The ruin looks beautiful. You guys did a wonderful job. You definately don't want to cover those stones up. I would just regrout and leave them naturally exposed.

Lime pointing will be a huge task but it will be well worth it. Great work you are both doing. Lovely to see these houses (of which there are so many in Portugal) being saved and lived in.
I think it would be worth paying a hydrologist or local council expert to advise on the water table etc and what drainage you need to consider externally. Otherwise it is a lot of work that could be ruined. Maybe take the floor down and observe the interior over a year to see what it is like through call the seasons ?
I think lime rendered inside as in winter it gets damp in the house and this will be absorbed by the walls but if you have wood burning fireplace it will be kept dry. Outside you could render but add a waterproof element so that water doesn’t get in. Also as it’s on a sloping land, you might later on do a franchise drain around the house😊.
@@destino2portugal I would advise against the cement. Doesn't go well in the mix. For a concrete pad inside for the floor, sure, but not on the walls. It retains moisture. Lime comes in many different varieties, and you'll positively be able to find a match for the jobs needed to get the walls how you want them, whether regular or hydraulic.

Good job guys!!! Cleaning off the old render makes a huge difference. My concern with Lime pointing is that the house has so many small stones and gaps that the house would look 1/2 rendered by the time you got done. I think I would do a 3'X3' test doing lime pointing to see if you like it if not you can just render over it. If they would just build there houses with 2 to 3' over hangs on the roofing it would help a lot with the lime pointing drawing in so much moisture. Would recommend a quick pressure washing to remove as much dirt that they used as mortar as it draws even more moisture then lime will. If the test works out I would do the pointing as it would make the house stand out but besides you guys and people staying there who would see it being on the street that you are on. Also you said you would ware your safety glasses doing that type of work ;-)

Love you brother, thank you, yes, its getting pointed ;) We will enjoy the sun and the rain and whatever else is thrown at us as we are in the motherland
It might be worth you looking at Nicky from Project Portugal as I seem to remember he was talking about the different types cement or lime choices. In one of his vlogs. Of course you may have already know them.
Hey Nick.... the smell might do well with good shot of baking soda to start with. Then there is an enzyme that is non toxic and will neutralize the animal odouurs, your local vet either there or in the UK would likely know. The product is known as “Natures Miracle” in the US and is a sprayed on liquid application. Sarah... the proper way to enter and leave a hammock is from the high side, sit in the middle then turn lengthwise......! Loving watching the two of you play!
Lime Pointing will look beautiful and be stunning, on the other hand, rendered and painted will give ultimate protection with those crazy rainy days, 🙂 looks beautiful , I think overall I love the pointing as you have the wall opposite with exposed stonework, which gives you that feel of the traditional build and character. 🙏🏾
Thanks Charlie, i thought i had replied to this, i guess not... Yes, your vote counts here and its looking like lime pointing wins this election! Hope all is well with you amigo
1 vote for lime pointing it will make the rock walls pop. This is going to look wonderful it is probably more expense and time but will be worth it. Lana Australia
You guys are doing an awesome job...I really enjoyed and laughed when Sarah was trying to get into the cot..I could imagine trying to get in there and flipping over which I have seen before..but she did it....lol..keep up the good work..by the way pointing is awesome to look at and alot of hard work...look at indie portugal homestead...they redid there barn into a house and did alot of pointing and inside lime rendering and you have to make sure its dry...keep up the great channel.
Only my aesthetic speaking here, I love rocks and being around them, like I do trees. They're beauty and age shows with pointing. Then, what is the most practical for keeping it dry inside? A dilemma for me as well, I'm sure it will look lovely whatever you decide. Enjoy! Cheers! : )
If we point the outside and tank the inside it will be dry and beautiful, best of both worlds. Thanks for commenting and supporting the channel, it's appreciated ❤️💛💚
Well done for getting the ugly render off.Lime plaster would be my choice and tanking inside, as you have a lot of earth against outside wall which would have some dampness against the wall anyway.Upstairs may be less affected and stone wall inside may be nice...but I am not expert..Great work anyhow.
