I first heard Redd play at a bar in Austin years ago. Had no idea who he was, but I got nothing else done that afternoon. I totally agree about his stratospheric status as a guitarist. And his singing ain’t half bad neither. I also enjoy his offhand and self-deprecating humor that bleeds into his musical style too. He’s the complete package: a jokey telecaster master of the universe with a classic country baritone.

In the 80s Redd came to my town in Clinton Gregory's band. We opened for them at a club we played at frequently, and got to see Redd play in person. I play a Telecaster, and had won guitar player of the year here in Maine. I called him the "bus driver" because seeing him took me to school! We got to hang out between shows. He was very smart, funny and just a nice man. I learned a lot of great licks that day! As you can see here, he plays clean and very accurately, as well as creatively. He milks so many sounds out of his axe. Other than a tad of reverb, what you here is clean. Just awesome technique. Thank you for this video, it is great and so nice to see him play again!

The entire band is awesome. I found out years ago, practicing in a house where we had to keep the noise level down, that there's an art to playing in a less loud manner: the art of subtlety is no joke. I absolutely love Redd's jazzy, Western-swing meets chicken pickin' & hybrid picking, with hints of lap steel and pedal steel flourishes, giving the impression that there are two or three other band members! Spectacular guitar works. Red is certainly the most under-rated guitar player in America. Years with Merle really polished his playing. Not many current guitarist can match Red in country, jazz, swing etc. He's brilliant.

Mike Bourque and Redd Volkaert are my two most favorite guitar smokers ever! Mike is the only one I have shared stage with many times. Maybe Redd will hit me up one day for some shuffles that swing.

Redd Volkaert (born 1958) was a successor to Roy Nichols in Merle Haggard's backing band, and is "among the country’s top Telecaster guitar slingers." Volkaert won a 2009 Grammy for Best Country Instrumental Performance. While best known as a Fender Telecaster player, with a personal collection that includes a 1953 Fender Telecaster, a 1951 Fender Nocaster, a 1958 Fender Esquire and a 1950s-style Hahn Telecaster. Volkaert has lent his name to guitars made by other companies, including Asher.
Redd's band has been playing Saturdays, and Redd plays with Heybale!, the Sunday night house band, at The Continental Club in Austin, Texas.

As a long suffering frustrated guitarist, and strong fan of Tele-slinger music over the years, I've read about Redd frequently. This is the first time I've knowingly checked him out. Anytime I can ask "how does he do that?" 😮 ...I know I'm onto something good 😅

Redd is off the charts great. A guitarist could learn more from this one hour video than years of lessons if they'd pay attention to how Redd fills between lyrics, for one thing. And the drummer and bassist are solid as a rock. One of these days maybe I'll be lucky enough to see Redd live.

I have been a subscriber of Guitar Player magazine for well over twenty years. I was an avid reader of it prior to subscribing... It is an absolute injustice and lack of insight that Redd has not been on the cover 7-15 times! He is an absolute genius and can play any style that he wants to (just search some of his videos - one of him even getting down on some heavy rock and roll with Ted Nugent, wielding a tele like it was a battle axe). He is absolutely one of my all time favorite players ever!!! God Bless Redd Volkaert!!!
