P&O Iona Norwegian Fjords cruise - DIY excursion to PULPIT ROCK in STAVANGER - Episode 3

- Join us in our third episode with P&O Iona in Stavanger.
This is our first port of call onboard the beautiful P&O Iona as we set sail for a 7 night Norwegian Fjords. On the Norway Cruise we will call at Stavanger, Olden, Hellesylt for Geirangerfjord and Haugesund.
In this episode, we go on a DIY excursion to Pulpit Rock which we purchased through rodne.no. We've been to Stavanger four times and have previously done the Stavanger Hop on Hop Off bus or just wondered around, so this time we decided to do something a little different - we really wish we did this sooner, it was an excellent DIY excursion.
We purchased our Rodne Fjords Cruise tickets from the Tourist information centre just next to the ship, it is really easy to find and the boat departs a few 100 yards away fom downtown Stavanger to Lysefjord and Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock). We missed the 10am one, so booked the midday one. The 3-3,5 hours Lysefjord cruise is a great experience. In Fantahålå (Vagabond’s Cave) you see where the “vagrants” hid from the sheriff in the old days. Not long after, we arrive at Preikestolen, where Tom Cruise climbed the sheer mountain face in the movie Mission Impossible 6. Then we continue to the towering Hengjanefossen waterfall, where the crew brings the bow so close to the falls that you risk getting your face doused with delightful spray!
Along the way, we stop to feed their goats at summer pasture in Lysefjord. They love the visits! The crew tosses carrots and other treats to them.
The tour was 725 NOK per person and well worth it!
We did get absolutely drenched on our day out, but we didn't mind! Back onboard Iona we enjoy the sail away from Stavanger and enjoy our evening dinner in the Main Dining Room.
We hope you enjoy this episode, stay tuned as in the next one we arrive at Olden, the second port on our P&O Iona Norwegian Fjords cruise.
We paid £997pp for our P&O Norwegian Fjords cruise and booked with / martinsholidayvillage - This was a Select fare smd included Parking and £210 onboard credit. We also took out the P&O Ultimate Drinks Package for this cruise which costs £39.95pp, this was upgraded to the Deluxe package as P&O changed their packages, more info on the P&O Drinks packages can be found here:cruisemonkeys....

🐒🍌🚢 About Us - Who are the Cruise Monkeys?
We are bananas about cruising! We started cruising in 2014 by doing a mini cruise on P&O Aurora. Making videos of our cruises and sharing our experiences has become our hobby - the complete video is filmed and edited on an iPhone. The videos are our opinions and experiences while on board - really they are us having fun and brining you along with us!
We may not be the youngest cruisers but we are trying to break the stereotype that cruising is for retired people. On a cruise you will normally find us wondering around the ship taking in the atmosphere (and working our way through the cocktails).
We have sailed on P&O Cruises, Cunard Line, Princess Cruises, MSC Cruises, Royal Caribbean and Avalon Waterways. We'd love to try Ambassador Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), Fred Olsen, Holland America (HAL), Celebrity, Disney Cruises, Carnival Cruises, Costa, Aida, Marella and Celestyal.

Hi cruise monkeys loving your vlog
Signed up.
Thank you😊
Just catching up with your videos on RUclips. It seems unfair that you get such rainy weather when you go to Norway (but it is a testament to how many times you've been back that you still love it!). I went this summer and I only had one slightly rainy morning (on a sea day) during my 16 day trip (unfortunately, I couldn't spend that morning relaxing in my room because Island Princess was so awful). Every day was beautiful (nearly every day sunny, a couple of days did have some clouds), even Nordkapp was quite warm and fog free. Of course, I brought lots of rain gear and cold weather clothes and never put them on. 🙂 Still great video and I'll need to try the boat trip whenever I go back!
