No matter how different we all are, background, race, religion, age, gender & how angry we are at each other for whatever the reason......we are all the same. We all have our own personal problems & demons we're fighting. But music can bring us all together. It's a powerful weapon! Some miss use it and others write songs like this. 🤜

It is acapella to the tune of Honesty, but done during the Covid shutdown it parodies the ways people coped with being quarantined - as usual for Home Free, the vocals, harmonies, and whistling are stellar even while they are being totally silly.

Billy was the Piano man before he made it big. This was his story, this was him, and still is in some way. Why this is such a good song is because it is true...all of it, or close to the truth as he could make it about life. (on top of the fantastic sound and his vocals of course)

There is a reason why he has already received a Kennedy Center honor and is known for being one of the best story telling songwriters ever. Listen to New York State of Mind. He wrote that song while riding a bus to his new home in New York, after having just arrived home from Los Angeles. He says when he walked in the door, he asked his wife where the piano was, went o it and write down the song in 20 or 30 minutes.

As I hope someone has already explained, if you hear emotion, and even bitterness in Billy's voice on this song, it's because he lived it. Early in his career he got into a dispute with his manager. Rather than just roll over and give the manager a cut of everything he wrote and/or performed ~Billy IS a New Yorker, after all~ Billy retaliated by going underground across the country in LA, as a lounge pianist named Billy Martin. He remained there for the better part of two years, waiting out the end of his contract. He couldn't do anything that would draw attention to himself, so he had to essentially hide his enormous talent under a bushel basket.
Billy Joel was THE songwriter of his time, the late 70's and 80's. Other acts were more riveting on-stage (*cough* PinkFloyd *cough*) but Billy is a master songsmith, and there wasn't anybody better. "Piano Man" is off his album "The Stranger" and you can't swing a cat on that record without running into a hit single. If you enjoyed his songwriting ability, may I recommend "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant", or "The Stranger" from this same album.

When he was trying to be unrecognizable he was using his middle name and called himself Billy Martin during this stage of his career. This song wasn't a huge hit for him but it became a cult classic after he became more popular. He always ends the show with this song and the entire audience twenty thousand or more all singalong at the end if he doesn't do this song at his concert than the show's not over. Billy Joel is has sold about the third or fourth most albums of any solo artist in the history of music.

This was one of my favorite songs in high school. In the early eighties I was sitting in the crews mess of a submarine when Chief David walked in. Everyone there busted out singing. "Then there's Davie who's still in the Navy and probably will be for life." People who made a career of the Navy were called "lifers". This song is based on real-life events when Billy Joel couldn't pursue his career because of contractual issues so he took a job as a piano man in a bar. #billyjjoel

Billy Joel just a kid from Long Island who followed that dream. Superstar; master in storytelling. Holds the record for most sold out shows at Madison Square Garden. I believe Billy would win if he ever ran for Governor of NY, he is that beloved 🌟❤🔥check out his song “New York State of Mind”🔥#billyjoel

I mowed lawns with Mexican homies. For years. I was 21. My divorce at 29, changed everything. 9/11 happened. I knew I wanted to help people, but nursing took too long. I chose to be a Surgical tech. Worked with geniuses daily. Surrounded by em. The families always thanked me. Went to front of lunch line always! Surgery happes!. I felt vindicated for all my efforts.

Thinking about a dude I worked with in Nome, Alaska, cooking in a little restaurant. Went out for drinks and music, he goes up and plays drums for a tune or two. He showed up there with a band, ran into a Eskimo girl and never left.

What??? How is this possible??? This is one of his BEST!!!!! Love Billie! My last name is Brinkley and he was married to Christie Brinkley who was a model. I joke about it all the time saying I'm her ugly sister. I'm not the model. But I did sleep with her husband. Lol. No, I didn't. But I would have never divorced this man! He is brilliant! I hope you enjoy him as much as I do!

I’ve always loved this song, from the moment I found it, or rather that it found me. It’s an upbeat, happy sounding song on the surface, but the meaning behind it is deeply profound, about the drudge and dispair of common life for so many of us, and how we can often long for just something to raise our spirits, and help us escape if only for a few sweet minutes, and in those moments we’re all the same, regardless of where we came from.
Thanks for your reactions, I really enjoy how you look at different styles of music from many different walks if life

Billy Joel wrote this song at a time in his life when he was struggling with his mental health and his career -- he had signed a record deal as an unknown, the terms of the deal were awful, and he was desperate to get out of it and get with a major label, so he played under a fake name, Bill Martin, at a Los Angeles piano bar, so he could pay his bills. So when he wrote these lyrics, he was writing about himself, about how miserable he felt and how he thought he could be so much more than someone who plays for tips at a piano bar. And in feeling that, he connected to other staff and customers who felt similarly about their own lines. "Yes, they're sharing a drink they call loneliness. But it's better than drinkin' alone."

This is such an awesome song but i started it paying more attention while watching the reactions to it. Interesting points have been brought up. Loved the reaction by a guy who is a hard-core rap fan n he thought he wouldn't like Piano Man, he thought it looked like thrash but during the video he kept pausing it, shocked about how good of a lyrics certain part was n such, by the end he said he had loved it. That's the power of music...
    Great reaction guys
