It started because the turntables used to get too hot during "concerts" or "parties" so the Dj's slowed down the tempo to give the turntables a chance to get cooler, but the slowed version became more liked. In the movie "ya no estoy aquí" you can see a good portrait of the slowed cumbias and the cholombianos group (they took this genere as their representative music)