Glad you enjoyed the video! Highly recommended the trip. We’ve been quite lucky in our visits to Norway so it wasn’t so bad having the rain this time! It’s such a beautiful cruise isn’t it, rain or shine it’s stunning! Sorry to hear your room on Island Princess was awful 😞
I was on the Iona 2 yrs ago today and the food looks a lot nicer than when we were last on. We're on her again in 2 weeks,I'm quite excited now after seeing this guys! 👌🏻😘
Have a fabulous cruise! 🥳 Cruise lines are now a bit better run in and staffed so things have improved on most lines 🤞
Norway is so beautiful. We've been twice to Stavanger. Once on the Iona. Both times we've had lovely weather there too. Shame the weather wasn't better for your visit. Really enjoying your vlogs as always. X
Thank you so much, glad you enjoy them! Never been lucky with weather there but even in the rain, the moody atmosphere of the fjords is amazing
What, no slurring of words? The drinks must not have been strong that day 😄
Just kidding, another great video, guys!
See, we can be good 😇 Glad you enjoyed it!
Reminiscent of our Lyslefjord excursion last year to see Pulpit Rock and, agreed, it was truly amazing, despite the rain and well, well worth it.
💯- the moodiness of the rain and clouds make it a magical experience
“I went for the vegetarian curry and put chicken on it” wetting ourselves! 😂😂😂😂😂
Classic Luke 🤣
Great vlog guys, we love Norway what ever the weather as you say it's spectacular.
Thank you! Absolutely, even in the rain, it is beautiful ❤
2019,a magical day for my 60th birthday,we were blessed with sunny,cold weather.A wonderful experience,would recommend 😊
The scenery is just incredible no matter what the weather is like it’s always so picturesque! We’re glad you had great weather though, it makes it more comfortable you’re less distracted by avoiding the wind or rain lol
Loved watching this. My daughter and I did the Pulpit Rock in July as a Viking optional excursion. Our weather was worse than yours, raining so hard that we couldn't go on the upper deck at all. Scenery was lovely, but overall a waste of time and money. Can hardly wait to see your next adventures!!
Glad you enjoyed the Vlog! Awwww nooo, we thought we had it bad on our, but at least we did manage to get up on deck and have done dry spells. 🥰
Really enjoyed your trip on the boat even in the rain some lovely views thank you.❤❤
Thank you! The views were magical - all moody.. stunning and worth getting soaked for 😍
Can't wait to go back. Missed stavanger with the weather the week before
Awww yeah, there’s been a few cancellations recently! You know what you need to do… press that book button 🤣
Towels as blankets is a great theme for this cruise ❤
Hahahahaha yeah 🤣🤣
Hello my boys, I love your excursion to see lovely waterfall... Sorry to see you both really wet by heavy rain... Glad you both have a great day....
Glad you enjoyed it! Oh no worries, we are waterproof 🤣 Hope you are keeping well matey! 👍
I can't believe all the people swimming in the pool in that rain 😂
Hahaha well they are already wet 🤣
Wow those wine pours at dinner looked like my kinda wine pours 😎
Yups, large ones on the package so 250ml
😋
I just got home from the same cruise, P&O Iona Norwegian Fjords, 26th August 23. It's a great cruise and ship would highly recommend.
That’s great to hear 👍😀
Awesome day out in stavger. That boat trip was awesome. Beautiful scenery and the weather added to the beauty.
Really enjoyed this vlog 😊
Glad you enjoyed! Yeah the trip was fabulous 😀
Loving your vlogs, due to go on Arvia Sunday week. First time cruisers, so excited. Watching your videos have given us great insight as to what to expect. Thank you for that. Enjoy the rest of your trip. It’s raining in Cornwall too, so it’s not just you, lol.
Glad you like them! Have a fab time on Arvia! The swim up bar at sunset is the best - take time to enjoy that 😍
Some great footage boys! - Such fun - I always enjoy watching your updates! *hugs*
Awwww thank you very much 🥰
The weather made it very dramatic but oh my that rain lashed it down. We are thinking of possibly Iona or Britannia for the fjords for 2025 as have Sky Princess for next year for Scandinavia. Great video guys, thank you
Took day to dry out 🤣 Britannia and Sky are the same class of ship so it would give you a good comparison 👍 Highly recommend the fjords!
