Indeed! Smoking isn't the only poison and carcinogenic substance in our environment. The worst aspect, in my mind, is that our society allows, nay, encourages new technologies without more than two seconds of thought about whether there might be negative consequences. More, we demand new technologies and take a Pollyanna approach that the chemical and technology must only provide human improvement. Name any technology and see that everyone was taught that only good outcomes will happen. E.g. the Internet will enhance democracy, when in fact many now think it might destroy have or even already has destroyed democracy. I am always shouting into the wind about the loss of community and the tremendous problems that it is creating. A few brave souls are pointing out the corruption in the world is surging into science. Anthropologists and neurologists say that humans lived for hundreds of thousands of years in tribes of no bigger than 150 people. The book "Behave, The Biology of Humans at Our Best and Worst", Robert M. Sapolsky talks about this. Chapter 12, page 430. Oh, boy. I'd better stop before it this turns into a book!
