      Nerdist so after watching I am faced with a burning question
      Assuming that Tails can move his tails at the speeds that you described in this video what would it feel like if Tails decided to hit you with his tails

  • @Nerdist

    *The "Kyle is wrong!" FAQ*
    1. Yes, I am assuming that Tails' tails are well designed airfoils, like helicopter blades. Would be hard to do any kind of calculation without assuming that, because how shape/angle affects the lift equation is an experimentally derived value.
    (UPDATING) -- KH

    • @SadSmash547
      @SadSmash547 7 лет назад +9

      So the real answer is that no matter how fast he spins his tails, he wouldn't be able to fly, because his tails are shaped like tails, not helicopter blades.

    • @MeoWHamster

      Also, I'm guessing that meat and fur aren't the best materials for an efficient heli blade, but that's purely speculation.

      Tail's doesn't have a tail rotor to counter the torque from his main set of tails...

  • @nattywoo475
    @nattywoo475 7 лет назад +271

    Even with that joint, his skin would have to be disconnected from his tail as well. And then you have the friction of skin to skin contact at 900 rpm. Which would most certainly cause flame. So now we have a flying helicopter fox with a flaming butthole.

    I've always wondered how Tails' tails kept spinning like a rotor. Are they disconnected from his spine (unlike most animals' tails)? and what does he do, tense his butt each time he needs to make a rotation?

    • @Jako95
      @Jako95 7 лет назад +12

      im kinda surprised more people don't know this (no offense)
      but i think it's established in one of the old cartoons he winds his tails up and then releases them in order to fly. kinda like twisting two braids up and releasing them to watch them spin.

      even if he he could fully dislocate his tail bones he'd still strain and bruce the flesh and muscles surely? In one youtube theory I recently saw they suggest Tails went to the length of replacing his orginal tails with cybernetic implants designing specifically for what he does in the games

      Not only Magnetic fields as Bryxe said, but simple matter. If the plasma is not hot enough to melt an object, it simply won't pass, and as the lightsaber is strictly straight, it would clash. Now the answer depends on the green lantern's will, considering the construct's melting temperature and resistance. About who would win the battle, even if the user has a strong will, I don't know if they can protect themselves against the force, as the lightsaber user might be able to use it. Having a strong will prevents it from being weak-minded?

    Regarding your post-script: Steven J Gould had an essay about why that kind of rotation is impossible in most living organisms (bacteria being the only known exception). Basically, the tail would have to be physically separate from the body. There would be no way to get blood into the tails, so they would have to be made of dead tissue. Also, the gap between tail and socket would allow a path for infection to enter the body.

    • @borile_moto
      @borile_moto 7 лет назад

      The Doctor. simply The Doctor. While very true that would be cooler, we are assuming that the joint worked in a manner similar to the same joints found on our bodies that have limited mobility.
      Thinking about it, wouldn't the centrifugal force cause any blood to be forced to the end of his tail?

    • @whitherwhence
      @whitherwhence 7 лет назад

      Borile He could have some type pf squeezing muscles around the blood vessels that contract at different levels to assure even blopd distribution

    • @ashtonhoward5582
      @ashtonhoward5582 6 лет назад

      hyper space makes the most sense other than cybernetics, cuz there would be no way those ball and socket joints would 1.) not have worn down from years of spinning and 2.) actually spin 'cuz muscles can't really make things spin like that. also if it is ball and sockets then in order to spin like that it means the tails' skin is separate from the rest of his skin meaning blood would really be much of a problem

    You acknowledge the shape of the blades being necessary, but don't apply it. His tails have no way to produce a downward force, like rotor blades... So there is no way he could get any lift.
    Which is no better than spinning a pole around, instead of blades, and expecting it to give lift.

    • @briand8090
      @briand8090 7 лет назад +1

      Lift is an upward force. The pitch of his tails produce the lift.

    • @kdasthenerd57
      @kdasthenerd57 7 лет назад +5

      In the classic games, tails' sprites while flying make his tails look flat, which makes sense. So we can say that all the other games are visually scientifically inaccurate, lol.

    • @SquareSquidStudios
      @SquareSquidStudios 7 лет назад +1

      +Brian D The tails are not shaped properly to have a pitch. Therefore there is no way to produce the force necessary for lift.
      That is the entire purpose of my statement... Did you even read it?

    • @kdasthenerd57
      @kdasthenerd57 7 лет назад +2

      Yes, of course. By "look flat" I also say that it looks more like blades, I said nothing about the angles, though. Some theories say that tails mechanized his tail (into tails) to be able to keep up with Sonic. This makes it easier to understand how they don't just twist and how can they, perhaps, change shape when tails is flying.

    • @Nerdist
      @Nerdist  7 лет назад +36

      Yes, this is a big assumption on my part, but I think a necessary one. Because we see him fly in the games, we need to give him the benefit of the doubt. I don't set out to debunk things, even if that approach is popular, because I want to make people's fandoms cooler, not less interesting. -- KH

    8:22 Maybe he just rotates his tails the same way we would rotate our wrists, for example, and he's simply very efficient at doing so.

    How wide would the Hulk's feet have to be to allow him to jump so high??? Wouldn't he just push his pegs into the ground otherwise?
    Because Sketchers...

    Without the highly unusual axle anatomy, his tails would rotate along their axes as they're spun. The problem is that due to the magnus effect, the resulting lift would actually be in the wrong direction. For him to be able to hover using the magnus effect by spinning his tails, his tails need to be under him, not the other way around.

    I saw a Sonic the Hedgehog animated series a while back, and at one point Tails needed to hide. With no other options, he dropped to the floor and held perfectly still. He was mistaken for a plush toy.

    Lift= coefficient of lift * 1/2 roe * velocity squared * surface area (of the airfoil)
    Usually surface area is designated by an S, not an A, and due to the fact the calculations weren't based upon surface area of the tails, your results might have been a bit different. Just being nitpicky, though. Good video!

    You too? My high-school "basic algebra" teacher was also the school football coach. Early in the school year, I once turned in a homework assignment where I had written down my answers without showing any work. He looked at it, pointed to like a simple problem of 372-X=845 and then said that it was impossible that I was able to calculate the answer to be x=473 in my head without either using a calculator. (That wasn't the exact problem, but I promise you it wasn't that different) From then on, he required me and JUST me to show all of my work on my homework I turned it because he couldn't accept in that moment that he may have just met a freshman student smarter than an adult. I completed the semester showing all my work, but because I had gotten so used to doing math on paper instead of in my head, I am to this day, 20 years later, still unable to do what should be simple math for me without needing to write it down or resorting to calculator use.

    To field that last question about Tails' tails twisting around one another, they obviously have to be counter rotating like the rotors of a Chinook, but 16bit graphics just can't render it. Without the element of counter rotation, Tails would spin out of control and crash immediately after lifting off.

    Last week I made the suggestion of adding a Sonic related episode to the series. What do we get this week? An episode on Sonic the Hedgehog's best friend, Miles "Tails" Prower! Now, I'm not saying I didn't have anything to do with it just because I asked, but I think I had something to do with it just because I asked. XD No Kyle with Eggman mustache and glasses drawn on him though... *Sad face* But I was otherwise loving this episode. XD Now if we could just get one that figures out just how fast Sonic could be?
    Yeah, probably not going to get it next week. XD;;; I still love this episode though.

    The last segment’s answer is simply because tail’s tails can be unwinding itself while spinning just like how you can rotate your wrist by unwinding your hand along with the rotation,
