Im sitting here. I've been stuck in limbo since I graduated High School. I've been scared of where I want to go and what I want to do. I stumbled back upon this video and it's precursor. Some heartwarming rekindling feeling has filled my heart and suddenly I have memories rushing back of 1st, 2nd, 3rd grade me and my love for science. Rushing into the Discovery store at the mall in Seattle, begging my parents to buy ___ book or ____ toy. I've been scared of where I want to go and what I want to do. Explored advertising, journalism, just about everything. I had lost sight of the basic love I had. Somehow these videos brought that rushing back to me. A wave of such strong emotions I haven't felt in a long time has me typing this as i'm crying at 1 in the morning. Thank you Neil for reminding me of my childhood dreams.
Dream big and work hard my little Cozyland. Never give up in whatever you choose :). How are you? How is life for you now that I am replying 5 years later :)
I will not lie... I cried listening to this! A world that has lost its way and a country that has lost its spirit... You can hear the passion, the frustration *and* the despair in his voice.
Same here. Too many people out there with the 'why waste money in space when we have so many problems on Earth' mentality. We should be on Mars by now.
The world needs more teachers like NDT. Not just at the college level but more importantly at the elementary. We need believers in exploration. If a child could draw the same inspiration from looking up at the cosmos as they do by watching grown men play with balls as a profession this world would be a better place. CC!
One of the most beautiful videos I've seen. It seems to me, people who appreciate the study and exploration of space have a deeper appreciation for the planet Earth than others seem to realize or understand. Always enriching and enlightening to see the bigger picture. Thank you for bringing Neil deGrasse Tyson's words to life in such a meaningful way!
MrVeggie247 thank you for posting that. everyone needs to know what libertarians truly believe. (getting rid of social security, public school, medicaire, the EPA, even the postal service and public libraries.. they just get young ppl with the 'legal weed' thing)
kurčina Neil is a science educator - that's what he does. he educates. if you don't like 'how' he does that, then that's your opinion. You're entitled to it.
He has done quite a bit of his own stuff, however he is the definition of inspiration. Without people like Neil we wouldn't have the mass of people we do working in STEM. Neil inspires, he heards the crowds to understand there is so much more to life than social life.
well, yes the passive aggressiveness is sometimes annoying if you are sensitive to it; but in the US this is maybe needed with the common mindset of the same behaviour - i honestly don't care too much how arrogant or rude he was if he could get more potentially ignorant people into caring for things and develop more curiosity in science or other fields
I love this video because he isn't talking about strictly exploring space and going to new planets, but how NASA and space exploration progresses man kind and technology on earth!
Nothing special about Carl Sagan. There are and have always been brilliant scientists and educators. Fame does not equal "more qualified" to educate. Yes - Neil does his important part. But, so do millions of others who are NOT famous.
Right. Let's take this challenge to change this world in a century. We are the new generation let's do it . We can do it and more importantly we have done it before .
These videos make me tear up every time I watch them. This man is truly awesome. Such a visionary and communicator. I wish more people were like him, especially those who run our country....
I haven't stopped dreaming and I feel like I'm not alone when I read this comments of you folks. Carl Sagan would be so proud of what Neil has become. He's not only a great astrophysicist, he's also a great educator and - even more - one of our best human beeings on this planet of ours.
Dr Tyson, you have a voice and you have an obligation to all of us who actually hear you and actually care to be even more vocal, even more in the face of politicians, even more in the face of a public seemingly more interested in watching TV and playing games on facebook. The rest of us will do what we can in support, but you are the general leading the charge. Go for it!
Dr. Tyson is a very philosophical man along with being a scientist. Very inspiring. We all understand english, (judging by the comments) but why can we not seem to understand the ideas like this. Does it really take a doctor?
COSMOS IS THE BEST!!! Sagan is elated and jumping in his grave, yelling YES, YES, YES for Neil's work in this new version of Carl's own show of years gone by . Adding to the appeal of Neil's new "COSMOS" is the graphic animation by a great saterist, Seth McFarline. Congrats and Thanks for a job well done!