Excellent job keeping the lens clear with all that rain, typical that it dried up when you were back on the ship though.
Some of the shots were completely ruined by it - but hopefully we managed to get across the beauty of the cruise. Yeah, Sod’s Law 🤣
STUNNING ❤
It sure is, even in the rain!
Amazing guys ❤
Thank you ☺️
Hello chaps! We did the same cruise but we were on the 9:30 sailing. We booked our tickets before at home. Yes, it bloody pisched down most of the time for us, too. It was so wet even the goats stayed away. Perhaps they got hungry when you got there. 😆The scenery was nevertheless fabulous. It was so atmospheric and very Peer Gynt. The weather did clear up for a bit when we got to the Pulpit Rock, so we got some nice photos. You were less lucky. This was definitely one of the highlights of our cruise.
Coincidentally, we also had dinner that evening in Opal. I opted for the Caesar Salad, the Pan-fried Chicken Breast (should have gone for the steak or the brisket, but wanting to eat less beef) and the cheese plate. Alas, it was the least enjoyable meal I had on the ship. In fact probably the worst meal in the MDR on any of the 6 cruises I have taken so far. 😫 I thought the cheese plate, even thought it was better presented than yours, was pathetic! We didn't eat in any of the other main restaurants for the rest of the week.
Tom Ball was fantastic!! So enjoyed both his shows.
Looking forward to Olden!
Glad you enjoyed it and that you did get to see pulpit rock too!
P&O cheese plates used to be so good, but wedges of cheese and as many crackers as you wanted - bring back those days!
Agree, Tom was fab! Both shows great! Enjoy Olden once it’s out, it’s a good one!
Great vids love Iona bringing back memories from last year 🎉🎉 just not enough alcohol drank in that vid 😂😂😂😂
Glad you enjoyed! Hahaha we can be 😇 sometimes
Even in that weather it looked worth the money.
100% was worth it, great trip
Oeeeeh need to get this one on my list as must do cruise stop
Certainly do, the little streets with the fisherman houses are beautiful too!
Buy the right waterproof gear, and you will be fine. Another really enjoyable video, though not that keen on Stavanger, hopefully like yourselves, it will grow on us, thanks very much, love Olden as a place though 😊
Yeah, we left our proper waterproofs at home 😂 still fab! It’s definitely grown on us but Olden still a firm favourite ❤️
Hi Gavin and Luke
Great boat trip from Stavanger, shame about weather ,but still dramatic.
Olden is our favorite port in Fyords, we did glacier from a boat (didn't walk on it ) looking forward to watching you both there😊
Hoping for dry days in Broad haven Pembrokeshire ,next week 😂
Thank you! Olden is our favourite too! Please bring the weather with you! Broad Haven is lovely 🥰
@@CruiseMonkeys will try to bring 🌞 want a paddle with Grandson!!!
I was on Iona to the Norwegian Floyd's when it was the Queen's funeral we were just mowing into stavanger the captain set the horn off and made me jump😂😂 but I love the place I would go back
The horn can make you jump if your not expecting it 🤣 Love town to revisit!
We have just got back from doing that same cruise. We had lovely weather apart from Hellestylt so we were lucky. I notice since your cruise the steaks have gone to 5oz now instead of 6oz ... I tend to have the steak a lot 😂 .. anyway, we had a great time too 😊 x
Ah fab! Great to hear you had good weather 😀
Ohhhh wonder if that’s a cut back?! Steak is good 🤤
We go on the 2nd September…..can’t wait!
