  • In this video I explained the components of suspension system
    1.Control arms
    Control arms tie the wheels to frame in such a way that wheel can move up and down without any restriction. Wheel cannot move forward or rear ward with respect to frame. Inner end of control arm is attached to frame with the help of a bolt and other end of control arm attached with steering knuckle with the help of ball joint
    2. Ball joints
    Ball joint is a flexible joint which provide flexibility during upward and downward movement of front wheel. It also provides swivel point during revolving the steering knuckle right and left during steering front wheels.
    Ball joint consists of ball stud and ball socket. Ball joint may be pressed, bolted or riveted, into the control arm.
    3. Steering knuckle
    Steering knuckle connects the front wheel to control arm. Front wheel revolve around the wheel spindle with the help of wheel bearings. Wheel spindle is a part of steering knuckle. In case of rigid suspension steering knuckle is attached to axle beam with the help of king pin. In case of MacPherson suspension system, steering knuckle attached to strut assemble and lower control arm and in case of wish bone suspension system steering knuckle attached to upper control arm and lower control arms.
    4. Strut Rod
    A strut rod is a steel rod that is fastened between lower control arm and frame.it control the forward and rear ward movement of control arm. Rear end of strut rod is bolted to control arm while front end of the strut rod has rubber bushings that soften the action of the strut rod. These rubber bush allows a controlled amount of lower control arm movement while allowing full suspension travel.
    5. Control Arm Bush
    Control arm bush not only provide a bearing surface for control arm but also protect the frame of vehicle from rod jerks. Control arm bush consists of outer and inner steel shell and rubber bush outer steel shell is pressed fit in control arm while inner steel shell work as a bearing and helps the control arm to pivot easily around the bolt.
    6. Pivot point
    Pivot point is a point around which point an object can revolve easily such as inner control arm bush
    7. Sway bar (stabilizer bar)
    Sway bar, also called Stabilizer bar or Anti roll bar is a U shaped spring steel bar. It is used to keep the body from leaning excessively side by side during sharp turns. It's both ends are fastened to lower control arms with the help of Z links. Sway bar is attached to cross member of frame at two points. D bushes are used to protect metallic contacts. When the car rounds a corner, centrifugal force makes the outside of the body drop and
    the inside of the body rise. This twists the sway bar. The sway bar's resistance to this twist limits body lean in corners.
    8. Track rod (lateral control rod)
    A track rod, also termed lateral control rod, is sometimes used on rear suspension systems to prevent axle side-to-side movement when cornering. The track rod installed almost parallel to the rear axle. One end of track rod is attached to axle while other end attached to frame Track rod is usually used on those vehicle in which coils springs are used for rear wheel.
    9. Jounce Bumpers
    Jounce bumpers are blocks of hard rubber that protect metallic suspension parts striking to frame when the wheel hits heavy bumps or holes.
    1.0 Shock Absorbers
    Shock absorbers limit spring oscillations (compression-extension movements) to smooth the car's ride. Without shock absorbers, the car would continue to bounce up and down
    after striking a dip or hump in the road. This would make the ride uncomfortable and unsafe.
