Little Mix - Vocal Analysis

  • It's finally done. I apologise for any mistakes I've made haha the video is an actual mess. But anyway I tried my best and it should be factual. I included the registers, vocal control and any special skills (except for Jesy's beatboxing as I really don't know a lit about that). I did not include their specific vocal ranges but I talked about it shortly in the specific registers. Belts, head voice and falsetto are included. This is no hate towards any of the girls as I'm of the opinion that they are all incredibly talented and vital to the group. Special creds to the video owners and to Ruan Fourie on RUclips.

    This is not a hate video on anyone. I tried my best not to under-/overestimate any of them. They're all incredibly talented and vital to Little Mix and anyone who fails to see that is missing out.
    Edit: After having received tons of comments about me criticising Leigh-Anne and Jesy, I wanna clear something up: I love them both, and I didn't mean for anyone to perceive it any other way- I was trying to be objective. Please also take into consideration that I did NOT only have bad things to say about them. If you have any questions regarding that or recommendations for videos you'd like me to do, go ahead and ask. Spread love!!

      Mjsjeed Thank you for doing this video. I would like to say some things:
      -For Jesy you said that she is underrated but you seems to underestimate her as well😅. She has many inflexions in her voice. She is the most versatile in the group in terms of vocal. She can sometimes sound different depending on the effect she wants to give.I don't know if you saw the "Freak" and "Weird people" Performances but you'll notice that Jesy showcase some power when she belts in those songs. Her tone almost come as aggresive which is really interesting.
      -As for Leigh Anne, I just wanted to say that there is a significant difference between her lows and her high. When she belts, her voice is very light, bright,quite youthfull. But her lows sound surprisingly mature to the point that she has been confused with Perrie in that department.
      Anyway, thank you for this video, I really like those kind of topics.

      I tried my very best not to underestimate her. I did see her Freak note, not sure about the Weird People one. I did mention that she has done some decent belts lately- and probably just forgot to put that note in there. It was indeed impressive and I'm upset I didn't include it. You're completely right, Leigh-Annes tone is a lot darker when she does her low notes. I can already see so many things I forgot to mention, but I guess that's a given with these types of videos. (And again, I really didn't mean to underestimate Jesy, I'm sorry it came off that way- her voice is incredibly interesting to me.) Thank you so much for your comment xx

It was fun learning the technical side of the girls’ voices I think some people just love them so much that they refuse to believe that the girls don’t always sound amazing or that they do have weak moments. But to me, this did not seem biased or anything and it was fun to be shown things in the girls’ voices that I wouldn’t have heard before

      Thank you lovely! Perrie has strained a lot in the past. She's faced a lot of vocal challenges and she just keeps pushing. Add to that the amount of shows they do, it's no wonder her vocal chords are damaged. The more you strain, the more your vocal chords suffer. Other good examples of that are Bebe Rexha, Dinah Jane and Demi Lovato. If you want me to explain that further, go ahead and ask xx

      Sugar Mommy Poor Leigh-Anne! I often see her note changing as a way to cop out of the harder notes she hitsin the studio version but might struggle with live. Now you're giving her a crown for it. 😜 I guess we have different interpretations of why she note changing but I actually see Jade as the Queen of note changing. In a good way. She does this vocal acrobatics with a confidence and sass showing she's not scared to change it up and make it sound just as good if not better. X

That's just plain stupid. Plus, they're great in their own leagues. Janice Lam ah yes well if we take the league of Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez they're talented. But in comparison to all singers in DC, 5H and LM are weak. Also Whitney Houston was a better singer than Cissy Houston and DC in their debut had stronger vocals than LM. Not that they can't be legendary it's that they aren't. DC was an established group since they're 2nd album which went platinum and had a number one. If we speculate into the future there's no reason why Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez and many others can't be good, but it's what's currently happening or has happened that matters.

  • @lincolneyar8269
    @lincolneyar8269 6 лет назад +589

    I agree with most of these. While I am a fan of Little Mix, they definitely have a lot of work to do in improving their vocals.
    While it's true that all of them can sing and hit high notes, this analysis is based on a technical standpoint. They are analyzed not based on whether they CAN hit a note but rather on HOW they hit the note if it's healthy or not, which maybe confusing to fans who aren't well-versed with musical technique and theory. And the general consensus is that Little Mix needs to work on a lot of things vocally. It is very imperative to have a healthy technique because it helps retain the voice. And I'm sure we all like that to be the case for Little Mix.
    Obviously, Perrie has the best technique in the group followed by Jade. Leigh and Jesy (and basically all of them) needs a bit more work which shouldn't be a bad thing. It is their job to keep improving and honing their craft anyway.