I have always had a strange curiosity, always checkout out eyewitness books in elementary school on library days while other kids checkout magic tree house and Goosebumps
It's funny, because I can remember looking at books about albert einstein and the space shuttle. Once I was with my mom at a bookstore and you would expect a 8 year old to pick up a short story book, but instead I picked up one about the solar system.
It's frustrating because these are the videos that have to go viral on social media but hardly ever do... Also, Evan Schurr, you have to make Episode 3! Or have someone else do or help with it.
I come back to this video every now and then, since discovering it nearly ten years ago. Still brings a tear to my eye. Everyone is caught up in political issues down here on the surface, when we should look to our future in the stars. Niel, your words have not gone unheard. There's still some of us in the younger generation that also longs for the vision you seek. You are an inspiration. You always have been. Please know that. The odds may be against us more than ever before, but as long as there is a future to fight for, we may as well try. ❤️🩹
applepie231 The scary part is Cruz's religious views would probably see NASA as a horrific idea such as the universe belongs to god and not humans for example or would likely favor that NASA be abolished due to conflicting against what ever faith he believes in or pressure from his party. Cruz would destroy free thought and imagination.
+eaglerocks123 personally I dislike Cruz for many reasons. However, he actually is part of the committee that oversees NASA, and is very supportive of the program. I believe even advocates for increased spending for it. Goes against conventional beliefs and expectations for him. If such a budget hawk believes in the program though and doesn't advocate cutting it... Maybe we can find more consensus on increased spending for it. There's little ROI for business to venture out beyond LEO so I think he actually recognizes that.
Dr. Tyson is an inspiring speaker and thought leader. His inspiration does not just apply to space & science, but to the simplest of businesses. If small and mid-sized manufacturing business "dreamed big", most of its employees could retire with a very nice nest egg. All the leaders have to do is dream big enough and lead properly.
These videos honestly make me cry! They give me hope that through activism we might actually one day be able to experience what our grandparents did in the 60's. I am only 16 and my biggest desire is the resurrection of our great want to explore the unknown. Thank you Neil and the people at the penny org!
I cannot stop watching this video! It may be about the dire situation of our space program, but the words are put together so passionately that it makes the entire video just beautiful and inspiring in its own way.
Maybe we should have a national telethon on tv the internet and any other media outlets to make the country aware of all this. People could call in to show their surpport and at the same time make the goverment look like idiots and the people refuse to stop dreaming.
I have a undying interest in space, Astronomy. Ever since around Middle School I had chosen that I wanted to study space in some way. This. This just heightens my interest, my inspiration in becoming an astronomer. There is more than most know to the study of space, and I hope more people can come to see that.
It's interesting.. ever since I saw this two-part video along with the 9-year old boy discussing the cosmos I have been sharing these three vids on facebook about every 3 months. Out of the hundreds of friends that I have there only 4 watched and replied. THAT'S what's wrong with everyone. No one gets that this has been and always will be the answer to an economically secure America again. The trickle down effect even reaches the lower class. Oops. Gotta go now. Lady Gaga's performing on MTV tonight. Pfft.
I share this once in a while as well. I find these two videos (This and the episode 1), to be some of the most important videos I've seen ever. Neil is one of my definite heroes. I think this particular video is by far the most important one though. The message is very true. And I have the same experience when I share this with friends - very few, if any, have anything to say about it. I'm not really sure how many even watch it. And I'm not even American. I'm Norwegian. And I don't even care that there's a difference, these videos and the message Mr. Tyson is trying to get across is equally important to every one of us regardless.
Gosh Dang it Niel. You are always getting me in the feels. And Gosh dang it Evan Schurr for your wonderful music and editing and footage selection choices :). These are really amazing Evan, I hope you always keep them up. From the comments they have done some good to inspire others and help others to see the purpose of space exploration.
They'll make a third video when we the people rise up! When we start investing into the future instead of pointless global policing with our massive military machine that gets funded more than the next ten military countries below it. All of which are our allies.
