Its basically shorthand for people in the aviation arena, which I was a part of for 33 years. For example, the use of a phonetic alphabet during radio communications eliminates errors. I still use it to this day to spell out my last name, my email address or my street name. Standardization of using an abbreviated form to name runway numbers or to communicate clearly has made operations run smoothly, quickly and safely for years.