    • @lincolneyar8269
      @lincolneyar8269 6 лет назад +36

      Jade is really good. She's the most consistent among all of them but she has to develop other parts of her voice, her middle and upper register to be exact. Perrie is a bit more inconsistent but she has a more developed voice overall. So she is the technique queen of the group. :)) Jade is the consistency queen. :))

    • @mjsjeed184
      @mjsjeed184  6 лет назад +53

      I'd have to agree with Lincoln Eyar. Perrie is developed in almost every department, whereas Jade would still have to work on head voice, for example. Jade very rarely misses her notes, and is, like you said, the most consistent. Although I'd like to add that Jade has the most controlled voice and generally more vocal control than Perrie, same with agility. So there are definitely some things that Jade does better in terms of technique. I might even be able to agree that she has a better technique than Perrie, but for that, she first needs to develop all of her registers.

    i think jade has the most technique and control and versatility but all the girls are beyond amazing and have their own strengths. perrie can sustain notes for days, leigh has a beautiful fairy-like voice that brings lightness to their group and she works extremely hard to improve because she knows ppl think she isn't talented enough but her voice is my favorites after jade. also her stage presence is AMAZING. Jesy has a very unique voice and her beat boxing abilities bring the group's talent to the next level.

    i would argue that perrie’s voice has been deteriorating. 2015/16 for me was when she hit her prime, but during the glory days era she sounds increasingly strained, like with Power, especially live. don’t know, what are your opinions?

    • @mjsjeed184

    Jade seems the most confident with her voice now, sometimes too confident after the GDT and as made us all shook after hitting her some big high notes like in wings, freak, oops, F.U.(head voice), touch, shout out to my ex, black magic, power, nmss and many more. She is getting most confident because her voice has really got all that is required and she has worked on lot of parts of her voice. Her belts are even stronger these days. She has the best technique, breath control, voice control, agility out of all. She is given the most complex vocal runs in the group because she can only handle it the best out of all. She gets the most adlibs even. She is the absolute 100% queen of falsettos no doubt there. She is using the head voice also the most in the group. She has a really impressive head voice that is just heaven, the other girls have said this in an interview even. Moreover her head voice has shown the potential to be best. Jade is gradually becoming the best in the group.

It's not good at all, but if you like the sound of it, then that's okay. And yes, she does, and she's also hit a G5 before (in Weird People).

They are all absolutely insane but personally i think perrie is the best & i hate when people say she’s the queen of high notes, she’s able to do everything not just hugh notes! but as a 4 they go together perfectly and i wouldn’t want any of them solo or anything. i love them all so much. i( don’t leave any hate please, my opinion and others)

Ho do I see that? Ofcourse you see her on stage, she had a amazing voice! Better than me! But I see in her face and eyes that she need more help. It is difficult to understand, so it is harder to explain. Jesy has a lot of power in her voice, more than she shows now. She is so under control with a little help. But you can’t say she sings breathless when she’s performing as she wouldn’t be human if she wasn’t they all sound breathless as they always give 110% unlike some groups. And the remark that she has improved because she is picking up Jades habits when you just finished slating Jade for the same thing. Lacks consistency. Yes you know about key changes and register, breath and overall control. But you need to critique the person by there own potential and not the others.

    Thanks for this video. It was very interesting to me. Though Perrie may be the 'BEST VOCALIST' I would say this is really from a 'technical perspective'. She is very impressive indeed with this but the best vocalist does not necessarily mean the best sounding voice. For instance I find maybe more pleasure in listening to the lighter less heavier tones of Jade/Leigh and indeed Jesy's distinctive smooth like chocolate voice is such a delight. So with Perrie I might raise an eyebrow thinking wow she hit a high or belted a strong note but with the others I might raise an eyebrow to how pretty they sound. Ultimately this is why they are such a 'good mix'. Apart from Jade and Leigh their voices are so different and it all works together so well.

