The round, grey piece plugs in the centre to hold the roadway disc tight and secure. I had an early version with a yellow, flanged piece that screwed the roadway tightly to the centre pivot point. You can make car wheel spring clips from paper clips and/or with a fridge magnet taped under the car.
I had one - it was brilliant! I could never quite manage to slot the car through the middle twisty bits on the high speed. Best was to switch the lights off and drive in the dark. One of the best toys I had growing up!
My cousin had one of these when I was young and I remember there being a piece that went into the center hole and held the roadway secure. I also remember it not working that well even when it was new. It was on par with those old football games where most of the time the players just spun around on every play. Amazing that some of the toys that were not all that successful are the ones that are so popular for collectors now. Definitely a nice display piece, good find.
Ah, I've always wondered how this thing works ever since I saw it in the catalog. An amazing toy, although I have to admit that I didn't really fancy it at the time. But at least now I know how it works. Thanks for sharing!
I had the earlier version It had a very challenging narrow bridge! Great memories - had many hours of fun playing with this toy. Thank you for reviving all those memories.
This is my favourite post so far. I do so remember this toy being advertised on the TV in the run-up to Christmas. Unfortunately I didn't get it has a present. Though I am sure I would've liked too. It looks like it could of been designed better. The roads could of been made wider for one. It also seems that maybe something was missing that went into the centre to secure the road track disc to the games mechanism underneath. So funny to see the interaction you two had with the toy in trying to get it to work properly. Just like Christmas morning's were back then in the 70's.
@@toysoldiernostalgia Yep, the game had so much potential. But the design seemed to be rushed. Maybe some famous toy making company could improve on the design & re-release it for today's kids.
Wow dude, that is really cool- I totally forgot about that set. Congratulations....I always scored the toys I wanted as a kid- except the GI Aircraft carrier but that was a Bridge too Far. Nowadays, I kind of want to go back and try and get a Beachhead assault set.
It is the first mechanical toy, other than free movement, remote control cars, that I find entertaining. I have never seen this kind of set. Thanks for sharing. All the best.
That’s brought back so many memories, thank you , my Dad bought me one must have been late 70s, it was second hand , the battery cover was missing, I made one out of card. The magnet was missing , I got one from an old cupboard catch. Even the noise it made…in reality it would have clocked up many miles !!!
When you were showing the steering arm, there appears to be a light bulb on the very tip. If it was lit while driving, wouldn’t it show up through the plastic road, and make it easier to locate the steering magnet?
Yes you´re right. I have forgotten to have a look at that. It kinda worked. But I don´t think it´s powerfull enough to shine throug the painted plastic of the track. But maybe that was the point of it. I didn´t get the instructions for it but I have another coming in the mail that I think have the instructions. It probably says in there what the light is for.
I got this for Christmas around 1973 and was addicted to it. I got so good at it that I think I went in reverse round the track. Can’t believe it’s attracting huge prices now. Don’t make them like this anymore.
That's a very cool toy I've never seen in the 1970s. I would have been very excited I know that. As a 8-10 year old I was always fascinated as a youngster would be with toys. I have some memories when my parents wouldn't buy something I wanted and I'd be jumping and crying as we'd leave the store empty handed. But that's how it was back in the day. Sometimes one of my sisters who are older would buy some toy of some kind, some soldiers or some cars. But I always was for the soldiers and military vehicles.Nice toy.👍🇭🇲🐨🦘✌️
Another hit from you. Thank you. Along with my Model Kit Collection, I also have a smattering of toys that I either owned, or wanted as a child. Matchbox Motorway is one of my favourites. I wonder if you also like the old board Games, Escape From Colditz, Admirals, Battle of Britain, Formula 1, Mousetrap, to name a few. We played with these for days on end when the typical British Summer turned to rain.
The Matchbox Motorway is on my wish list for 2024. I have some old board games like Formula 1, Battle Tanks and some more. Escape from Colditz look realy cool and I want one. There´s a series that I think is called American Heritage or something that looks like realy cool games. Want to get all those in the future as well.
@@toysoldiernostalgia Excellent. I have Converted/Upgraded an old Colditz set to include actual equipment (Maps, Disguises, The Car, Reichsmarks, Ropes, Soldiers & Prisoners etc.), It helps enhance the play value. One finishes off the game by filling-in an old Postcard declaring a Home Run. Best wishes collecting in 2024.
Great video - love your enthusiasm for your new find. I had a Steer-n-go when I was a kid. As I recall it wasn't my favorite toy or anything but as a Matchbox collector I wish I had kept it. If I'm remembering correctly there was a threaded cap that went through the center of the roadway - not sure about that though.
Thanks. Maybe there´s been different versions. This one had old dual sided tape on it so I guess that´s how it attaches. There´s no threads on the arm either. Maybe I´m giving it to much credit as a toy but it´s just soooo cool.
@@toysoldiernostalgia I might be mistaken too. It's been close to 50 years since I had mine! Pretty sure you're right that there were different versions too.
It would be interesting if they made a modern version that had an RC tiny car with a camera that you could connect to a PC and see the windshield view on the screen. It could even have pedals for gas and brake
@toysoldiernostalgia true, but they don't have the steering wheel and dashboard controls like the Steer-n-Go had, the Dashboard and steering wheel setup would make it feel more like actually driving the little car, and it could come with a mat and scenery things like tiny trees that peg into holes on the mat with rocks and hills, like the old Steer-n-Go but with updated tech.
Your channel is a new discovery and a diamond find as I have similar niche Matchbox interest. This is as disappointing as as Evel Kinevels Bike , and I’m glad now I didn’t ask for it for Christmas. Well done for tracking it down though. I didn’t even know it actually existed. Plug buggies are my nemesis. I have one! The rest seem to be in Japan!
Thanks man. I think it´s better then my lousy attempts at using it. I was a bit to excited and will try to run it tommorow and realy set it up properly
@@toysoldiernostalgia love to see it working properly. How many toys in the history of toys have fallen short. My parents returned the Evel dragster ( against my wishes) TCR truck jammer ( AMW) 😂 I’d love to see this work. I looked up the V1 flying bomb set you mentioned. Never knew about that. Looks pretty cool. One I remember from the catalogues involved a bombed town diorama with a six wheeled rocket launcher. Have you got that?
The cup shaped pin in the middle goes up in order to hold the disc terrain in order not to go out of its place i think! In general a really good vintage toy like me with stuff i didn't had as a kid and wanted it allot i understand the feeling! Happy new year with health my friend!
Nope it was attached with a piece of double sided tape. There was a ring left of it around the bottom of the plate and recidue on the little round attachment.

There's a few sets some missing soldiers on foot just the horse mounted.. and vice versa. Have fun.👍🇭🇲🐨🦘✌️
It would be nice if it were bigger like the racing car sets. I had a racing car set. But didn't work very well. I can't remember if that was bought for me or was given by a friend. I did have lots of classic cars Matchbox was a favourite when it came to diecast cars, trucks, Ambulance, Police, Fire engine. Everything lost when I had to leave everything behind in Australia and was forced to go with parents to Greece. Being young I had no choice. Greece had some good toys but very limited. The box art was similar copied but not quite as those fantastic Airfix packets.👍🇭🇲🐨🐨🦘✌️
