I also just found out this afternoon that Denis Johnson had died/67 years old. He died young/I am going to be 65 this August. I have been collecting the writings of Denis Johnson for years. I just recently found used his novel 'The Laughing Monsters'. I first got into Denis Johnson when I read his novel 'Already Dead: A California Gothic' several years ago. I also have read Johnson's book of poetry 'The Throne Of The Third Heaven Of The Nations Millennium General Assembly'. I really enjoyed his poetry. Right now I can't recall what else I have read by Denis Johnson. I will miss Johnson's voice-peace (I just remembered I read Denis Johnson's book 'Seek: Reports From The Edge Of America & Beyond' essays)

I had never heard of Denis Johnson before finding this video this morning. I immediately got a copy of the book after hearing what you had to say. I am in love with this book and read it one sitting. Thank you :)

I was so sad to hear that he passed away. I really liked Train Dreams and Jesus' Son, and just recently bought Angels. Loved the anecdote at the end 😄 Thanks for sharing! Great video, as always.

An author that never failed to amaze me and who sadly I still feel as though he was not well known enough. Why in God's name does stuff like Twilight sell by the truckload and this wonderful author went Sally largely unknown to the General Public. This is a sign America.

That anecdote is pretty funny and bizarre, it would probably make for a good story *hint hint*
When I was in highschool I stole Train Dreams from the school library, it was small and thin and I was bored and dumb. I dont remember much from it though, I bought it again last year along with Jesus' Son and Tree of Smoke at a book fair. I was planning on reading them soon. These last two years have been a bummer when it comes to artist deaths.

ahaha, I liked to steal books too back in the day. I was officially banned from a bookstore at one point. Train Dreams seemed like it was from a different writer, didn't know he had those historical chops. Weird that it was originally published in 2002 in the Paris Review but not put out in book form until 2012. Let me know what you think of Tree of Smoke

Oh shit you're right, It might have been a Paris Review issue I took. We used to get that and Granta. Oh man too many memories of roaming the library right now.

I met him, too, saw him read a couple times at Arizona State. Love Jesus' Son (esp "Emergency"!) and his poetry, esp The Incognito Lounge, and the novels, Already Dead and Tree of Smoke ... damn, man, he died too young! Sober, tho ...

Seemed like every reading he would choose "Emergency," would get the most reaction. Over time looked like he was getting more confident and theatrical in his readings, especially after he got into writing plays

PaperBird He and Norman Dubie, my mentor at ASU, were old friends, and that's how I met Denis. He was sober, by then.