Great advice and thanks for taking the time to comment. We agree on the house being subterranean, much water but also insulated and cool in the summer so best of all worlds. Thanks for commenting and supporting the channel it's appreciated ☺️
Awesome video ‼️. Once you started revealing the beautiful rocks on the facade of the ruin I thought immediately I hope they lime point that building ❣️ it would definitely be a pure work of art when complete.
Do a test area of a unique pointing mix. 3 parts sand, 1 part type "s" masonry mortar cement [or"n"], water and glug, glug, of acrylic admixture ]more commonly used to stick tile work with thin set mortar]. Clean any smears quickly because it will stick, beleive me.. This gives a waterproof pointing mix to rid youself of that constant damp feel and provide a nice look at the same time. The acrylic admixture gives the mortar a nice workable feel and a good consistent look. You could even use a coloring agent in the mortar if something unique is desired. Waterproof the outside with this mix gives the freedom to use traditional lime mortar for inside pointing to highlight the stone or the same modern portland cement based type "s" poining mix with admixture and colour[if desired] as used on the outside. Snug as a bug and DRY on the inside. The acrylic admixture is a variant of white carpenters glue, so not toxic or anything.
For extra strength 3 parts sand, i part masonry cement [brick mix] and half a shovel normal portland cement. water and acrylic admixture and colour if desired.
Love your vids. Always fun. Watch and contact Nick and Andrea( Project Portugal vlogs) regarding whether to lime or cement point outside. He’s very knowledgeable, worked in the trade, and doesn’t agree on lime pointing the outside ( yes on the inside if I recall) because of the moisture draw. Lives and renovated his home in central Portugal so worth checking out as it looks great.
Revealing the beautiful face of the building, I would point it, Portuguese knew how to place stone to make it look good. Lime mortar, local course sand with some local rab mixed in. You saw how beautiful it can be with the properties your toured. Cornish and Devon cottages are often half rendered which can look good, the rendering on the prevailing weather side and the lower wall section in the splash zone. You got your work cut out stopping water at the back of the building, good luck with that. Upstairs view to the wider landscape would suggest to me that the day living space is best located upstairs with access straight onto the garden. Is that your plan?
That is exactly the plan Noddy, a terrace on two sides with inside outside living and two bedrooms downstairs. I love hard work, keeps the voices in my head quiet :) Thanks mate for commenting and supporting the channel

I think it would be better to point it. It would be very effective and beautiful. Can't wait to see end result. The cats are so cute. The Heavenly furry angels have sent them. 😸😸😸💐🍬🐦🐦 Happy Easter guys.
Aww Lesley, we've just seen this, thank you! The neighbours bought us cake and chocolate, it was lovely thank you. The cats are nice and get more comfortable with us every day ❤️💛💚
Another enjoyable vlog, from you guys, looking forward to seeing the end result. The pointing would look very nice, but render and paint would also look nice, but would be more weather proof. So for me render and paint. Love the hammock. Take care and see you both next time. x
Hi Nick and Sarah! Another lovely video - love the hat too by the way Nick - no! Not the sunhat!🤣🤣 Best advice I've ever been given on buildings like these, is stick to the original material selection. Old and modern ways mostly clash, because tolerances, tightness, strength etc. change. This means Portland cement is a big nono on such a building (what's there needs to go), as it does expand and contract ever so slightly with temperatures, seasons, humidity etc, but mostly simply by drying out and hardening. The ultrafine hairline cracks in the cement render will let moisture in, but not back out again, which will then ultimately ruin the walls, so please please please stick with the old naturals as lime, sand, clay, stone, wood, in anything in direct contact with the old structure. It will give a much sounder structure. Same goes for paint. please stay away from latex. limewash would be the right way to keep the wall fresh, breathable and sparkly white. Besides, no paint will ever be able to reflect the sunlight, the way lime does. It will need maintenance, but done right from the start, it's no worse than anything else. As for pointing or render, they each have their fortes and charm, and I'm as hard pressed to pick as you are. A combination of the two would also be possible. You might want to inspect the stonework a little closer. If some very porous stones have been used, you might want to shield them from the elements with render, but obviously it's of much lesser consequence where you are, than up here in the damp and frosty north. When in time you get to the roof, please consider eaves/overhang, as it's the best and cheapest way of looking after your house and money. Neither sun nor rain will get a chance to hammer away on the faces of the building, as if you hadn't done it. Of course done in such a way that it still looks Portuguese, and doesn't loose its architectural value. Cheers from Denmark to the both of you - love to see how you get on.
