree with (spoilers below).
    The first half of this film was AMAZING! I was having such a blast with it. But the second part just...really annoyed me. It's clear that they had a father-son relationship, but from what I saw it became an exclusive master/apprentice bond. I found rarely any heartfelt moments, and the ones I did see were all in the first part. And then they had to add a love-interest/DOYOURCOLLEGEEXAMSGUYS to it all. The bond between Kumatetsu and Kyuuta was not done to it's full potential at all. I was expecting an emotional relationship and what I got in the end was we-fight-a-shit-ton-but-we-like-each-other.

      DZeros Ikr? And Kyuuta was so quick too go back to Earth. It's clear he doesn't see Kumatetsu as a father, which leads me to asking why it was advertised as such?

      Okay so I agree with the whole Ren being quick to leave the beast world and the whole love interest thing but the college exam thing I don't see much of a problem with cause in Japan school has a higher value to it than in America. So the exam thing I believe is just an example of culture differences

    Saw it at the "art" theater in northern NJ with several friends. Loved it. We had an interesting discussion after about the subtle hints dropped earlier in the movie about the seemingly abrupt character transformation of the other boy who becomes Kyuta/Ren's nemesis later in the film.

  • @closertothefutureme8469
    @closertothefutureme8469 8 лет назад +13

    I call the movie "Messy" much like how the main character is called "messy."
    The 2nd part of this movie was just so abrupt and the pacing was all over the place so I really couldn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to. The CGI/cell shade that they used for the background characters too looked...odd. And the framing device was also odd.
    Perfect vs. brute = Good selection for possible lord.

    I wish as we'll to see more of kumatetsu (sorry if I spelled this wrong) they should make a 2nd movie about kumatetsu past. that this movie did not explained like why dose the emperor like him? what happened to his family? what is his relationship between the monk and the monkey? so many unanswered questions. plus we get to see more of him then ren. then maybe a 3rd movie? sorry I gust really love this idea of family with these characters thats all♡♡♡♡♥♡♡♡♡

  • @wolfcara16

    I really liked this movie, but there were two things that bothered me nonetheless. When the whale entered the ring, pretty much all of the coming shots focused on it jumping around... like yeah, a whale. WE GOT IT. The second thing was a line at the end of the movie. "He never held a sword again" I have heard it so many times in other stories, I never liked it and especially here it felt like such a waste to abandon the secret world completely and reducing what has been, to an imaginary-friendish relationship. I'd prefer a shot or two given to the mental recovery of Kyuta's opponent.

    I think this movie is amazing but it has some problems that keep it from being perfect to me.The first act when Ren was in town and got into the animal realm and got adopted by the bear was pitch perfect.from the culture to the action scenes to the relationship between *The boy and the beast* ,I was just astonished by the film.the second act where Ren grew up though.....yeah it can suck it,don't get me wrong I was hyped when the kid grew up into a teenager to see how it plays out.BUT NO,he had to return to the human realm to mess it up.I was curious to how it played out as well but as it goes on,it just became into a typical anime drama,bland love interest and all.however when the kid gave up the human life and came back to the bear for his fight,it grabed me back into it's glory,even when Ren came back to the human realm it was still engaging by continuing the story instead of being a typical anime drama.the first and third act of the movie was a beautiful spectacle,but the second act is just dog barf.

    Okay I got to say I'm so glade you did a review on this because that got me to buy it and I loved it but I have to say there was one little thing in this film that I couldn't figer out why it was there and that the little white fluff ball that sits on Kyuta for the whole movie. and then while watching the film with my friend I came up with this thought. that fluff ball is ment to be his mother's spirit. that was the only reason I can think of as to why it was there. What do you think?

    I agree that this is not hosoda's best movie, however see this many times over and over, i realize expression about relationships and emotional part is very understated on purpose. and it's for describe better about father and son, teacher and student relations in the movie in contrast with wolfchildren. also ren is teached by possible god beings for there enlightenment. every people in jutengai? is possible god being and i guess some of there final goal is ascension. so there practice is quite harsh and that concept is affect expression on movie.
    oh... and i cry a lot every time i watch this again almost when i watched wolfchildren and insideout. its more clear that where is emotional parts and why its so moved my heart.

