  • In this episode we explore the infamous Kings Park Psychiatric Center. As one of the most well known asylums in the New York area, there was lots of graffiti and vandalism, but we still managed to find some cool things left inside. We were also shocked by the sheer number of other people inside the building with us who were also exploring.

When I was in college I met my future wife. It was 1977 when we met. She worked for Kings Park and lived on the grounds in a staff building. It was an amazing place. I spent many nights there before we finally got an apartment. Those were good times. Many stories to share.

I grew up here. This was basically my backyard. They wanted to bulldoze all of the buildings but realized that there was too much asbestos and therefore didn't have the proper budget. So instead, they built a few bike and walking paths around the buildings so people could still enjoy it. They seem to slowly be tearing down the buildings one by one, and I'm not sure what their plan is for the future.
EDIT: Back when the hospital was still running, patients would escape every now and then. It is located right across from a school. My history teacher once told a story that a patient found his way into their classroom when he attended school there, and it took the teacher a little bit of time to realize that there was an extra person sitting in the classroom. I don't know how often patients escaped, but due to his deliverance of the story, I'm going to say pretty often.

As a former patient there I can assure you it was WAY creepier when it was in operation. Just for starters, my doctor was arrested a few years after my release for being a Nazi war criminal. I devised a way to leave the building for short periods by jamming a door latch that we passed on our way to and from the cafeteria. This was years before camera type security. I saw things and worse yet, HEARD things that were like your worst nightmares. I have no idea what was going on. Shock treatments were common as well as drug experimentation. This experience took me from being a brat ass teenager who never needed for anything to a mental survivalist. And after I was released it wasn't long before the man in me began to emerge with compassion and concern for others and a belief in God. I gave thanks for everything I had and began making amends for the abuse I put my parents through. Now some 50 years later they are long dead and I'm trying to deal with the loss of so many friends and family and am still using the strength I gained by the experience here. If you have a moment give just a short prayer for all who were not so lucky as I .

I work at this state park, the park cops are not allowed to go into the buildings there cause of the asbestos. There was this one incident where they arrested a kid from a building and he was covered with asbestos, and contaminated the cop car, the cleaning costed over 10,000$.
You guys really should all be wearing asbestos mask at all buildings, probably even need to throw your clothes away afterwards since they’ll get contaminated. Seeing these people with zero protection gives me anxiety.
Edit: Yes exposure time matters, but there’s a reason why workers who temporary work in asbestos areas need full protection.

    • @quackaddict620
      @quackaddict620 5 лет назад +65

Exactly. They need to look up asbestos remediation. Tyvek suits with rubber gloves, boots, goggles. All seams taped, shower when you exit with a guy there in the same attire to put the suits in a trash bag and seal it. Every thing you have came into contact with could have asbestos on it. Including your cars, washer, other clothes, and possibility of exposing your families to it as well. While I enjoy your videos, this makes me cringe thinking about it.

I know asbestos’s is not healthy and is bad for you but you only live once and it is there choice I know personally I would much rather enjoy the life and time that I have here and not alway worrying about what could happen and what can hurt me and what is unhealthy plus exploring old buildings especially this one (which should be classified as a historical building and should be taken care of and turned into a museum or something so that all the history here is not lost) is keeping history alive and I love exploring places like this it’s a view to the past.
P.S. When asbestos was first being used for stuff like siding and table tops and such we all thought that is was a great invention and now is bad so in another 50 years it would be interesting to see what stuff were using now will be bad for us then.

Generally, you need to be exposed to a lot of respirable sized asbestos fibers over a long period of time to get asbestosis or mesothelioma. It's not going to happen in one day of walking around in this place. Asbestos is 'safe in place' and unless disturbed by drilling, grinding or other type activities that would create asbestos dusts it poses relatively little risk. No doubt there would be some asbestos dusts present through degradation of material but no where near the levels required to cause someone harm (>0.1 fibres per cubic centimeter of air). As someone who has done a LOT of airborne asbestos monitoring, I know what I'm talking about.

My girlfriend and I plus a couple other people came here on July 4th. I don't know the number of the building we were on top of but we could see for miles. The whole horizon was filled with fireworks exploding. I've never seen anything like it. I recommend anyone to check it out one year.
But the story doesn't end that well. As we're leaving we were walking outside the building and about 100 yards down the road a truck flips his headlights on and hauls ass coming straight for us screaming "get the fuck out of here!" We try to hastily run away and then another truck comes from around the corner this one with a spotlight on the roof shining it in all the brush. We immediately fell to the floor just laying dead still. The truck was about 50 feet away from us. I don't know how he didn't see us. He finally drives off and we run. I don't think I've ever ran that fast. My adrenaline was through the roof.
My girlfriend says "I think I cut my foot." She was wearing sandals (worst possible footwear.) We sneak back in the building and we finally inspect her foot. Holy shit there was blood everywhere. A small trail behind her. We finally make our escape to the main road. Get to the hospital and 7 stitches later we were on our way.
Needless to say. I'd never forget that night.

Me and my friend went down to see, and there was nobody there at all just a pipe resting on the floor debris and an extreme drop in temperature. I dont think it was another kid cause it was at 3am, and all other doors that could be used by a prankster to get to that stairwell to fool us were sealed shut besides the one door we used to get to that point. I live here on Long Island. One of my good friends is a police officer that patrols the area. Regular people can come and park. They can ride their bikes or walk around the grounds. Some people walk their dogs. It's actually a pretty cool place to be. They ask that you don't go in any buildings or pass any fences or blockades. If you do they will arrest you for trespassing.
Since I'm friends with him I get to go and explore and do basically whatever I please. I've been all over the property and it really is an amazing place to experience. It's sad that people can't explore the place without destroying property or spraying graffiti on everything.
PS- Definitely don't come on Halloween night. Every single person thinks it would be so cool and they literally have like 20 cops patrolling and tons of people get escorted off the property or arrested.