She hits A5s belts at live 2 times and she can do G#5s very good. Sometimes she strained but I can understand because it is a really throaty and hard note to hit. Also she didn't do them on live but she was good at Beep Beep and If I Get My Way. It's happy to see her improving. I hope in LM5 she will show herself better than ever

      @hema6168 6 лет назад +5

      Mjsjeed Now let me explain you one thing which is in real! I am actually taking music classes and learning about all the voices in details. In real, Jade has a really deep voice, and that is the reason why her voice can go powerful and high. And tell me why Ariana is mentioned at all the places where powerful voices are mentioned but naturally she is not at all having a powerful voice. She has a deep voice which can be powerful and high and same is the case with our Jade because Jade and Ari both have the the same voice types, and since ari's is called powerful by everyone so our jade's is also a powerful voice, and most of the mixers say this(that is why her voice is called the versatile voice of the group since it can be sweet, beautiful, pure, full of emotions as well as a strong, powerful and high voice), so I think you should also agree now.

      Okay so I just read up on this and realised that this has a different definition in other countries, which is weird because I always thought that was limited to notes. I'm gonna have to explain this- so where I'm from, voices like Whitney Houston's or Aretha Franklin's are called powerful, whereas Michael Jacksons is a voice that can generate a lot of power, but itself isn't powerful. This is due to the fact that we, where I'm from, have studied it like that: with proper breath control, good posture and healthy vocal techniques, you can acquire a powerful voice. Other people just have that come to them naturally, like Perrie. That's why we call that a powerful voice. I'm sorry for being ignorant, in that case, you might call Jade's voice powerful. I still won't, because I've studied it differently, but I won't disagree with you. As to the video you're referring to- to me, that's not an accurate video at all, but I'm glad it included Jade now that I understand your point of view. I'm so glad to have cleared this up because I was actually confused with my lack of knowledge for a moment. Thank you so much, and I hope you understand me too!

      Mjsjeed of course no problem at all, since I am learning all this new music stuff so I am interested in it and found out Jade and perrie both to be strongest voices out of group and of course leigh is also having it. And one more thing, perrie also has a deep voice like jade only, and perrie generates the power in her voice by lowering her larynx which is not a healthy technique. She also has a powerful as well as a sweet voice somewhere. Tho I adore Jade's and perrie's voice the most.

    This is valid criticism. I do like the way you were trying to be objective and pinpoint both good and bad techniques that they have. You also could have taught some people what to do or what to avoid while singing. I'm impressed! Love your work♥️

    This was a great video to really understand the members voices. Even though some people thought it was hate, I actually loved it. The video was about breaking down each other’s strengths and weaknesses and they shouldn’t be ashamed about them. Individually they all have their strong points and that’s what makes them an awesome and inspiring girl group

    i personally think perrie is the best but many say jade is the best because she has the best technique and that perrie strains to much to be a good singer. What is your opinion and how do you know if a technique is good? (sorry for my english i am german)

    • @mjsjeed184
      @mjsjeed184  6 лет назад +42

      Perrie is, as of now, the best vocalist in Little Mix. Unlike many think, you can't tell that from one performance. Perrie is developed in every part of her voice, and she also has the widest vocal range. Jade has better vocal control than the rest of the girls, and she's also the best in terms of agility. In my opinion, it's very likely that Jade is going to take Perrie's crown in the future. Perrie's vocal peak is to be placed around 2012-2014, whereas Jade and the rest of the girls are still constantly improving. Now, how can you tell if someone's technique is good? Good question. Important things include being able to switch between the registers easily, being able to sing in chest and in head voice with ease (and without breaking into falsetto!) and also not straining and damaging your vocal chords. I hope I could help, and don't be insecure, your English is great love xx

    • @angelina4800
      @angelina4800 6 лет назад

      the technique part was really interesting!! Just a quick question, can the falsetto be damaging for the voice? The way you put it, it seems like it's some sort of replacement for poor headvoice. Or is it just a "part" of the voice, like a way you coud sing something?? I hope I make sense lol

