Josh & Kalie thank you again for delivering such a comprehensive breakdown of the area, you touched on everything! A "5" from both of you?!? Wow! I think I've found my neighborhood! This area does sound ideal. Thanks for all you do, I appreciate you guys!❤
We appreciate you. Mo.
Yup! Big scores from us on this one! 😁 Thanks for the support. 💪
Hello Josh & Kalie
I finally just moved from Florida to Portugal, I actually living in Avenidas Novas Freguesia near Gulbenkian park, I’m loving it. Thank you so much for your video, it help me to know my new home area better. 👍
FIVE and FIVE for MY hood...Woo hoo! And now you really understand why I LOVE living in Lisboa!! So, I totally agree with your assessment based on first hand experience and you know this!! Only turn off for some people is the plane traffic, but it is not all day/night and it doesn't really bother us. Is it too far north...No, it's perfect! This area proves that Lisboa is not all packed, noisy and touristy! Oh, and we are right next door to Campo Grande and Colombo if you are into sports and shopping. And there are a lot of young people because there are a lot of universities in the area between Entrecampos and Campo Grande! Area is superb and a 10 if you ask me!! 😉
Also, there are university bars where you can hang out for a beer(Super Bock!) with the students and take advantage student prices, but you might feel old! Lol we love stopping by once in awhile!!😁
Nice, Tamara! We found that whenever we were in a building with good windows, we didn't hear planes overhead so that's key. We didn't run with the college crowd but we definitely saw them around the shopping centers. - Josh & Kalie
We have lived in Avenidas Novas since January and love it! It’s just a great neighborhood!
It really is! We're glad to know that you're enjoying it. - Josh & Kalie
Your Portuguese has really improved, Love it!
Thank you! 😃 We appreciate the support, Stacey! - Josh & Kalie
I really liked the variety of neighborhoods in lisbon. And, I gotta say, they have some formidable hills
It's got some seriously varied neighborhoods. We hope to show that in our series. - Josh & Kalie
I agree with Josh and Kalie about the neighborhood of Avenidas Novas. I love this area, but it is expensive for me. This channel is on point on everything. We love the francescinha at Taberna Belga in Braga. Thank you very much for connecting us with Raphael Fonseca. He is professional and knowledgeable.
He is helping us with a mortgage loan. Thank you very much for all that you do. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the love, Sue! We appreciate your detail on how we've helped and served you. It means a lot to read this. - Josh & Kalie
I'm absolutely loving all the videos so far, I'm moving to Lisbon next month and your videos are really helping me to understand more about the city, thank you a lot for these awesome videos.
Thank you, Nicolas! We appreciate your enthusiasm for what we're trying to do on the channel and serve our audience. All the best in Lisbon! Keep us posted. - Josh & Kalie
Great video! Just a few considerations: the hospital for cancer treatment is called IPO-Instituto Português de Oncologia. Although it shows on the map Hospital de Sandra, I have no idea why it appears that way. I’ve been living nearby all my life, my mum actually worked there for 36 years and I’ve never heard that being called that way before. 🤷🏼♀️ Also, El Corte Inglês is a more of a department store, not really a mall. I’m so glad you liked Avenidas Novas. It certainly is a great neighborhood to live. 😉👍🏻
Thanks!
We can't really control what Google Earth shows so our Portuguese editor on this one just used what she could. Regarding El Corte Ingles, we debated but since there are some other things attached to the building block, like Decathlon and the cinema, we opted for mall. Thanks for watching. We certainly do like Avenidas Novas. It's one of 2 places that we both highly rated. 😁 Thanks for sharing your experience there. - Josh & Kalie
@@ExpatsEverywhere You’re doing such a great work! Such thorough reviews 😍 As I said, I live nearby in a neighborhood next to Avenidas Novas, which is also a very good one. Let’s see if you review it next! (Try to guess which one it is!) 😁
@@msgr70 Thank you very much. We really appreciate the support and we're glad you've made it to Portugal! We only have 2 episodes left from this series to edit and publish. We didn't divide Avenidas Novas into Azul, Saldanha and such. 😁 - Josh & Kalie
Hello, Josh and Kalie.
I found your You Tube channel a few days ago.
Yes, I live in Avenidas Novas as I told in the class today, because the roads are flat even in Lisbon.
The problem here is noises of airplanes, my apartment is so old that touch and go sound of airplanes make me annoying.