  • @PhilipPetrunak

    It seems to be a pattern with his movies where the first half is better than the second half. Especially when a time skip is involved. In Save The Cat this part is generally referred to as the B-Story and fun and games which makes up about the second and 3rd fifths of the film. This is where he is strongest, and the discrepancy between that part and the remainder of the film makes the endings never feel balanced out.
    That said, while the film itself is excellent the whale motif was the weakest part of the whole film. The only reason it happens is because the bad guy picks up a book the good guys threw at him. I hate to say it, but it was down right stupid. This could have been much better set up, Then again every aspect of the villain was weakest in this film and would have greatly benefited from a bit more exploration of his character.

    • @heymistercarter.
      @heymistercarter. 7 лет назад +2

      I agree. The villain in this has probably the worst villain setup I've seen in a long time. He's in the movie for like 2 minutes, has, what, 3 lines of dialogue, disappears for like an hour, then 30-40 minutes from the end, he shows back up again and is suddenly the villain? I'm sorry, it doesn't work like that.

    The digimon movie is a hastily glued together amalgamate of various digimon animations done by him. EAch one with a different story, and let's face it the digimon movie poorly links em together.
    would watch the seperate ones though. they are kinda awesome, if the lastish one is somewhat less so.
    The first one is about their first encounter with digimon in the adventure series, as a koromon ends up in the human world for unknown reasons. The koromon eventually evolves into an agumon...... and it actually a lot more animalistic and bestial than the one we get to know. While it clearly has a close bond to the kids, its behavoir is primitive and often violent. and it only gets more so when it becomes a greymon.
    The second one is basically a copy of summer wars with digimon...... Albeit considering digimon already has the whole sentient digital entity going on, it might be a bit easier to accept.
    Basically the same beats.
    The third one has absolutely nothing to do with the second one. Bout an american trainer who strangely has two digimon, and one of his digimon goes batshit insane and actually starts abducting digi destined trying to find his old friend, but through a batshit lens.

  • @Zerendipia

    I hated the ending...
    I feel as if the director said: what? a kid is not studding no no we have to fix that.
    SPOILERS:
    .
    .
    .
    .
    What really? the reason he leaves the world is because he wants to study and be with the father he never knew?
    Really you had to do that to kuma just so that he did not have a conflict and could easily go back to his world?
    HOLY CRAP he could at least have become a grand master in the real freaking world, I feel like leaving the sword is an insult to this father.
    He could have tried to keep a balance and actually be happy with both his parents but noooooo, he has to be forced to be with his biological father and go to school because that is what he is supposed to do right?......
    I still liked it..... 7/10

    The Boy and the Beast is personally one of my favourite anime movies. When it came to the whole "I can't relate because I don't like yelling obnoxiously," that's not the only thing to relate to with this movie--not that a movie has to be relatable to be a really good movie. Kiki's Delivery Service was super relatable, yet I thought it was a bit of a "meh." movie.
    Not only does it have the whole issue with having a good relationship with your parents, but that feeling on not belonging anywhere and dealing with all the slightly darker psychological stuff, which I feel like is an important topic to the movie that is lacking discussion in this review. Plus, I just find it fascinating because I have reason to believe that the spirit world is all in Ren's mind, and I spend most of my time during the movie deciphering what everything is symbolizing and trying to say about Ren's path to adulthood. Of course, this is just a theory, but that's what makes it all the more fascinating ^^ Solid 9/10

    So I watched boy and the beast not to long ago and really loved it, I'm also a female and I actually could relate to this movie a lot cause growing up I was more closer with my dad. My mom and I were always fighting in a bad way but me and my dad got along, we did have the occasional fight but we'd both apologize to each other. I ended up realising after I turned 15 that I did imitate my dad to a certain extent. I have a short temper, I'm a romantic, I show my emotions more that others, I'm a goof ball, I learned how to make a lot of friends and I believe that being an adult but enjoy having childish or child like interest is perfectly okay. I learned all of that from my dad. So I could relate to this moving despite it being about a boy and his relationship with his father figure

    I ask because you specialize in animated movies and "Sausage Party" claims to be the first mainstream American R-rated CGI movie with one hell of a cast and it claims to be a parody of Pixar/Disney movies (they even got Alan Menken on board to make the music).