    • @mjsjeed184
      @mjsjeed184  6 лет назад +4

      Angelina CG I apologise for taking so long to answer, your question got lost. Well, if we're being honest, if you don't have good technique, everything can damage your voice. But if you use a healthy technique, then falsetto shouldn't be damaging to your voice. And it can replace head voice, but a developed singer should be able to do both and be capable of transitioning between the two. Falsetto is an important part of your voice, some people even argue it's the same thing as head voice, which is not true, but a common misconception. It's always damaging to overuse one part of your voice over another, so you might even damage your voice with a healthy technique, but it's extremely unlikely. So to sum it up, yes, falsetto is a "part of the voice", and no, it's not "some sort of replacement for poor head voice". Both head voice and falsetto are equally important. I hope that helped xx

    It's so obvious that *Perrie* is the best vocalist in the group; in fact, she has always been!
    *Jade* has improved so much as a vocalist and performer; if anything she just needs some improvement to cement status as a great vocalist.
    *Jesy and Leigh Anne* are cool and I adore then but they definitely need more improvement in their technique than *Perrie and Jade!*
    *Incredible group overall!*

    I think this video is great. I love learning about the technical side of singing. Seeing as to how the girls in Little Mix are among my absolute faves, I really enjoyed seeing an analysis of their different techniques, healthy or unhealthy. I think it'd a great idea if you were to do another video in about a year or so with some more recent clips, because the girls have definitely been improving as of late. But I do know that these take time to put together.

