2020 Pichon Baron is an amazing bottle. I was at the Chateau this year and tasted the 2011, 2016 and 2021-2022. These were just amazing wines. The 2011 was the most surprising, maybe it was the age but the 2011 was showing the best for an off vintage compared to the other powerhouses we tasted.
Its basically like every year a boring list....ticking always the same boxes. Always friendly to the big brothers of wine and the obvious commercial options. Antinori and Argiano are good examples. For me in Brunello there much better options in 2018 and more original than Argiano. Not to mention that 2018 is a poor vintage in Brunello so kinda weird that its the number one wine. The same for Antinori....boring boring. This type of list doesnt do any good to the credibility of the publication and feeds well the idea that there are other factors contribuiting to the choices made.
Good to see Argiano getting the recognition it deserves ! I recall spending 4 to 5 hours with a Biondi Santi family member when we visited Tuscany long time ago !
With WS it's Top 10 or 100 list is usually pretty generic and "safe". We can't expect to see wines from Greece, Germany, Eastern Europe or anything too "exotic". I suppose with a Taurasi Riserva and a Marlborough SB they are being more flexible and open minded than in previous years. It was nice to see a variety of US PNs at semi-affordable price points. Wines that stood out this year to me: Cesari Bosan Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva 2013; Abbazia di Novacella "Orchestra" 2019, Alto Adige; Karmen SarapCilik Vadi 2015, Northern Anatolia, Turkiye; Mariano J. Lacort Rioja Gran Reserva 2009; Val Delle Rose Poggio al Leone Morellino di Scansano Riserva 2019; Weinrieder Marzlese Sweet March GV 2013; Val di Suga Brunello di Montalcino 2015; Bock Chardonnay Battonage 2020 (Villany, Hungary); Nemeth--es-Nemeth Palkonyi Margo 2017, Villany, Hungary; Fehervari Reserve Brut Rose, Nagy-Somlo, Hungary; Arvay Tokaji Single Vineyard Selection Furmint 2018; Chelti Winery, Tsinandali 2020, Kakheti, Georgia.
Marchese Antinori La Braccesca Achelo 2019 was on sale (21.95 CAD)and wow caught me off guard, loved it! Bought 2 and wanted a case but all sold out. Cakebread Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon (yum yum but pricey). Brancaia Riserva Chianti Classico 2018 👍and when Renato Ratti Marcenasco Barolo 2018 finally became available again (only 10 bottles on clearance) I bought them all. Just to name a few 🙂🍷cheers!
I agree with your comments. No big surprises. Having said that Lynch Bages is indeed a fantastic Bordeaux. I have tasted around 25 of the grand cru classe wines and Lynch Bages ranks amongst the best
Lynch Bages is already decades a solid buy. I like Pauillac, yet neighbour Saint Julien often offers more wine for the money. This appellation seems to deliver a supreme balance between the power of Pauillac and the finesse of good Margaux. Bargains you won't find in these appellations. I'm happy to see Montalcino on the top of that list, but you're right, Brunello's got expensive and I concur with your preference for Chianti Classico and the Rosso's (Montalcino, Montefalco ).
Argiano is a good pick but no #1, it seems that they went down a less expensive route this year, based on consumers complaints from previous years of the the top ten being very hard to reach wines, pricewise. Overall, not crazy about the list…….never see anything from Flowers, Shaffer-Double Diamond, Patine, these were the best I tasted this year.
I just darnk the last Bottle of 1990.. and it was Magic.. If you have more of the 2020. celler it for 20 yer's, if you can. And you will see what old Bordeaux can do. 😁
I agree WS top ten is vanilla! Prices for domestic wines seem to be getting crazy. At least there was a 40. Pinot .... I’ll be interested in seeing the rest of top 100
Great job Maththew ! Nice lineup, great wines and all somewhat deserve mention but i am with you....although, italy and US are well represented there are other areas with wines that represent a bit more diversity in taste. Some beauties from Spain, Portugal and Greece!!!! to round off Europe and how about Australia? anything from south America? Come on Wine Spectator, lets open up to the rest of the world:) please....
Willamette dammit! (As a Willamette U. alum, I'm embarrassed to admit I also mispronounced Willamette when I first went to visit the school, and some nice old ladies on the Amtrak taught me this trick.) Love your videos! However, I didn't really like the Résonance Pinot at the Las Vegas WS Grand Tour. I like pinot noirs from Domaine Serene and Purple Hands much more.
I love pauillac Mmmm i would love to do one of this list some year i think the best wine we taste this year was Dominio de Calogia Cuvee S 2019 or maybe Termanthia 2015 would love to taste more high end super wines but they are so expensive.... T_T
The reviews like "Wine spectator" are made for wealthy people. Wines starting at $80 are all about marketing price. I don't care about the scores anymore. I find your videos much more exciting to get to know new wines.
WS top 100 is always pretty boring because a large part of their ratings are availability and affordability, specific to the US market. The only one of the top 10 I've had recently was the Raen and it was pretty underwhelming. Blah.
Wow. Brunello is a lot more in the USA! No way I'd pay 90 for argiano. As far as argiano brunello 2018 goes, meh. Dont understand how its snuck in at number 1.... Nice wine but not spectacular and especially not at 90 dollars. As far as Bordeaux goes.... Always have to include at least one it seems although the more wine i drink the less Bordeaux i seem to drink. Hard to find well priced thats drinking right now. It seems whenever someone ups their game, 10+ years later when the wine is right, the price has gone through the roof.... And im not interested in collecting wine long term.
@@drmatthewhorkey My favourites are Ciacci Piccolomini Pianrosso, Le Chiuse, Valdicava, Poggio di Sotto, Uccelliera, Fuligni, Cupano (their 2015 riserva is beyond insane) and Podere le Ripi.
What's your point? 1/3 of the wines were from the U.S. It sounds like that wasn't enough for you, or you're not happy with Matthew's assessment? What's your deal?
Nah.... Matthew's palate is spot on. Anyone who blind tastes as much as he does (in front of a camera no less) is a rock star in my book. The top 100 list means nothing really. There's a million good wines out there. And #25 or #50 could just as easily been in the top 10. And #9 could have been #30. It's all subjective.

