    I have 8 raised beds 8x4x2.5. I filled the bottom with thick layer of cardboard picked up and recycled for free. Next lots of wood and limbs that break down. I would have prefered large dead wood to act as a sponge for my water to hold into place. I covered that with leaves I collected everywhere I found. I used peat moss and potting soil for the top. Hope this gives you ideas for your raised garden beds. Also I bought 2 rabbits so I could have natural fertiliizer for my garden. The pellets do not burn the plants. I collect rain water for my garden and have a bucket that I added the spent straw and poo with rain water and allowed that to ferment covered for a short time. Love how you have quickly learned so much and shared your experience. I got excited about using the metel filing cabinets so I am on the hunt for cheap to free ones. This is my 3rd season of growing in my raised beds. It's addictive and encouraging to do so much that is cheap great tasting food. Many Blessings continue to share your beautiful garden.

    What a tease making us wait for part two!
    that white bug with the plates across it's back may actually be a friend. I didn't get a great look, but it might be a baby lightning bug, which eats pest bugs.
    As a long term assist with all the munching caterpillars and slugs, you might consider making and hanging up some different birdhouses around the property. Busy bird parents would really appreciate a convenient hunting ground (your garden) to bring food (pest buggies) to their babies.
    For labeling the garden, I've liked when folks use cardinal directions. The North Garden, the West Garden, etc. My personal setup though is "front beds, deck, and main garden"

    • @ourfreedomsong
      @ourfreedomsong  Год назад

    Those white bugs could be mealy bugs. I get them on my tomatoes. They’ll suck the moisture out of the plants and ants will often come and “farm” them. The mealybug secretes a sweet sticky liquid the ants love. They then protect and move around the mealybugs. Squish them if you see them and I’ve read a liquid dish soap mixture can be sprayed on as well.

    • @ourfreedomsong

      @@ourfreedomsong No problem! I'm seriously allergic and had no clue what it looked like for several years. The oils can live on fences or surfaces for months or longer and don't wash away with water. If you wind up with it on tools or surfaces, spritz with rubbing alcohol and wipe it down with a disposable cloth or paper towel. Taking vitamin C can help keep you from breaking out if you know you are likely to be exposed to poison ivy, oak, sumac and of course wash as soon as possible. Dead Weed Brew does knock it back on a sunny day so you just need to pull it out.

      I'm in 5A or 6B and it took several years to get a rosemary going. Just lost it due to a dog peeing on it all winter, but what finally worked was planting it so that it had a concrete patio and sidewalk on 2 sides. It doesn't keep the cold away completely, but it slows down the temp changes so it doesn't shock as much.