But except it, there are lots of cafes, restaurants, shops, I am fond of this area.
See you on Thursday.
Hi, Mari!
You found us!
Yes, that's one of the only problems that we have with Avenidas Novas as well. The one thing for us in the several times we stayed up there, we've always been in a building that has very good sound insulation, good double pane windows. But walking around outside, you can't avoid the noise of planes flying overhead with a ridiculous frequency.
See you Thursday. 1 more time! - Josh & Kalie
We were literally just there 2 days ago and it was the first time my wife said "this is really nice, I could live here." We loved everything we have seen in Lisbon, Sintra, Lagos, etc so far, but this is the first time BOTH OF US were like "yeah, I could live here." The parks, the statues, the restaurants, the public transportation, etc. This area checked A LOT of boxes for us. Thanks for the rating! I felt the same!
Nice! Thanks for sharing your take as well. We appreciate hearing from you. - Josh & Kalie
I can't watch your videos anymore. Why ? Because they're so good, that's why, and you make me feel so terribly homesick !
Before moving to Greece, and Italy where I am right now, I was living in Avenidas Novas, at Visconde de Valmor Av., near Gulbenkian Foundation & Park. I know the area like the back of my hand. My family comes South Africa but I was born and raised in Lisbon.
(I posted a comment earlier on your Caretos video and...you got yourselves another subscriber :)
Wow, you both rated it a 5. My wife and I have been watching your videos for quite some time now, and planning our move to Portugal. This area sounds like a winning combination. We will definitely explore it! Obrigado! 🙏🏽
We both really liked it for similar and different reasons. 😁 Thanks for watching. - Josh & Kalie
I’ve been looking at prices listed lately on Idealista, and they have sadly gone up. Will you be doing an update on the new costs of living in this area?
Enjoyed this video! You know we're biased about Avenidas Novas and glad you gave it 5 of 5. Sorry we didn't connect when you were here -- that was a challenging time for us. Looking forward to your review of Parque das Naçoes!
Nice! Thanks for watching! You've got an awesome neighborhood. Hopefully we can see you next time. 😊 - Josh & Kalie
Great area and when I visit Lisbon this is where I go. A very vibrant community and feels more Portuguese than touristic. El Corte Ingles has my favorite drinkable yogurt… lemon. The Lisbon Zoo is not too far away and has a nice community there too.
Nice, Ross! Thanks for the comment and sharing your take on Avenidas Novas. - Josh & Kalie
Really enjoyed this video! Cia looked as though she enjoyed this location as well!
Glad you enjoyed it! She had a lot of space to play. - Josh & Kalie
Your assessment nailed it! My wife and I just moved into a T3 in this area of Lisbon just this month and we're loving it here. Everything is so assessable and convenient. We also highly recommend this part of Lisbon.
This is perfect timing! Will be in Lisbon for a few days on my way to Porto! Looking forward to a meetup with Expats Everywhere!
We're glad to for the timing! See you in Porto. 🙏 - Josh & Kalie
Our tour stopped there and we had a fantastic view from there.
this is my favorite area in Lisbon and I always stay in Campo Pequeno area.
Have to say when I saw this video I couldn’t wait to hear your impressions…we were in Lisbon for about 16 days (in late March/April) and spent time in all of the neighborhoods…some more than others…but this felt “like it could be home”…not settled on where exactly, but Saldanha is at the top for now…we will be returning early next year to begin the process of moving, renting, immersing, and being retired in this beautiful and friendly country…we are learning the language but don’t test us yet…your videos are always “go to” for information that can be trusted…thank you so much for what you’re doing…
Thanks for the vote of confidence, Johnny. It sounds like if you can't find something in Lisbon, then you're in the wrong city and you should come to Porto. 😉 - Josh & Kalie
@@ExpatsEverywhere we loved Porto as well…
Really liked this area! Great video!
Thank you! - Josh & Kalie
Thanks for sharing this wonderful video.
Cia seems to be having fun...love her smile. I like area too!
She loves the wide street and parks to be a kids. - Josh & Kalie
That's our hood! For all the reasons you mentioned, but mostly the central location and wide sidewalks. My wife felt like Kalie the first time we came out of the Saldanha metro station on our scouting trip "Oh I like this". We're a couple of blocks from the Atrium and don't hear the planes.