I cant help but break down in tears every second I watch this. A 5 minute clip just doesn't substantiate how important this message is.Spread this video as far as you can.
Well other countries are increasing funding for space exploration while America is not. He's pointing out that there's a specific problem with NASA not being funded
Nice, inspiring video. However, I think the final sentence "this is the future of America" in total contratiction with the whole video. Seriously, he speak about a world without border the whole time and he end his speech with a border... It mess up everything :/
I mean he had to conform to it. Throughout the video expressed his frustration with Nations at war and how they continuously argue over decade old issues. He wants the United States to see that if they do not do anything for NASA, our border will no longer be an example for the whole world and that we should strive for something better. He might be able to change the funding, but he won't change the idea of countries sadly so he had to finish off by saying that.
I need to make sure my sons (even though the younger is only 8 months) sees and hears this again and again over the years. They need to know life is not about commercialism and profit but dreams, ambitions, and discovery.
I agree that no single person can change the world but he can inspire others to be the change we need. He cares about the future of not just his country but the whole world. He has my support and more people should too.
As long as there are people who can think and dream, it'll never fade. Passing that legacy on to friends and family is whats important. Inspiring those people who can make the changes that we may not be able to right now.
Not just that but he brings back new ways of doing and making things, and his stories of adventure and bravery inspire the kids to do new exciting things too.
I showed this in a powerpoint to my Class who have recently started teaching physics again. . I am only 15 years old, and i got a A+ for the first time. This rebooted my dreams, thanks.
"Where do you even get that phrase from, NO ONE thought of that phrase before that photo was published." The way he says that is inspiring. His voice, his conviction on the matter, he is just the greatest. Pure and simple.
i keep coming everyday over and over and over you go mr.NDT i will in fact listen this million times so humanity doesn't look stupid totally and vid gets at least 2mln views
Awesome speech by Neil DeGrasse Tyson . You can hear the emotion in his pride for humanity . I agree , I've been watching and I do think were getting better . If you'll notice we've had back downs in all the last incidents of war . They're getting the message from the people , right here on RUclips . I feel exactly like Mr. Tyson , but we're still in that dream , today youth doesn't have the same excitement . And they're right to temper ours . But as Neil says , Don't stop learning , and the money spent on wars could give us lots of equipment . Maybe it's time to make cheaper ways of reaching orbit , after all when you've reached orbit that's all you need , you can assemble there and take off from there .
I agree with you. What a moving, heartfelt piece this is. Dr Neil is such an amazing speaker. Everyone on this planet should know who Dr Neil DeGrasse Tyson is, and listen to his inspirational speeches. He could be instrumental in making this world a better place. If enough people would listen...
That is part of his point. There is an entire generation that never looks up. Yes you can google a pic of anything, but to actually see it is a far more impressive experience. My job employs alot of highschool and college students and I amaze them all the time by just showing them what is around them. We have forgotten to look up. How much love has been lost because instead of looking around and seeing that cute girl flash you a pretty smile our faces are shoved in the screen of a phone?
You know, I could spend hours listening to him talk. There's something that separates him from the rest of us: his unalloyed passion. I only wish that I had half the energy, passion, and knowledge he does.
I had the pleasure of attending a speech. He also spoke at my College but I couldn't make that one. Point is, at the end it got dark, and he brought up "Earth Rise", quoted Sagan, and when the lights came on most were either crying or doing a bad job of holding it back. I am the last generation that NASA influenced. And what did it do to me? It made me study science. And they have shoved us all into a closet because they know scientists and science doesn't fit within their plan. If you encourage dreams, they cannot control where people take them. We literally have to explain why vaccines are important and that the Earth isn't flat because....because people stopped dreaming. And we have very little resources to educate them.
I remember when I sat in school and watched the landing on the moon, we were all breathless!! Big dreams in everyone around me dreaming to be an astronaut. Now I sit as a grandmother and wonder were have all the dreams in space travel gone? My little grandson will hear my words of how wonderful science is and how much time is being wasted.
