Tip that my sister told me: when making your colors darker, try to avoid adding black & instead add a VERY SMALL amount of the opposite color on the color wheel. (Darker blue-add orange)

Well it can darken the color but it is mainly (for me) used to either tone down the saturation/make it less bright/grey it down while not making the color pastel

R i o t i n g. You were correct and its scary
Just an art tip: adding black to colours isn't the best way to make it "dark", it'll make it dull. For a colour like green, when mixed with yellow and blue, asding yellow will make it brighter and adding blue will make it darker, when I learned this in art it was a game changer! Colours come out vibrant and nicer, even if it doesn't match, don't add black when mixing, even when you have pitch black, mix red, blue and yellow (preferably cyan, magenta and yellow ocre). I suggest you look up a bit about mixing colours with paint. The painting turned out asking but if you want suggestions on why adding black makes it duller, this is the reason.

In response to your statement that "white will never make a shade lighter"; First year of art school, one of my classes had a big focus on paint mixing. Like I mean every day my teacher had the /same/ demo for how to mix paints no matter what project we were working on. Her biggest piece of advice that will stick with me forever, is Dark into Light.
Because the dark colors are a lot stronger per se, you need a much smaller volume of the paint to change your color than you would with lighter colors.Mixing light into dark you'll start to notice you've lost like half your tube of yellow or white before you've even gotten one good color.
Dark into Light not only makes it easier, and generally less time consuming to mix your paints to your liking, it will also save your paint in the long run, and thus save money!
If it helps, I might suggest trying to practice by mixing up paints to get a nice color wheel going, but that's not strictly necessary.
I hope my explanation makes sense and that you can find some use in it for the future! You're a really good artist with a ton of potential, and should definitely keep working to further improve your craft!

Was taught like this as well. Prof told us to buy the most primaries of primaries when color mixing. This meant that we could only use 5 colors of paint. The exact shades were toluidine red, hansa yellow, and pthalo blue. It really teaches you how to get the shade you want by having these restrictions. But buying different shades of a color is fine as well. I'd say it's more of a practicality to already have the paint you want rather than mix it.

A tip for making your shades lighter with mixing your white paint (or any colors) is to always mix the darker color into the lighter! If it seemed that the white never made your paint as light as you wanted it is because when you add the white into the darker color it immediately gets overtaken by it. Adding more into the dark pigment will hardly ever get you where you want it. Don't know if you might have known this but it's just a useful tip for you or any learning painters out there! :)

This is to help you keep paint wet:
Step 1: Get a paper towel
Step 2: wet the paper towel
Step 3: ring out the towel just enough so that it's a little more than moist
Step 4: wrap the towel around the pallet
Step 5: put the pallet with the towel over it into a plastic bag
Step 6: enjoy your fresh paint the next day :>