To all of the people getting annoyed that people go there, this is kind of like a hangout spot for people. Almost all Long Islanders know about this. Most likely you are from a different place like California or something. Also if you go to my channel I also visited this place but filmed it, I have been there multiple times but never went inside because of all of the sicknesses. Even being near those nails you can get sick, so if you go there don't touch your face or any other sensitive parts. I hope you get it all now! I am a Long Islander and that's why I know this. If you are new to the island please make sure you do your research to find fun places and to e safe a few towns are safe and alot aren't. Have a fun day and stay safe! Oh yeah i forgot about COVID-19 stay healthy too! And don't go after 7pm it's illegal you can get arrested, if you are wear all black and blend in with the dark i gave you ilegal advise! whoopsie!

Many asylums were closed in the '80s under Ronald Reagan.
It started before his presidency but he cut funding severely, thus asylums were no longer profitable.
This contributed largely to the surge of the homeless population.
For some people, advances in medication (which then made home care a possibility) became an option ... but not for enough.
In many cases, prisons are the new asylums.
They care nothing/know nothing about treatment.
Most prisons are for-profit institutions, today.
They're more than happy to take over where the asylums left off.
No matter how you look at this issue, we, as a country, have failed to help those in need.
To think that people would have had a (potentially) better life in a place like you're showing ... GOD help us.

    • @saxachewon8062
      @saxachewon8062 7 лет назад +17

Yeah, Ronald Reagan and Pat Brown gov. of California put the final nail in the coffin of most asylums. It's also worth pointing out that even before pharmaceuticals were widely available, many asylum patients needed round-the-clock supervision anyway. I heard a report that 60% of homeless people are mentally ill. We could get rid of a lot of homelessness if we re-opened institutions for mentally ill people. They would probably have a better quality of life, too.

First, the bulk of the people that lived in these large psychiatric campuses were geriatric patients afflicted with diseases like dementia, alzheimer's or strokes . The care of those completely shifted to local nursing homes, assisted living centers and in home care.
If we're limiting the discussion to the care of the mentally ill, JFK is the one that pushed the legislation to close the large psychiatric hospitals and pivot federal funding to community health centers (Community Mental Health Act of 1963). Appellate courts and changes in legislation at the state level around the same time made it much more difficult for people to be committed involuntarily. Advances in psychopharmaceuticals seemingly obviated the demand for long term psychiatric care so little money was spent on maintaining large campuses like Kings Park. They were designed to be more or less self sustaining with able bodied patients providing enough labor and economic activity to not need large tax outlays from the public fisc . With much lower patient population, these places are nonviable. I doubt there are 5,000 non-forensic inpatient beds for long term psychiatric care in the entire United States whereas Kings Park had around 15,000 of those beds alone at its height. Psych hospitals, where they still exist, focus on stabilizing patients and returning them to the community as rapidly as possible.
I do agree with you that many of the mentally ill would be better served if those hospitals still existed. There is a spectrum of people that can't manage day to day living activities and need a structured and safe environment like these hospitals provided.

One was nasty (although we never saw the person, but heard them from the same floor as he heard us because he kept yelling things like "Who the #5$# is that?" and other things), the other two weren't as bad and mainly thought we were stealing their stuff. With the two that weren't as bad, basically we "agreed" we'd leave eachother alone (my guess is that they deal with urbexers quite a bit). This is also why it's a good idea not to go urbexing by yourself as well.
This is also why I make subtle but audible clicking noises when I enter areas... partially so I can see if anyone responds (like a homeless person) or worse, a wild animal.

My vans on the other hand lasted all but a month before their glue separated from the sole and canvas, and i suffered foot injuries from sole punctures from malleable safety wire, to seven inch spikes hitting bone from medjul palms quite often. They've got some of the best damn durability to abrasion I've seen a sole withstand on a shoe I'll give them that, but boy does it let pointed things slide through it like it's nothing. I'd recommend avoiding them while exploring due to the potential of used syringes discarded by junkies or other syringes being left behind by a staff told to abandon the facility.
You can do anything in boots you can do in athletic shoes, you just gotta wear them and get used to them. And when you do wear running shoes or whatever you'll feel like the flash without heavy boots constantly resistance training you

For a time there were 10k patients and 4k workers, most workers lived on the grounds. Apparently it was considered like a country club of psychiatric wards, with beautiful, well-maintained gardens, flower beds. Patients involved in occupation therapy, working in the steam power plant, milking cows, tending the farms. They had their own government, police and fire department, even their own currency that patients could earn and spend in the hospital stores.

That makes absolutely no sense. They wouldn't have their own government.

@@annas.8902 Sure it does; you can find extensive information online about the history of this place, and learn about it for yourself.
Nearly every incorporated town and city in America has it’s own government, often with elected mayors and other leaders, who implement policies and laws specific to their own jurisdictions.
That doesn’t mean they are independent from federal or state government laws and regulations.
You must be confusing the term “government” with “sovereign nation”

@@truthbydesign5146 I'm not confusing anything lol. I work for a municipality, I know what they are. I'm saying that a mental facility would not have it's own government.

@@annas.8902 It was a community of over 4k employees, many of whom lived on the grounds. It wasn’t your usual “hospital” - but large complex of dozens of buildings, with their own police, fire department, stores, power factory, farms etc.. Larger than many small towns. It’s not surprising that they had local government and elections. The old timers who were there during its prime describe it in the following youtube video, title:
“Kings Park Psychiatric Center - Closing the Center”
Please stop implying that I’m lying about this, when you can easily research this for yourself.
