i’m someone who is from new zealand, and this case literally shook the whole country, cause that kind of stuff just doesn’t happen here, just goes to show nowhere is really safe, sending all my love to her family💗
I’m from England and I remember how much news coverage it got and just how much it shocked and scared girls my age to go travelling alone. Just so sad she was out exploring the world, making memories and it was all ripped away ☹️
It's so heartbreaking. I feel for her family. As a kiwi we all feel a little responsible. Please don't let this make you afraid to travel or travel alone. Especially to NZ. It is so rare for anything like this to happen here..
I’m from mew Zealand , (Auckland) at that thank you for speaking on this case. It definitely shock the whole country as murders aren’t common here at all. So for this to happen was defs the biggest shock to our small country.
As a an sa survivor who was… by someone she met on tinder, this was heartbreaking to hear. Thank you so much for reporting on this in such a respectful manner!
Not going to entertain the asshole above me anymore, but I'm so sorry for what you went through. Please never let anyone try convince you what happened to you was your fault. I'm glad you're alive, and I hope you're healing as best as you can ❤️
The lighting, the bug sounds, the light gentle nail tapping, the photo evidence you've included, your whispers.... wow!! How PERFECT for a true crime video✨
My goodness the ambiance in this video is so warm and calming!! The lighting and night sounds I mean. You already know your true crime videos are my absolute favorite. And I look forward to them every month.
Imagine being a family member of the murdered girl, watching this and some lady commenting "My goodness, the ambiance in this video is so warm and calming, I look forward to these every month" omg!
@@lbali2896 I didn’t mean it to sound that way. There are plenty of other comments saying the lighting and ambiance in this video is great for a true crime video. It was just a compliment to Sam. I didn’t mean any disrespect to the victim or the family at all. Sorry that it came off like that.
Capillaries burst & strangulation causes the heart to beat faster, bc it’s trying to get your body’s hemoglobin to the head asap. Blood from the nose/ears is common, & there can be much more than you’d expect.
Huge red flag when someone shows more empathy for the man being jailed than the girl who is murdered/raped. Glad that other girl read the signs right and got away
I actually remember this case coming to light. I live in Essex about 45/50 minutes away from her home town so it felt very close to home for me. I’m glad you’re doing this case ❤️
Sam, I have seen a few videos on this case yet I highly enjoyed the details you spotlighted in Grace’s story. May peace come to all of those affected by her murder.
I'm from NZ and you are right a 17 year sentence for a crime like this is pathetic. That is the NZ justice system for you, he will likely not even serve the full 17 year term. Believe it or not this is actually one of the most harshest sentences handed out in NZ's history for murder.
Completely inaccurate. He will likely serve more than 17 years as it is his minimum non-parole period, but he will unlikely be released for several decades, if ever.
I don’t know why but now when I watch asmr I have to watch your videos, idk what it is about your voice that always makes me sleep. I can’t even watch other ppls vids but thank you very much I know a lot of ppl appreciate you
I am from the same town wickford in Essex England and my family knew her family quite well they where very prominent members of our local church which I also go to and I remember all the news coverage that was happening at that time it was very scary for such a small town and very daunting to have all this media coverage and it hit the town very hard as she was very well know. May she rest in peace
I remember seeing this on the news but never found out what happened but, unfortunately, the outcome was predictable. Edit: holy sh*t, I just went to check her on facebook to see that dude's comment (it had obviously been removed) but I found out that we had a mutual friend. Wow. I saw her happy birthday posts in 2018 - "Hope you're having the best time ever." That's heartbreaking.
I’m from England currently living in Auckland and although I wasn’t living here when this happened I just remember how much this shook both the UK and NZ as you would never expect something like that to happen in NZ especially someone just wanting to enjoy this amazing year abroad. I’m here with my partner but it would honestly make me wary about ever travelling solo. I don’t think I ever commented on your videos before but I always look forward to watching them especially your true crime ones as I’m obsessed with anything true crime. Thank you as always for the amazing content and for having the most soothing voice which always helps me sleep
I went to school with Grace's older brothers, and know her family. She was a very sweet kid, and it rocked the whole area as so many know the family. Thanks for covering it respectfully, I'm sure her family would be grateful. 😔❤
Yesssss!!! I’m so happy you’ve done a case from New Zealand. No one ever does New Zealand cases & this made me so so happy! 😍 Thank you. Thank you thank you !!
Hey Sam thanks for covering this case, as a kiwi it’s super close to home and still something that we as a country struggle with. Just want to clarify that he got life with a non-parole period of 17 years, similar to the US’s 18-life sentence. It’s not guaranteed he will get out in 17 years and I hope he doesn’t.
she was looking so happy around him and this douche bag took everything from her! he hid her body up the road from where I live which was completely crazy to think, and everyone was so sad when they found out what he did to her :( may Grace rest in peace though
This case is so horrific though! I’ve been in abusive relationships before and I’m super lucky I got out of them alive. Seriously. These violent guys are no joke. Poor Grace 😢
The case was so controversial that Jesse got given name suppression for months, so very few people in New Zealand even knew who he was. I agree with name suppression because it ensures innocent people don't get dragged through the mud, but in this case it's pretty ridiculous how obvious his guilt was. Also, 17 years is his minimum non-parole period, but it is unlikely he will be released for several decades.
I think he was given name suppression because he was involved in two other cases revolving around s*xual violence towards other women and it would have led to a biased jury
I remember an overseas paper or website published his name right away after his arrest so a few people knew his name before the article was taken down.
I live in the UK and was on a solo trip to New Zealand around the same time. New Zealand is so beautiful and safe, it's so terrifying that this could happen there.
This is the first video of yours that I’ve ever watched and let me just say that I love your whisper and your set up - it’s perfect 🥰 Your voice is making me so sleepy and I have a very hard time falling asleep otherwise. Thank you 💕
Most times when I watch true crime videos I can't really relate to them as they are all from the US etc. But this case happened in my city so it really does feel a little too close to home... Thank you for covering it though it is really interesting to hear your thoughts on it.
I went to the same University as Grace and was in the year below. I only met her a couple of times on a night out but it still shocks me to the core that someone could do that to her.

Hey just to update the sentence he has life in prison with a minimum of 17 years without parole. I just thought you should know that x great coverage on the case, I absolutely loved it :) btw I’m from New Zealand
I'm from NZ and stayed at a hotel across the road from the one where she died last weekend in Auckland. I walked past it many times and got the heebie jeebies!!
17yrs is our maximum prison sentence in NZ, but he won't get out in that time he'll just be denied parole for eternity. The blood, he said, was because Grace had a nose bleed earlier in the night, this was never really elaborated on. He had old flatmates testify about how weird he was and also a compulsive liar; telling stories of his wealth and status and careers were untrue he was just a broke loser. The sexual assault 8 months prior to Grace, he sat on a girls face and she pretended to be dead before he'd get off. Grace had her ankles snapped to fit into the suitcase and buried in a shallow grave. Basically the whole country got together by candle light once she was found to pay respect to Grace, we were so shocked and sad for her ❤
Started well and I just settled down with great interest when the nail tapping started. I apologise if you have some kind of uncontrollable issue with your hands, but if so , may I suggest you wear gloves or mittens. I had to switch off before even finding out what the case was about.
This story makes me so angry. Poor girl just wanted to have a good time. He took advantage of her, her interest in him and the fact she was travelling alone. Lost her life because of him. So sad and awful, RIP Grace ❤️
It’s maybe a weird question but why so much blood if she got choked to death...? Was it his ? Or is there physical body reactions going with strangling that I don’t know about ? Btw I love your videos !!