Neil deGrasse Tyson is one of the most amazing and impressive people on this planet. He is not a national treasure but a treasure for the entire world and maybe even human history. I have never heard such inspiring words spoken with such conviction and passion. I wish a larger fraction of people would think remotely like he does, this world would be a much better place.
I turned 12 the year this video came out. When I watch this video, I think about what my mindset was at 11-12 years old. What I was doing. What I was worried about. And after watching this masterpiece, I can't believe I didn't have the mindset that have now, 5 years ago.
"We're still at war in Vietnam! There's still campus unrest! Yet we found the time to start thinking about Earth. That is space operating on our culture and you cannot even put a price on that." This is one of the best aspects of this video.
Neil was one of the motivators for me to takes this path. I hope in return this motivates another American that sees this to try and commit to this challenge like few Americans take on. I hope more young/old Americans unite, that the country come together, like fasces ( The Roman Symbol of a bundle of rods tied together), and take on the STEM challenges, and cultural challenges that the USA will face today, and in the future. We'll see. Sincerely, A Voice of the American Youth
We humans just want to enjoy life and make sure our future generations are helped by our footprint.... Our existence is beautiful as much as chaotic......Great video. can wait to flip this power pyramid.
That's great. Hopefully everyone can donate a little to such a great cause, but we need more than just money. We need support and people to spread the ideas expressed in this video. I hope you and everyone else who wants to see human progress on the frontier of space does so. We can and we will if we work together.
Hey Damon, Keep plugging away... I was accepted to a few Universities right out of High School but blew my GPA by going to a Community College and partying for 2 years. I knew I had dug myself a hole, owned up to it and wrote some pretty impressive essays to Universities... Eventually i decided to attend Santa Monica College (another community college) for 3 years for free and then easily transferred to UCLA for premed. Remember, where there is a will there is a way!
This all is about sooo much more than JUST Nasa, more than just science, this is truly about our future. This is about working together, and instead of picking up guns to kill each other, we NEED to pick up books to teach each other, children and adults alike.
"We went to the Moon.
And we discovered Earth."
Always sends chills down my spine.
Cant believe that quote has only 6 likes
Im sitting here. I've been stuck in limbo since I graduated High School. I've been scared of where I want to go and what I want to do. I stumbled back upon this video and it's precursor. +ALA A that also made me cry.
+ALA A same
we could have so much more
Same here. Too many people out there with the 'why waste money in space when we have so many problems on Earth' mentality. We should be on Mars by now.
I read this and I teared up a little.
"That is Space operating on our culture and you CAN NOT put a price on that." Respect.
Nathaniel DeNicola "Thinking about earth as whole. Not as a place where nations war! As whole!"
What a powerful speech. When we went to the moon, we discovered earth.

One of the smartest men alive. He is doing a great job filling in the void left behind by Carl.
Yes and great Title by the way. :)

NASA should be globally funded.
***** Problem of government funding still an issue.
I wonder if it can be crowd funded ?
Calvin George ya check out the lunar one mission they got 600,000 funded for a moon mission
Exile438 send me a link
VY CanisMajoris or have an International Space Exploration Fund (ISEF)
Space exploration is globally funded. A bankrupt US just isn't a big part of that anymore.
"That is space operating on our culture and you cannot even put a price on that" breaks me everytime I hear it..
And this is why Ted Cruz running for president FUCKING HORRIFIES ME.

Iván Rodríguez With a new perspective, it is up to us now to make part 3. So our children can tell it for us.
Andrew Velis Most wonderfully said.
I will be returning to running this channel on a regular basis within a couple weeks! It will be a bit different, but I hope you guys will like it.

Ya did good, Evan.
You helped us. Who knows what children will see this and it will set them on a path to also help us progress.
Get rid of NASA and form IASA.

Hm.. It needs to flow off the tongue a bit better...
GASA - Global Aeronautics and Space Administration
Gosh Dang it Niel. You are always getting me in the feels. And Gosh dang it Evan Schurr for your wonderful music and editing and footage selection choices :). These are really amazing Evan, I hope you always keep them up. From the comments they have done some good to inspire others and help others to see the purpose of space exploration.