Thanks Martin, apologies for late reply, its been a mad busy time here. We think we are going with lime pointing, i have no problem with Cementous products, i have used them very successfully my entire life, we are picking lime pointing for the aesthetics only, no other reason, it is a little more flexible but not a great deal. Thanks for sharing your perspective and ideas, its appreciated and your vote counts here
@@destino2portugal That is quite alright. I appreciate both you taking the time to answer, as well as considering suggestions. The thing is... I have transitioned from standard construction and into restoration. I unfortunately sound like an aggravated smoker gone cold turkey at times, because I now have insights in both worlds. My sincere apologies! ...and there is a difference. Much greater than at first glance. Even though just a shed, what's left standing from times past, has, for obvious reasons, since it's still here, been built for centuries... Which is one thing. Another thing is the materials hygroscopic properties. They naturally lend themselves to a better indoor climate, than modern materials, maybe with oil derivatives in different shapes and forms, like foam, latex paint, glues etc.. I appreciate you wanting to keep material thickness down, as not to obstruct the building elements and maximize room. There are always different ways about things... I probably would have chosen something other than the foam/EPS for ceiling insulation, but have no idea what is available to you, what's legal, how much of a difference it will make in the Portuguese climate etc., but the best of luck to the both of you in your endeavors. I'm sure you'll get to realize a dream right there in your wonderful spot! 😊👍 ...will be keeping an eye out for more vids!
Great, work, Sarah & Nick! Glad you're taking a quiet break for the holiday. Hammock Time! Hopefully, it'll be most reenergizing before you get back to busting bedrock. The house really is far more beautiful now. I can see how you're of two minds re render:lime pointing. Maybe rendering 3 of the walls and pointing the most visible & admired wall? Just as another viewer commented, I like the idea of rendering for keeping moisture out and also perhaps being easier to do? especially if the condition of those beautiful honey-colored stones are prone to any crumbling and rendering would reinforce them? Whatever you choose i'm sure will be very appealing and practical👍🏼. 💗
Well done looks beautiful…I don’t know if you know about The Indie Project, with Theo and Bea…but check out their place Theo lime pointed their home and it’s beautiful! I think lime pointing will bring it back to how it was in its Glory days!
Hazel ☘️ … Lovely wee house … A lot of work to lime point it … but I’d lime point it if it looks good all over … if not you could just lime point the front and render and paint the rest, leaving stone accents around windows / doors ? 🙏☘️😘
It seems most people here have voted for pointing. Interesting discussion on damp. Can’t wait to see what you decide on and how you will tackle the damp concerns. The stones look great. Leaving them exposed, in some parts if not all, would make a nice feature. All the best.
Looking great guys!. if you rendered the top half, you wouldn't have to touch the door lintel, and point the lower level. me personally would render the whole thing, due to extreme temp changes, all the expansion and contraction, the more joints the more chances of water creeping in!..but like i said thats just my opinion. god job guys keep it up.
Thanks Aiden for your suggestion and vote, I think the pointing has won the vote, we also asked the village and they want it pointed too, so in the name of community it's going to be lime pointing 💚💛❤️
Nevermind about the question with neighbours. In small villages in Portugal you soon will find a mix of friendship and distruss. It will change as time goes by and they start to meet you better (and asking about your lifes too 😂). About the walls. Painting after achieving to see the hidden stone that were there makes no scence to me.