Thanks for sharing your take, Mark! Great to hear from you. - Josh & Kalie
Thanks K&J for another comprehensive and well-balanced overview of this Lisbon neighborhood. 👍🏻 In retrospect, we missed a few hot spots (e.g., Crushed Donuts and Cortes d’Ingles 😁). Both apartments were on the western fringes of this area (perhaps just outside) and were too close to the flight path. During our next trip to PT (whenever that happens 🤷) we’ll drift more towards the east and re-evaluate. 🤔 Appreciate your judgement, work and assistance in helping us better understand where we should consider living if we decide Lisbon in the place for us. Cheers. 🎉
You're welcome! Thank you very much for the feedback on this one. It's interesting that you were able to miss El Corte Ingles. It's very prominent in its area of the neighborhood. But if you were only in one part looking at an apartment or two and didn't get a chance to walk around, that would make sense. Tough thing is, you'll still hear airplanes so you might not like it. - Josh & Kalie
I Love Lisbon thanks for sharing this beautiful place 💕
You're welcome. Thanks for watching. - Josh & Kalie
Woohoo! So glad I made a 2 day reservation at a hotel at this location (Avenidas Novas) for my week long visit to Lisbon and then Porto.
Nice!! So where are the other days going to be spent? 😁 - Josh & Kalie
Thanks again for another great video. This neighborhood sounds ideal. 😀
We truly enjoy your vids and all the expertise and insights you share! We'd love to see you report from Lapa!
Thanks, Michael. We appreciate the shoutout. The Estrela video is coming tomorrow. - Josh & Kalie
Love your videos! Your little girl,is so big now. I have walked there last year in august. Love every place.
Thanks, Vicki. She's def. growing quickly - Josh & Kalie
I was just there in March and my hotel was across the street from the park. I absolutely loved it and felt so comfortable in that neighborhood, as if I should live there lol. Loved the video and hopefully I will be able to find an apartment in that neighborhood.
Thanks for sharing, Tyra. Let us know if you need any help. - Josh & Kalie
El Corte Ingles was about 10 minutes from my airbnb, last summer. Great location but I could read a TAP plane a clear as day because it flew so low. Porto/Gaia is still what I'll call home but it would be nice to visit.
This is the area we live in. Love it.
Fantastic! Thanks for sharing, Maggie! - Josh & Kalie
Hi there. Any advice or recommendations on websites to find accommodation for long stays?
Another outstanding program! Thanks for doing this Lisbon series. Coming over in September to find a place, and this makes me excited to be staying in the area (Saldanha). ☺
Thank you. We're glad that people are finding this series helpful. Mission accomplished. 😊 - Josh & Kalie
I fell in *love* with this neighborhood in March but discovered that it was way out of our price range. After your video I decided that I'd better have another look because I didn't remember any T3's for 250-300e. Idealista now shows 5 apartments in that range, 4 of which don't have lifts. Am I missing a source of properties? (please say yes)
I am currently looking at Lisbon and Porto for future longish visits before we decide on final move. Can you tell me which neighborhoods in Porto are flat? Or if you have a video about it? My husband has mobility issues and this is one of our requirements.
Thanks for this, so helpful! Just returned from Lisbon and we really loved this area as well. We felt like we could really *breathe* in this neighborhood, especially compared to our neighborhood in Braga which, though obviously a much smaller city, feels really claustrophobic.
It's interesting you felt claustrophobic in Braga. The whole city doesn't feel like that. It's a pretty unique place because you can be in the city atmosphere and see mountains. - Josh & Kalie
@@ExpatsEverywhere I think it has to do with the wider streets in Lisbon, and also our particular neighborhood is sooo crowded with car traffic.
You guys rock!!!
Great episode ☺️ looks like a fantastic neighborhood.
Have a question for you guys…
Any information on being able to open a small storefront business?
Thinking about a seamstress/alterations, everything sewing type place. Not sure where, but will need good traffic, exposure.
-what is needed to open a business?
-How much is rent on a small storefront?
-utilities?
Thank you so much!!!
Keep up the great job 👏🏻
Ooh, pleasant surprise to see this video today! Looks like a really nice place to be, and it can't be THAT far from the water I assume. I was thinking of staying on Av. Liberdade when I first went to Lisbon anyway, and that neighborhood is very close by.