Neil Tyson rocks my socks!
He put everything into such eloquent and passionate perspective
The last graphic made me sad
"we went to the moon.....and discovered earth." that literally made me smile. idk why i find that so powerful

this video is all about american and american politics...lol why would it be related to the world

Absolutely...
Satisfyingly enough it's quite easy to listen to him and he's just so damn reasonable... Who wouldn't really want what he's preaching?!
This planet that we all share. I get tears in my eyes from watching this.
The commentary for this video was inspirational and so moving. Please continue to make more!
"We went to the moon, and we discovered earth." Great quote Neil.
"Where do you even get that phrase from, NO ONE thought of that phrase before that photo was published." The way he says that is inspiring. His voice, his conviction on the matter, he is just the greatest. Pure and simple.
i keep coming everyday over and over and over you go mr.NDT
i will in fact listen this million times so humanity doesn't look stupid totally and vid gets at least 2mln views
I just stopped dreaming and started to act! Unite to build a better world.
This generation needs him. Inspire the next generation of Scientists, Technologist, Engineers and Mathematicians Neil!
Beautiful video. Thank you so much for this.
You words shake me with pride for Humanity! I will strive to be more like you, thanks for some of the few wise words present in todays society.
You know, I could spend hours listening to him talk. There's something that separates him from the rest of us: his unalloyed passion. I only wish that I had half the energy, passion, and knowledge he does.
Happy Earth day. I watch this video when I try to inspire myself, and today is a good day for it. It's like chugging caffeine, but much more potent.
These are makin me shed a tear.. Damn you Neil!! Stop being so awe inspiring!!!
I think I could watch this video every morning and feel motivated for the day
I never thought I'd want to re-watch this. Five times.
Truly astounding stuff, no matter how many times I've watched this.
I think I'm obsessed with this video. I've watched it like 6 or 7 times in the last day.
The passion in Neil's voice at 3:41 - 4:00... it gets me every time
Neil deGrasse Tyson is one of the most amazing and impressive people on this planet. He is not a national treasure but a treasure for the entire world and maybe even human history. I have never heard such inspiring words spoken with such conviction and passion. I wish a larger fraction of people would think remotely like he does, this world would be a much better place.
No words come to mind to describe this. Both videos give me chills
I turned 12 the year this video came out. When I watch this video, I think about what my mindset was at 11-12 years old. What I was doing. What I was worried about. And after watching this masterpiece, I can't believe I didn't have the mindset that have now, 5 years ago.
Notice how the comments section for these videos are filled with intelligent, articulated and sometimes poetic comments. Good work guys
"We're still at war in Vietnam! There's still campus unrest! Yet we found the time to start thinking about Earth. That is space operating on our culture and you cannot even put a price on that."
This is one of the best aspects of this video.
Just wow. What a great speech.
We'll see.
Sincerely,
A Voice of the American Youth
I so adore Neil. It left me breathless. He's so right.
We humans just want to enjoy life and make sure our future generations are helped by our footprint.... Our existence is beautiful as much as chaotic......Great video. can wait to flip this power pyramid.
LOVE THIS. You go Dr Tyson.
Great editing. Great project. Keep it up!
That's great. Hopefully everyone can donate a little to such a great cause, but we need more than just money. We need support and people to spread the ideas expressed in this video. I hope you and everyone else who wants to see human progress on the frontier of space does so. We can and we will if we work together.
Finally. This music doesn't drown out the overall message.
I appreciate the passion of Neil Degrasse Tyson...and Dreaming! I would love to be able to vote on "penny for Nasa"!
Still get chills watching this
One of the few videos that have ever made me cry
We do have new heroes Mr. Tyson, you are one of them...
I feel like this should be more popular than episode one because everyone always says "what's the point of space and nasa?"
A thousand times yes. Sometimes the internet finds you people who dream like you do.
This gave me so many chills....so inspiring.
Hey Damon,
Keep plugging away...
I've seen the speech he gave, but the music and pictures makes it hit that much harder!
