I love this video! It’s so generous of you to make and share this content. Passing the DipWSET exam with Merit is so impressive but sharing tips and advice on passing it is not only impressive but also inspiring and incredibly generous. Congratulations, John! I hope you will have more achievements in the world of wine as you continue your exciting wine journey. Happy to follow along! Santé!
Congrats John! 🎉🍷🍾🥂 A wonderful achievement at the highest levels of wine! 👏🏻 It’s not easy goal for all and and you deserved it! I have much respect for you. Learning never stops!!! I love your content and these so well made and educational YT videos. Thank you very much for sharing your in-depth knowledge of wine and the most valuable information about WSET with us, John, that's brilliant. Your enthusiasm keeps us motivated and I have got excited about your WSET Diploma graduate, once again congratulations. Wishing you all the best for your future endeavors. Cheers! 🥂💫
Congratulations! I believe you had a lot of work and achieved it eventually. Even though you are so busy, you also shared very good information through this channel all the time. Very good job! Hope I want to hear from you that great news of pass the MW sometime later.
Wow, John, Kudos. Next stop: MW. When I first became interested in wine (more than 45 years ago) I ran monthly tastings for friends and colleagues and went deep into the subject. One of the wine merchants I used for the tastings was going through the WSET programme and he gave me all the past papers he was using to revise. I couldn't actually sit the exams for real because in those days one had to work in the trade to be eligible. With a bit of effort I managed passes at certificate and advanced certificate level (these are now, I think, termed levels one and two). They were exclusively theory and, therefore, quite easy to cram for. However, when it came to Diploma level, there was a massive step up in difficulty, with blind tastings and so on. At this point I got my coat and left the building. I have, therefore, some idea of the magnitude of your achievement. Also, I did my MBA whilst working full-time so I understand how difficult it is just to find the time: not much availability for friends, family or any kind of social life. I really enjoyed this video. Thanks.
Thanks very much, Steven! Much appreciated. It definitely took a lot of dedication, but I’m very glad I did it. Learned so much along the way. They do have an industry work requirement for the MW, so I’ll have to look into that a bit. Very happy with the DipWSET though. Very glad you enjoyed the video!
This is a great and very helpful video, John! You should be so proud, you look amazing up there on that stage! 🌟 Very inspiring to see you conquer this! Huge congratulations and hope you're enjoying the trip! Big cheers! 🎉🍷🍾🥂👏🏻
Amazing amount of work. Congratulations! I’ve had a few people tell me even if I don’t do all 6 sections that D1 is absolutely a good one to do. I do have a science background, quite a bit of plant biology and smattering of plant genetics.
Thanks for putting out this this video. I will be starting my d3 tomorrow and will be sitting my d3 exam in Oct of this year. I found the examiners’ reports to be particularly helpful along with the essay questions in my quizzes( I am doing it online). The 90 minute and 60 minute exam times for d1 and 2 weren’t too bad at all as I was done with d1 in 60 minutes and went back to add a few more comments took me a total of about 70 minutes(when I walked out of the exam room I wasn’t really confident about whether or not I had passed the exam), I was able to finish d2 in about 45 minutes. So far, I have found the online quizzes(particularly the written ones), discussions and and examiners’ reports(some are repeats or very similar to the written qs from the online quizzes to be extremely helpful.
Congratulations and salut ! This is a really difficult exam and a lot of work , specially when you have another job , like me ! But I think it’s worth the effort , cause passion like this you can’t fight ! Thanks for sharing the info !
Very informative. Thank you and well done. I'm not at all surprised you passed with merit. I would love to meet up someday and enjoy a drink with you. That's most likely to happen in the U.K or Spain. All the best. WT
Thank you. Glad it was helpful in terms of providing more information about what level 4 entails. Hopefully some of the tips will help with level 3 as well!
Congrats and thank you! This is very helpful. I am currently in my diploma studies. It sounds like you took the remote class offered directly by WSET London; is that right?
Thank you! Very glad it was useful. I took the online class, but did so through an approved course provider in the United States and then traveled to the site to take my exams in person.
Thank you John! This video is very helpful to understand what I will be facing as I start Level 3 next month. Creating flashcards and written outlines are great ideas. I was not aware that examiners comments on prior exams are available. Can you please tell me where I can access them? Thank you! - Ed
Thank you! Very glad it was useful! I’m not sure they do them until level 4, but I was an online student and they were posted on the student portal along with the textbooks for each unit and the specifications, etc. So you might check your online portal. I still have a few old ones too, albeit for level 4. If you would like to see one, just shoot me an email and I’ll send it when I have a moment. AttorneySomm@gmail.com
Thank you for this helpful information and for all your content. I'm planning on doing Level 4 here in NYC, and I'd like to combine it with wine travel so that I could get a more hands-on approach to what I'm studying, a sort of experiential learning. Would you recommend I do that before the Wines of the World D3 section?
Thank you! Glad the videos are useful! Absolutely! The travel really helps you remember things you learn. I would visit areas on which you are weakest and know the least.
@@AttorneySomm Good point! I know we get into the wine regions more extensively in D3 than in Level 3. I don't know if there are more wine regions featured in D3 though that were not covered in L3.

Thanks! Great question. With substantial deliberation it may differ, but off the top I would say: (1) 1921 Yquem; (2) '55 Biondi Santi; (3) 61 Petrus; (4) 45 Mouton; & (5) 59 Haut-Brion.

Not sure if you’ve discussed this in another video, but I’m very interested in why you pursued the WSET given you seem to already have a successful career in law and the WSET is a huge investment of time and money. Was it just for the pure love of wine? Or do you intend to move into the wind industry one day
Thank you! I passed my level 3 back in 2015 or so and my instructor encouraged me to continue. I had a friend who was doing it so we went through it together and had a tasting group. I’m doing some work now on marketing and other initiatives in the industry and enjoy it. In Beaune now!
@@AttorneySomm Congrats! I was more referring to why you pursued the WSET in the first place, not just level 4. Was this before you became an attorney? Not trying to be nosey, just curious because I don’t see too often that someone who is a wine collector as a hobby pursues the WSET diplomas unless they work in the wine industry already
@@jacob9540 Ah. I’ve been a member of a wine club in Dallas. We do lots of blind tasting. I wanted to get better at that. And I was intellectually interested to learn more about it.