Great to surprise you! 😊 Let us know what you think of the neighborhood. It's big so try to walk as much of it as possible if you're scouting it out there. - Josh & Kalie
@@ExpatsEverywhere Looks like the earliest I can get in-country is November. Work has me locked up in the Summer, and still going to Crete in October. Hopefully the weather is still nice!

@@ExpatsEverywhere Well deserved. 😃
@@lucchese20 🙏 Thank you.
I love this area. I spent 3 weeks in this area.
Nice! What did you love about it? - Josh & Kalie
São Sebastião is most definitely my favorite part of the Avenidas Novas area, mostly because of the Gulbenkian museum and El Corte Inglés.
Thank you very much for sharing and watching, Nuno. - Josh & Kalie
Hi. We are visiting Lisbon for 2 months from Portland, Oregon. We’ve been here for about 6 weeks and have not seen pricing in Avenida Novas anywhere near the prices you mention for sale or rent. What were the criteria you were looking at? We also like the area 😀
It's the current range (starting price) you can find on idealista.pt but if you're going through a specific realtor or directly to agents, you'll obviously be seeing the inventory they're carrying. We named the starting prices as well. For rentals, ones that are rented by owner can often times be under market value or less than a professional management company because it's self-managed. The criteria was simply T1 and T3 in the neighborhoods. - Josh & Kalie
@@ExpatsEverywhere If no criteria other than number of rooms, I can see where that would be a starting point. Some of those can be very small. Thanks for the clarification.
@@nancygoldman1410 You're welcome. Thanks again for watching. - Josh & Kalie
Great video. Seems like a perfect neighborhood if you have young kids like I do! Thank you!
Thanks for watching! It's a great options. There's another one in this series...just wait. 😁 - Josh & Kalie
@@ExpatsEverywhere I'll watch for it! 😊
What a coincidence. Missus and I were looking at Azul as our top choice.
Hi my wife and I are moving from Dallas, Texas to the Arreiro neighborhood of Lisbon. So happy to see you gave Avenidas Novas a good rating - do you think Arreiro is a sub-neighborhood of Avenidas Novas (it is right next to Campo Pequeño)? There are barely any videos on Arreiro as a neighborhood, maybe you consider Arreiro as a video too?!?!
*Areeiro *Campo Pequeno
Areeiro is a different " freguesia" (parish): pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Areeiro_(Lisboa)#/media/Ficheiro:Areeiro_(Lisboa)_localiza%C3%A7%C3%A3o.svg
Thanks for the comment, Richard. As Antonio said, Areeiro is a different freguesia. We only had time to review 5 neighborhoods but it would be our next one on the list really. There's probably another 3-5 for us to do but these are a bit labor intensive for us especially with a 2 year old . 😅 - Josh & Kalie
This is definitely the best area of Lisbon. But if you want something more affordable and diverse, Benfica is great.
Great video
Thanks, Therese! - Josh & Kalie
You forgot the Botanical Garden, Zoo that has Zoomarine and Nation Park
Hi, those 3 landmarks are out of the neighborhood albeit the Zoo is close. We touched on the Botanical Garden in the Principe Real episode. - Josh & Kalie
What neighborhood in Porto has a somewhat similar vibe? We're visiting in September.
It would really really help if you could put up the the actual names of areas on screen as the transcript does not translate it well. Like Avenida Snowbush !!
The whole video is about Avenidas Novas. This information is found at the beginning of the video and in the video description section. We also include a Google Earth shot of the neighborhood. - Josh & Kalie
At 8:20 there is one the best universities in the country close by, In Portuguese is "Universidade Nova de Lisboa", now because they teach in English the name is Nova School of law and the Nova humanities and social sciences very close of the El corte inglés...
And there is the biggest high school in Lisbon very close of the el Corte Inglês, Liceu Maria Amalia V. Carvalho.
Thanks for sharing, Artur. - Josh & Kalie
Could you also create a video on whicb portugal city is best for vegetarians and vegans
Hi Priya, we're not the best to ask about vegetarian or vegan because we're not. You know? We have friend that are but they've not traveled enough in Portugal to know the best city. - Josh & Kalie
Is that one of the reasons why Lisbon was ranked #3 in the world for Best quality of life 💚 by the " Monocle"
Magazine 😊
if you're going for 'flat' neighborhood, have a look at Campo de Ourique.
We did ruclips.net/video/f65aqHPDcA8/видео.html
At 6:02, what district???
