I was a student of Jerome. It was an honor and a privilege to have the opportunity to study with a legend! His heart was bigger than he was. I regret now that I didn't get to video all my voice lesson. I now tell my voice students to video their lessons. I do have cassettes of my voice lessons that I will digitalize and share.
Jerry was a monumental force of nature vocally, artistically and spiritually. He was a major influence in my life and continues to inspire me even today as is evidenced by my watching this video. Thank you for sharing this clip!
lichtalberich yes and yes. Met Mr Hines x 2, years ago and several years apart. He was humble, kind and exemplified graciousness. And that voice--- well a godly gift that the good Lord may privilege some day to call forth the living and the dead to judgement(s). Are you on the Lord's side?
expatmarin you are a right about that! Hines was the first AMERICAN BORN singer to perform Boris at the Bolshoi. London preceded him but was BORN in CANADA.
He was the first to wear Chaliapin's costumes for Boris. He was the only one big enough to carry them! And the only one the Russian's would allow to wear them!
It is fair and accurate to note that as Hines grew older, his voice grew even larger and vroader, although his capacity for lighter, more lyrical vocalism declined.
Some guys singing as basses are dropped baritones who can hardly handle the lowest notes that a baritone is supposed to have. Think Raimondi and Morris. Ramey is another dropped baritone singing much bass material, but he can get below the staff with some success.

Jerome Hines was a true basso. Most operatic bassos sound like baritones with extraordinary lower registers, but that wasn't the case with Hines!

Great Opera.
I think George London was the first American to sing Boris at the Bolschoi.
Canadians are Americans, a fact often unknown. He was the first Boris from the US to sing at the Bolshoi.
I think George London was the first American to sing Boris at the Bolshoi in Russian.
I just did a little research and realized that although London‘s parents were naturalized American citizens he was born in Canada.
Hines was the first American-born singer to sing Boris at the Bol'shoi.