Have a fab time 😋
Have a brilliant time! 🥰
It looks amazing. Thank you x
We didn't do the opal. Did the pearl and coral. Did the coral first over looking back of the boat. Then I wanted to be even closer to the window so went into the pearl. I enjoyed the MDH. But I'm a defo a buffet eat to your hearts content kind of girl. I also tried some very local meats and cheese on my way to langhoss waterfall. Including brown goats cheese....much to my other half and kids horror ...who proceeded to order pizza😂. Also when in the MDH my fella looked at the most expensive wine as we had the delux package. ..and had to stop after two cos he was Steaming . Don't know how you two do it haha xx
Omg we love this! Would love to bump in to you on the cruise! Was that the velvet devil or similar, that’s what we were on - 1/3 a bottle in each glass 🤣 Love it! 🥰
@CruiseMonkeys hahaha yep that's the one. I don't drink wine it's like drinking vinegar, but then again, I've only tried about 3, lol. Same. I always think when I watch you that I'd probably get on very well with you both I reckon it'd be a proper laugh. Xx
Were booked in this trip 9th September 24
Ohh have a wonderful time!
Great vlog, where did you get the palm tree shirt from?? We love Stavanger as well, such a cute city
Thank you! It’s a couple of years old now, it’s one of my cruise shirts 🤣 it’s from ASOS - they still do similar ones! It’s grown on us, lovely little streets.
❤
😊
Awe great vlog guys . Got off Iona 3 weeks ago loved stravanger . We just walked around the town lovely . Your boat trip to pulpit rock looked amazing so is it’s mid day excursion or is there a excursion soon as u dock as well , so that could update be done in morn and a walk around stravanger in afternoon 😊
Thank you! Yes, they do a 10am trip too, so for cruises the 10 or 12 trip would give you time to explore the town and lovely streets 😀
There is a 3pm trip that gets back at 6:30 so too late unless you have a late departure from there 😀
I spotted a yellow marque when you got off the tour boat back in Stavanger. Thought that you had a Cruise Monkey sign up tent!
Going to be there in a few weeks on the NCL Prima, so going to look into doing that tour. You guys just booked that in the Tourist Office?
Hahahaha, we’ve not branched out to them yet 🤣
Yes, booked at the tourist centre, they have excursions at 10, 12 and 3, you need to allow about 3.5-4 hours. Either get off right away and get tickets or book ahead as your sailing in on rodne.no/en/
@@CruiseMonkeys Thanks very much Gavin and Luke!
Great info to have.
Btw, you guys are awesome. Love the channel and the content.
It’s a great stop, have you walked to the three swords in Stavanger ever?
No we’ve not, apparently it’s just over a hour away so maybe next time😀
@@CruiseMonkeys yes it’s about 3 miles to get there and it’s a great walk. Well worth it. 😎😍😎
@happyhamlin8219 will definitely give it a go next time 😀
Weather was too bad for us to get in Stavanger 😢 on Iona
Awww no 😞 Such a shame! It’s nice, you have to book again!
Are under 18 allowed on that cruise
Yep, iona and Arvia are P&O newest family based ships. P&O policy is anyone under 18 must be sailing with someone over 18.
Did you book in advance or on the day ?
On the day, you arrive around 8:8/30 so you can pop to the Information Centre and book there, either for the 10am or 12noon excursion, or you can book online at rodne.no/en/fjordcruise/lysefjord-preikestolen/ - Due to port cancellations due to weather over the summer, if booking online we would advise only pre-booking as you come in to port (unless you can get cancellation cover). This also saves a fortune compared to cruise line excursions.
Thanks 👍
The worst cruise we have had. Whilst Norway was amazing. The food, etc, on Iona was very poor, tinned carrots, bland and minimal choices. Or cabin had not been cleaned. Very poor all around 😢
Ohhh such a shame you had a poor experience, the cabin in particular we hope they sorted for you. We can’t say we we noticed anything similar, our only poor experience was the Chefs Table in last weeks episode, but otherwise we found everything good 👍