At 1:31 - which park? I love your info, but am confused in every video because you are thinking about what neighborhood/park you are NOT explicitly saying which one u r referring to. You guys move from one place to another so quickly that it is not cleat if u are speaking about the area u originally started talking about or the wonderful neighborhood/ park/ area you JUST MENTIONED BEFORE description!!
If being close to the water wasnt so important to me, we would be living there I think. Lot of Americans moving over there and nearby.
I think this is our top spot so far.
Thanks for sharing, guys! We appreciate hearing from you. Surely there's a bus or something that can get you to the beach but you've got an awesome place for the next several year, right? - Josh & Kalie
Your audio volume is not loud enough!!!
This will be fixed from here on out. We've identified the problem and both editors (me and Maria) know how to solve it. - Josh & Kalie
What do you prefer about your neighborhood in Porto compared to this neighborhood?
And at Christmas time the park turns into Christmas Wonderland
That's awesome, paul! Do you live up there? - Josh & Kalie
@@ExpatsEverywhere No. Visited last December. Perfect to see all the decorations and with the mild weather like we have here in San Francisco. Thinging of selling our house here and rent in Lisbon in the area on your latest RUclips. Spouse's grandparents born and raised in Maderia so there is a possibility of getting EU passport if we go through all the paperwork. Still apartments in the Novas area are not less than 1400 euros for something nice. Still half of San Frans 1 bedrooms.
Ever want to exchange homes for a short time let me know. We have the original Golden Gate Bridge and same weather. Cheers
@@paulbielen9233 Thanks for sharing. Since, we're in Porto, we're not sure you'll want to swap although we do have several bridges. - Josh & Kalie
I do love your videos, but as someone who is looking to move there, I cannot make out which neighborhood u are talking about frequently. At least put the name up over the video so viewers like me can know. Especially since your audio is very very low in volume. I Still don't know where, what neighborhood you were talking about after listening and reading transcript!!! That is NOT useful to me. Sometimes I will try to find what neighborhood u ate talking about by looking up some of the buildings or parks you mention, but that doesn't give me the neighborhood you ate actually speaking about! I find it exceptionally frustrating because I love the content of your videos- just which I knew what neighborhood u r talking about!!
Hi Jenifer, at the very beginning of each video in this series we put the name of the neighborhood. Each of the 5 videos is solely focused on that neighborhood even though we might mention an adjacent neighborhood. We do not put CC as that's something automatic from RUclips. The name of the neighborhood is also in the description section of each video. - Josh & Kalie
Your Portuguese has improved a lot, but you still can't pronounce Porto correctly ("Portu")
Thank you. Just an FYI, we're not saying Porto, "Portu", just like we're not saying "Lisboa" because we're using the English name, Lisbon. The other words that aren't in English, we try to say in Portuguese because that's how we're introduced to them. - Josh & Kalie
The Portuguese government wants to build a new airport outside Lisbon
What are your thoughts on that? - Josh & Kalie
"Expats" 😅😅😅
I bet you do. That’s where the real rich low profile people live.
Your information is so... ignorant of Lisbon!
Lisbon is NOT expanding north to the Avenidas Novas. It expanded to this area more than a century ago... from the end of the 19th century, so this means from the late 1800s. Most of that growth and expansion was completed by the middle of the 20th century (around 1950).
This area is characterized by beautiful examples of Art Deco architecture and this is its main attraction for folks who know & appreciate art. Refurbished flats still maintain the beautiful elegance of large & light spaces, with simple lines.
The reason why not many young people live in Avenidas Novas is because most flats & houses are quite large and therefore expensive but this is the area their parents, grandparents and older relatives still live. (Nothing to do with fast food, even the young portuguese don't appreciate that much).
Many of these properties have already been refurbished and divided into smaller flats and are available to buy & rent.
This area in NOT the north of Lisbon. This IS Central Lisbon.
The north is Lumiar, Alto de Lisboa, Odivelas, St. Antonio dos Cavaleiros, etc.
If you live or work around here (as I did for many years), you'll take around 10 minutes by bus or tube to get to Baixa. You can also walk there in less than 30 minutes.
Next time try to do a bit more research before posting rubbish.
We have an explanation for your points but it would probably just start an endless argument. - Josh & Kalie
And no graffiti
Not much that we remember. There might have been some artistic murals that we can remember. - Josh & Kalie
