Thanks for one of the best described and well performed set of measurements explaining why outdoor antennas really should be almost mandatory when using 4G/5G in fixed (indoor) locations! I often state that operators should carry costs of such installations (see video on Poynting channel for more) because, on average, speeds are roughly improved by 4x to 5x meaning that operators can accommodate 4 to 5 times more subscribers when subscribers are equipped with outdoor antennas. This means 4 to 5 times revenue when capacity becomes a constraint which almost always happen in urban areas. Such massive increase in cellular capacity and hence operator revenues achieved by simply providing subscribers with installation and antennas is almost 10x cheaper for operators compared to improving their base station network. They should hence see the automatic provision of subscribers with external antennas as more effective "capex" spend and savings outweighs these costs by large margin.
Note that in this case the speed increases up and down was 10x and that is with base station 300m from location - very often operators will only supply customers with antennas in areas further removed. Clearly unwise in terms of their own capacity interests but also in terms of customer experience with wireless internet speed. Note quality of connectivity also typically is much more consistent with outdoor antennas compared to indoor. This is because movements indoor causes rapid fluctuations in indoor signals making internet performance unpredictable.

Thanks for this very nice comment, and for the interesting aspect, that indoor (!) antennas can have such positive effects on the providers LTE-5G-Networks. Will try to learn more on these effects from some provider contacts.

In suburban area here in UK. Bought tplink mr600 4g+ router, signal is very flakey inside house on Three UK network using the routers rabbit ear antennas (0-3mbps download, 0-1mbps upload) - I am 0.2 mile away from the Three mast but according to cellmapper the mast is focusing on opposite direction.
I took the plunge and bought the XPOL 01 5g Omni directional.
Speeds are now good enough and stable enough for constant streaming on several devices, getting 30mbps down and 20mbps up on this antennas which is 15 foot high on side of my house facing the mast that is directed away from my antenna.
Happy with it, could go with a different network for faster speeds but I wanted to go with three as they are much cheaper than the other networks.

Thanks for going over the obvious contradictions. I wish the manufacturers would create separate (EDIT: MORE AFFORDABLE ) modem for LTE/5G reception and conversion to Ethernet(POE) that can go down into the house to the WiFi router. Of course it already exists - but at ridiculous prices.

Perhaps one final comment on this excellent video: The XPOL1 which somehow in this case provided the largest performance benefit can also be mounted against the window using "suckers" provided. As long as the window is not metal coated this needs not be on outside but can also be on inside of window and makes mounting simple (so called "self install") since user can simply stick to window. Important to choose a window at least in direction of some nearby towers but easy to identify by using your phone and looking at signal bars close to available windows. Would live to see a test with XPOL1 mounted against balcony window compared to set above? 🙂

Thank you for this interesting comment. Good to hear, that it makes no difference, if the antenna on the window "looks" to the inside or towards the outside... will try this asap in coming videos

I have found that the performance varies wildly, depending on time of day loading of the cell. Furthermore the band that is selected at any given time also has its own characteristics - for instance on band 1 I get a balanced 36/35Mbps down and upload speed but on band 1 and 3 combined (MIMO) I have seen 147Mbps down and 47Mbps upload. On band 41 I have seen 109 Down and about 26 Mbps upload. Furthermore -it also depends on the contract with the provider - I am limited to 100Mbps but what I've seen is that on a connection that shows -53dB RSRP, -6RSRQ my SNR was deliberately throttled to 0dB right after I had a speed test with 97Mbps down and 40Mbps upload speed when the SNR was 21dB. So it all depends.

Super useful and fully comprensible english for not native language !
FWA connection do have a very variable bandwith so I thinks bandwith measurement are not accurate enough to compare different antenna ! I find more useful SINR RSRQ and RSRP parameter

A very thoroughly presented set of tests and product reviews. Is it possible, when achieving 327Mbps DL speeds with the omni-directional Poynting XPOL-1-5G, that the Qualcomm 5G modem was carrier aggregating (CA) signals from more than one tower? I don't know to what extent operators enable CA across n towers but I understand it is possible and I am sure Deutsche Telekom will have one of the most advanced network configurations. A question, how many km (in a straight line) is your home from the 5G tower on the A94 Trade Fair highway?

    • @HaraldKarcher
      @HaraldKarcher  Год назад

Thanks for your very interesting comment:) I might have had CA. The 5G Tower is less than 300 Meters from my home:)

Your outdoor router is under a rooflight? What if we need an outside router that is going to be open to the elements?

Interesting what speed do you have on the balcony with a regular phone, or with different phones if that make any difference. Also how stable is the ping between a phone on the balcony compare to the router in the room, and with the antennas also. I am asking because i am using the phone as thetering with good connection but the ping its unstable, will the router help with the ping, or with better speeds? I think a video called "5G Router VS Phone Tethering: Ultimate Speed & Ping Comparison - What's Faster?" will be interesting for many people.