2010 - 2011 was a really good year in france same here in spain some wines are really good 2010 some are really good 2011
Ohhh an underrated vintage too
Argiano also makes a IGT Non Confunditor a Cabernet Merlot Sangiovese blend Can be found for $20
Yepppers good call
The Resonance Pinot on the list of my next Oregon visit!
Ahhhh enjoy it back in Bend
It’s good, but there are so many better Oregon Pinots. I can’t help but believe the French connection is why it’s on the list.
looking for the argiano right now!love this grape....surprised by this list. especially the amount of pinots
I love Sangio too!
Thanks for the great video Matt. Actually having the Greywacke tonight with wings. Really good value.
Enjoy!
Awesome! Thanks for the breakdowns, good ol' kiwi Sav ftw!

@@drmatthewhorkeyVery memorable indeed. We even had lunch with him in town and he was definitely a bit of a rock star !
Lynch Bages never disappoints Too bad I can't afford it anymore Had the 2005 out of magnum this summer It was excellent
Ohhh lucky you!
I was so glad to see a Taurasi make it in the top ten spot as well as a NZ Sauvignon Blanc. Big fan of both.
Ahhh a NZD Sb lover!
Ranking wines against each other is to completely miss the point of wine. Great video!

My fav Antinori value wine is the Badia a Passignano Gran Selezione Chianti Classico, and Radici Fiano de Avellino is delicious white!!
🍷🍷🍷🍷😬

Just picked up a case of the 2018 Argiano at the grocery store for 63 USD/bottle!
Niceee you beat the crowd

Also, was that the rolex ‘hulk’ on your wrist?

I tasted the 2020 Marchese Antinori Riserva last night and I hated it. $47 for a Chianti is ridiculous.
Ohhh what didn’t you like?
If you hate chianti from antinori you hate wine.
39€ for the Marchesi Antinori Chianti Riserva here in Germany.
Niceee