I really liked it and I would always watch it, mostly because it was one of the best movies in the selection and the flight was 16 hours long. I think I’m the only one who seems to like both halves of the movie. Sure, the second half isn’t perfect, but I just like seeing how Ren would act in the real world after being in “Japanese Zootopia” for so long.

    Honestly, the only part of this film I truly felt was pointless and just kind of eh was the climatic battle in the "real world" with the Kyuta and whatever the other human was called.
    Sure it was beautifully animated, but in that it was also very messy, loud almost, what with the weird light whale and all that jazz, and whats with Kyuta's lady friend suddenly being in the spirit world?
    If the film had ended with Kumatetsu's victory in the colosseum and whatever Kyuta chose to do afterwards I honestly would rate the film a solid 8.5/10 but the ending drags it down so much for me, it was honestly pointless in my eyes.
    Still, with that said, it was a fantastic film.

    • @unicornhorn6662

      +UnicornHorn The ending was pointless, but the rest of the film was great, thus an 8.5
      how hard is that to understand?

    • @unicornhorn6662
      @unicornhorn6662 8 лет назад

      NRool It's hard because your explanation was shit. You said "If the film had ended with Kumatetsu's victory in the colosseum and whatever Kyuta chose to do afterwards I honestly would rate the film a solid 8.5/10 but the ending drags it down so much for me, it was honestly pointless in my eyes." What this means, is that if the ending wasn't there, you would give it an 8.5/10, but because the ending is there, it sinks down from 8.5 to "the point where it becomes pointless". However, with that being said, the film was fantastic! Pointless and way below 8.5, but still fantastic!
      Like what the actual fucking hell dude

    • @_nRool
      @_nRool 8 лет назад +1

      +UnicornHorn dude, you're looking at a simple grammatical mistake and twisting it into some huge thing.
      The film without the ending is an 8.5, the ENDING was pointless, not it made the film pointless, I don't even think that's a logical conclusion to make given what I'd said beforehand.
      Like I'm trying to be rude but surely you can see past a simple grammar error and come to a logical conclusion as to what I meant right?

    The digimon movie actually has really good animation (by 2000 anime standards).
    If you want to give it a chance try to watch the Japanese counterpart the digimon movie is a fusion of other 3 movies so it comes just as a big mess.

    "The movie portraits men as people screaming at each other in masculine no chill attitude"
    Do you even watched the movie? The "lesson" is the exactly opposite of it!
    Stop trying to pander to "LE GENDER STEREOTYPE xDd" crowd and pay some attention. Which is ironic, since you blamed the movie for being too obvious and "spelling it out for you"
    And yet the point of the Ren's adventure flew over your head.

    • @ThePonderer
      @ThePonderer 8 лет назад +13

      I know this is four months late but I feel like you missed the point. Kumatetsu becoming a sword had less to do with Ren's character arc than it does his own. Ren may not spend any more time in the beast world, but it's not like he's picking one father over the other because he literally has Kumatestu inside him at all times.

    • @Zerendipia
      @Zerendipia 8 лет назад +2

      If he would have kept doing sword training that would have been fine, but it's an insult to his father to just drop it completely like he never cared.

      TBH I felt the same when it said he left the world I was like "ok" but then it said he never held a sword again then I thought "God damn it it's one of those anime"

    • @sleepy-onigiri5760
      @sleepy-onigiri5760 8 месяцев назад +1

      I think the point was more that Ren was finding his own place in the world and deciding for himself what he wants to do. The fact that Komatetsu became the sword in his heart, showed that thanks to the bond he has with him, he could heal from his trauma and feelings of not belonging. Komatetsu will be there for Ren, no matter what. He was happy when Ren lived his life in the end. I think it was supposed to show the problem parents and children often have with each other, when the children go their own way and the parents might not agree with it, but will still be there when things get tough. Even after all the fighting, there is and always will be love and support.
      I mean the movie dealt a lot with the pressure of belonging, fitting in and dealing with the expectations society and family have for you.
      The parallels Josen and his adoptive son have shows that a lot too.
      At least that's how I interpret it.
