You live in paradise; what a beautiful landscape. I imagine it provides you with endless inspiration.

Thank you and yes, it's a very inspiring location. However, every paradise has its pitfalls. Out the backdoor is a wondrous landscape of beauty, yet, out the front door is a knuckleheaded burnout neighbor who is hell-bent on destroying any semblance of tranquility in our community. That's why I prefer to look out back. lol!! :)

Your back yard is a lake in New England .... wow, now THAT'S inspiring. Gorgeous.
I discovered gouache a couple years ago and it was a rough start, but quickly turned into a love affair. Hope to see more gouache videos from you

So glad you kept with it and are having such a fond experience with gouache! That's how I felt many years ago, too; then, I just stepped away. Would love to get back to that feeling! Thank you for watching and yes, we're very fortunate to be on the lake. Nothing like the sound of geese honking in the morning to get me up for work! lol!! Nature's alarm clock! :)

I have the pans. It was my first set and venture into gouache. It’s not my favorite gouache, but it’s great for some fun, mixed media journal play.

Norakag, here.. spoiler alert, Mark.. the MGraham gouache is wonderful .. and i think a starter set from
them , winsor newton , or holbein would be money better spent for any beginner .. I think this set from caran d'ache would frustrate the heck out of any gouache beginner , and discourage them from going further.. you have the patience of a saint lolol these paints are annoying to even watch lol and yes, it's very surprising from that company, but as you've said , they're student grade ( or for kids, even) ... You'll love MGraham , I think .. especially after this lousy experience lol Thanks again, for this review .. how incredible that you live on that beautiful lake!!! take care .. your friend, Norakag ..

Hey Mark, I have the gouache in pans, they are great, remind me of the watercolour cakes that I bought in my country. I can see in the inconsistency that you highlighted. I think that if you looking for a good student-professional grade gouache tried royal talens, and I think schmincke have a student-affordable grade gouache you can try. There is also sui gouache that many speak highly of, I choose to get turner for my affordable grade gouache and daler roweny, I have no issues with those. As you know I other more professional brands but I classed turner and daler roweny as affordable brands. My art is very illustrative and mainly do flat sharp lines similar to your style of painting so maybe you can find success with the brands that I mention

This video was entertaining and informative. Thank you for sharing. Please do the M.Graham gouache set and compare it to Caran d'ache set of gouache.

Thank you so much, dianethoroughman9541 - and it's so good to hear from you! I hope to get back to presenting more content soon. I've taken a break because I was not feeling passionate about being locked into an "algorithm" and felt I needed a bit of space. I would like to do a review of the MG paints, because they're wonderful to work with; however, putting them next to these Caran D'ache would be a disservice to MG, as I tried recently to work with the Caran D'ache set and was not impressed with the results. Very "student grade" paints. The MGs are for more serious artists, in my opinion. I hope all is well and wishing you and yours a very happy Thanksgiving! ~ Mark

@MDCampbell Thank you for responding, Mark. I wonder then how the M Graham gouache paints would to the Daniel Smith gouache paints. But, I do not think you should buy the Daniel Smith paints just for a comparison video. Perhaps someone else will do it. Oh, and I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

I’ve only tried gouache a few times. I was really bad at it. I didn’t wait for the layers to dry. Now that I know this I should try again but am dragging my feet because I had not the best experience. Silly, can’t let my head drive me. Maybe I can trick myself into trying it this weekend. 🙃

Wow! What a gloriously beautiful backyard you have! Lucky 🍀 you! Fun to see what you did with the Caran dAche student gouache. I would not have paid anything close to $40-$50 for that sub-pro student set...knowing it was student grade. I think for that money, you could have gotten a bigger tube set of one of the other popular student brands on Amazon like Arteza and had a much better experience. But I understand you wanted to try the set out. I have several CD products and am surprised too, given their deserved reputation for high quality, that they would not have put LF/pigment info on these colors. Schmincke, a hugely popular and very high quality European brand very popular here in the U.S. makes 3 grades of gouache...their Akademie, being the lowest grade. Even their Akademie gouache is more expensive than CD Studio, but you get full LF/pigment info. I love ❤good old WN Designer gouache too. It's tops and pricey. And Holbein makes excellent and very popular gouache & its very pricey. I'm sure M. Graham gouache is excellent too., but i don't have any.
The Schmincke Gouache range consists of
    HORADAM® GOUACHE, finest artists' gouache
    DESIGNERs GOUACHE, finest gouache
Calligraphy Gouache, finest artists' calligraphy gouache
    AKADEMIE® Gouache, fine artists' gouache

Once again a great video! I have only worked with the W/N gauche and loved them. The Caran d Ache that you reviewed looks like I wouldn’t enjoy them as much. Thank you for saving my time and money. I do however enjoy the Caran d Ache watercolor pencils. They are the best I’ve tried and I’ve tried a few throughout the years. Looking forward to your next video on whatever it is. Thank you for your honest, straight forward review.

Been wanting to buy a high quality gouche set, hope you will have a recommendation soon.
    Great posting!!

Hey Mark! I just wanted to mention that any paint that is called “studio” is meant to be student grade, not professional. Some brands do not produce every grade of every medium. In this case Carandache do not have gouache which is professional grade. Here in UK where I am this set is cheaper but still there are plenty professional grade gouaches that are cheaper and easily beat this carandache set. I own carandache studio set in cakes, it is decent student grade set which looks better that the one in tubes, but not great either. If it is affordable in USA I would also suggest Royal Talens extra fine gouache as low price end option to try. In UK I am lucky to have affordable W&N which is great gouache, Holbein is not hugely expensive in Jacksons art is great of course too. Holbein has brightest colours, W&N is reliable and great consistency, Royal Talens is a bit cheaper but a bit runnier with colours being a bit more subdued and is using dextrin as a binder which takes some learning curve to use it smoothly.
There is also Schmincke Horadam of course.. hand down everyone’s favourite, but pricey lol . But their designers line is not bad although I would take W&N or Holbein over Schmincke designers line.
On other hand in USA you are blessed with having M.Graham for cheap.. very pricey in UK :)
    Good luck in your exploration!

Hey there, I guess outside of the US, where pro quality is concerned, "cheap" is a relative thing. But M.Graham is not what we here in the US would call "cheap." It's pretty much par or even higher than the pro European brands like Schmincke & Sennelier sold here. I've just got a small set of M.Graham wc and hope to build on it. 😊

Wow, I'm used to thinking of Caran D'Ache as a high quality (and high price) brand. :/ Thanks for taking the plunge so we don't have to. [wry smile]
My good watercolors are M. Graham, so I'm looking forward to seeing what their gouaches are like.

They're like some other European national brands, in that on their home turf they will usually cover the whole gamut from school supplies to artist grade. Unless that brand also routinely exports to wherever you live and you can get it at domestic prices or reasonably close, only the artist grade ranges would typically make financial sense to go for from abroad.

    • @angiepen
      @angiepen Год назад +1

@@childesinthev.761 That makes sense. [nod] I think I'll stick with clearly artist grade stuff from Caran D'Ache.

I was disappointed with these, both for characteristics you mentioned and the near impossibility of rewetting at least some colors. (It's been a while; I don't remember if it was all the colors or just some.) I ended up giving them away. I have very little experience with gouache, but I thought these were not a good way to start. They were frustrating.

You might have had more success using the oil painting technique of “fat over lean”. You were using fat over fat. If you’re going to start fat you’d best get the color your want on your first attempt.
