This is literally the most beautiful place on Earth. I am NOT the kind of person who is normally impressed or even really notices nature, but I saw a still image of Santa Maddalena about a month ago, and I gasped aloud. I've become obsessed with it ever since. Not only is it the most striking geography I've ever seen in my 45 years of life, it's a major miracle that it isn't completely overrun with tourists. A truly unbelievable spectacle.
@John Little, It's funny that you mentioned seeing a Santa Maddalena image. What motivated me to travel here was also an image that I saw online years ago, which sparked my desire to visit this wonderful place and witness its beauty with my own eyes. And I finally did it! The reason why we don't see overcrowding with international tourists in this valley is that not many people can come here unless they have a car. Most tourists visit the Dolomites by tourist bus, and this valley is quite a distance away from the major attraction areas of the Dolomites. Moreover, this place does not offer bus parking.
When you arrive at the foothill parking areas, be prepared for a bit of uphill walking. Simply follow the narrow path leading to the Church and beyond. The walk from the parking lot to the church is approximately 20 minutes uphill. Keep in mind that this area is off-limits to cars, except for local farm vehicles. For a spectacular Birds Eye View, take the upper mountain road by driving (the only main road). However, there's only one small public lookout point along the road; the rest of the roadside has no parking. To find a great spot for photography, you'll need to walk along the road. A zoom lens is recommended for capturing fantastic photos. The upper mountain road offers superb views down to the valley, too bad it had no place to park.