    Here are my thoughts (Ik it's been more than 4 years but I just discovered this video so I will make references to 2017 and 2018 since you uploaded this video around that time):
    1. Jade:
    Jade's voice is more middle-to-high than high since it's only her comfort zone in her falsetto that sits quite high. Jade's upper register is very well-controlled (one of the best in the industry, if I may). She is able to add vibrato to it as high as C#6 (sometimes even D6) in falsetto, which is no ordinary feat. But, like you said, Jade's head voice isn't the best. With that being said, Jade has received little to no vocal training (at least not in the classical area) so the fact that she can even access the register with decent control is actually impressive.
    So I am aware that people are going to start attacking me for this but I will say it because I know that I am not wrong. Jade was always the worst belter in the group. I'm not saying that she's bad at it because she can clearly belt quite well but there are a lot of problems caused by one root problem: her vibrato, which is often throaty and tense (with reference to 2017 and 2018 vocals only). Her vibrato causes her to go sharp a lot of the time on higher notes, which is why she always lipped any belts above C#5 during the Glory Days Tour (except for her G#5 in Freak and a few D5s in Power).
    Now, for runs... many people say that Jade is the best at runs; this isn't false. But saying that her vocal agility is better than Leigh-Anne's is just straight-up wrong. Leigh-Anne's runs are often more precise and usually quicker while Jade's are of average speed and a note or two is sometimes omitted when she executes really quick riffs/runs, although that might just be intentional. Jade is more creative with her runs so she wins for musicality. I would say that they are tied for complexity; Leigh-Anne's are hard because they are really fast while Jade's are hard because they're not the easiest to remember (not the most common types of runs). And the pitch aspect of it definitely goes to Leigh-Anne because Jade does go off-key sometimes when she riffs while that doesn't happen much with Leigh. Jade and Leigh are both on the same level when it comes to vocal agility.
    I would put mixed register and belting in the same category because, even though they're different, they involve similar mechanisms; chest belting uses the M1 vibratory mechanism (use of chest voice) while mixing is either balanced by the M1 and M2 mechanisms or uses just the M2 mechanism as mixing requires a certain amount of head voice to be used to blend with chest voice while belting doesn't require the same. But I do agree with you that her mixed voice is at its best when she's harmonising with the other girls.
    Jade's lower register is exceptional for a soprano! And, on top of that, she has the lightest voice as far as the Little Mix girls are concerned. Technically speaking, Jade always had the best lower register in the group, with consistent support until G#3 (G3 after 2019). She projects really well in her lower range. I don't think I've ever seen her lose volume above F3. Jade's lower register, technically speaking, is her best register after her falsetto.
    2. Leigh-Anne:
    Leigh-Anne's actually a much better belter than most people think. People usually doubt her because she tends to dodge/lipsync notes when she can't/doesn't want to hit them. However, Leigh has shown consistent support up to Bb4/B4 (C5 after 2018). It's only because she lacked confidence that people underestimated her. It's true that sometimes, her belts above D5 can be sort of shouty but she has been improving in that sense.
    It's true that it's hard to find clips of Leigh-Anne singing in her head voice because she sings a lot less in that register than even Jade. Leigh-Anne primarily uses falsetto when she slips into her upper register. I personally feel that Leigh-Anne's upper register is underutilised but that might just be me.
    And I would like to correct you for the harmonies... Leigh almost always takes on the middle harmony/melody. She rarely does the higher harmony (that's Perrie's job).
    Leigh-Anne's breath control is the worst out of the three Little Mix girls (this would apply even if I count Jesy). But we all must admit that it has gotten better over the years. I think that this breath control issue usually arises when she sings in her lower register and not much when she belts/mixes.
    Leigh-Anne's lower register is her weakest register. She has obviously gotten better at it but she still lowers her larynx to reach notes below G3 as of 2017/2018. She has consistent support until A3 (G#3 after 2018). Also, the group's lower registers were always Jade and Jesy. Perrie has the best lower register after Jade but she rarely hits low notes below F#3 (the only times she did were the F3s in Your Love and D3s in The End for studio vocals).
    3. Perrie:
    Perrie is known for being the best vocalist in Little Mix. And I really love how you highlighted the fact that Perrie is a light-lyric soprano. Her powerful voice plus her overly chesty mix makes people think that she isn't but if you listen to her singing in her lower register, the brightness and lack of warmth itself tells you that she is a light-lyric.
    Perrie is a really good belter but I would say that her head voice is definitely her strongest register. As you correctly mentioned, she has consistent support and resonance up to G5 and can support/have an open sound up to A5 in her head voice. She has never supported above that but she can still control her head voice fairly well (B5s in About The Boy and The End, C6 while she was playing around and singing Phantom of the Opera).
    Perrie's belting only got worse after her tonsils were removed. To a certain extent, it was good until 2014. After 2014, her belting slowly became worse until she rose up again in 2018 since she got some rest but as of when this video was made, her technical belting was declining. Perrie had consistent support up to C#5 in 2011/2012 and C5 in 2013/2014, after which she regressed to a B4 until 2019, which is when she started to get C5 back. Perrie strains a lot after Eb5 since she raises her larynx and there is also a lack of support.
    Perrie's vocal agility is the worst in the group but I can't blame her because her deep and powerful/weighty voice doesn't really allow it. However, she is surprisingly good at runs for someone with a voice like hers. Like you said, she does well with simple, slow runs but if she does anything harder than that... I'd rather not, thank you 😭
    Perrie's lower register, despite being her weakest, is quite strong, which only shows how well-developed her voice is. She always had consistent support down to G#3. The only reason her lower register is weaker than Jade's is because she often loses volume below F#3 while Jade doesn't. Pez sometimes lowers her larynx below G3 in order for there to be even a little volume output in her low notes but it just backfires on her so eventually, she stopped doing it.
    4. Jesy:
    Jesy is a criminally underrated vocalist, simply because she doesn't belt/hit high notes as much as the other girls. Jesy's more about emotion and authenticity than vocal slayage and technique but when she does hit those big notes.she SLAYS THE HELL OUT OF THEM.
    Jesy's upper register is probably her strongest but that's not saying much since it isn't the best. But her upper register isn't weak at all. In songs like Touch (Acoustic), The End, Reggaetón Lento (Remix) and A.D.I.D.A.S., her head notes/falsettos are flawless. Jesy actually loses resonance at F#5 and not B5 because she can't support anything above F#5 in head voice.
    Jesy's middle register is her most underutilised. Jesy rarely belts above B4 (she has been hitting quite a lot of C5s and C#5s in the Get Weird and Glory Days eras but C#5 is the actual borderline for her). A lot of people may not believe this but Jesy is a better belter than Jade. She consistently supports and resonates up to B4 when she isn't forcing her vibrato out (something she does sometimes as a stylistic choice). Jesy's natural vibrato is quite fast and allows her to resonate quite well.
    Jesy's agility is really good.for someone with a voice like hers (sometimes, I feel like her voice is darker than Perrie's but again, that might just be me). Jesy's agility in her upper register is literally unbeatable. Jesy executes the run on the word 'yourself' in Touch (Acoustic) in her upper register and it's actually really fast and complex but the one that follows is very easy. Most of her runs are quite simple tbh.
    In terms of registers and overall control, Jesy isn't better than the other girls but in terms of knowing her limits vocally, Jesy definitely beats the others because she rarely goes out of her comfort zone (even in her lower register).