You are right Joao, hiding the stones would be criminal. As for neighbours, we take people as we find them and forgive humans for their shortcomings, we all have them and can all be nao bom. Thanks for your comment, suggestion and support amigo 💚💛❤️
I think pointing would further enhance the beauty in what is already a beautiful building .I am so happy to have you guys back .I did miss the channel .It’s great to see more of Sarah. Has your sister managed to purchase a property yet .Take care x
Aww thanks Andrea, yes its going to get pointed, your vote is logged and counted with the millions of other votes for Lime pointing :) We have just filmed the follow up video with my sister, that may be a clue.... Thank you for kind words, supporting us from the start and always taking time to comment
I had an inspiration when I saw the door at the side of the house on the hill. How would you like the idea to create a horizontal-made little path straight on from the sidedoor and then to get up on the hill little stairs to the left? So you could walk straight on easily from the sidedoor and also a nice little structure would be created into the hill with the stairs made by natural stones. ✨
First you instal drainage on the hillside walls of the house yes all 3 of them. And put some sort of hydro insulation on those sides. Then figure out what is the health of the walls. If they are ok regarding load/bearing capacity then put a roof on it immediately. If not then reinforce the walls and especially the corners and then put the roof on. From a practical perspective I would render the exterior of the walls and point out the interior of the walls. And from an architectural standpoint it appears to me that this building was a pig/donkey stay with the hay stack/barn on the first floor.
Great progress Sarah and Nick. It would lovely pointed but I guess it will come down to the cost, time and what you feel comfortable doing. I think it will be a really nice cottage when finished, you might be tempted to move into it yourself.
Hello Hello Happy Easter. I think you funny. You said that the ruin smell bad and then Sarah seats on the door reading a book haha She doesn't mind the smell. Maybe is only you haha . Anyway. You say your neighbour maybe didn't understand what you said. If I give you my phone number you could ring me (at anytime) if you in trouble and need some quick translation Free of charge haha Let me know. Keep the good work and can't wait for next video. Adeus

@@destino2portugal haha. Maybe you're right but I think the real fun part, for me is slowly seeing the stone works coming out. It will be a tedious chore but I think it would be therapeutic for me. Looking forward to it. Thank you for your time in responding to my, seemingly weird questions.
I would look at a stite like English heritage for official tech guidance because insulation internally would make a world of difference to the comfort of the occupants. My initial thoughts are lime pointing externally to highlight the stone and seal it from water ingress then a metal frame internally with vapour barrier, insulation, and a plasterboard finish. However I no little about hot countries with cold winters.
The house will be insulated everywhere Andy, every single direction! We will use MF for the studwork minimising the chance of insect damage and we are thinking now of lime pointing the front and rendering the sides and back....
@@destino2portugal Lime pointing the front and rendering the other exterior walls sounds good. Will the metal framing also sustain first floor? Just asking because the logs looks to be in bad conditions.
@@destino2portugal generally metal frames are not designed to be load bearing more than is needed to be a dividing wall. Load bearing metal walls exist but need to be designed either by the suppliers or a structural engineer.

It is going to be pointed Barbara, your vote is registered and counted
I was watching you take down the trees and bramble and your visit to the builder's supply, can I suggest you buy an axe.
It is on the list now Carole 💚💛❤️
Wonderful result ✨🍀
Thanks Judith ❤️💛💚
Lime pointed stone makes a good work of art and you've already transformed the exterior just by removing the render!
It's remarkable eh Donna! 100 years of grot removed and she looks beautiful, my fair lady 💚💛❤️
Brush the stone, and lime pointed ! It will be beautiful !
OK Antonio, we hear you amigo
It might be worth you looking at Nicky from Project Portugal as I seem to remember he was talking about the different types cement or lime choices. In one of his vlogs.
Of course you may have already know them.
I watched that vlog and i am also aware of the different choices, pros and cons
Vote logged and you are on the winning team
You guys are doing an awesome job...I really enjoyed and laughed when Sarah was trying to get into the cot..I could imagine trying to get in there and flipping over which I have seen before..but she did it....lol..keep up the good work..by the way pointing is awesome to look at and alot of hard work...look at indie portugal homestead...they redid there barn into a house and did alot of pointing and inside lime rendering and you have to make sure its dry...keep up the great channel.
Thank you Denis, will do amigo ❤️💛💚
Only my aesthetic speaking here, I love rocks and being around them, like I do trees. They're beauty and age shows with pointing. Then, what is the most practical for keeping it dry inside? A dilemma for me as well, I'm sure it will look lovely whatever you decide. Enjoy! Cheers! : )
If we point the outside and tank the inside it will be dry and beautiful, best of both worlds.
Thanks for commenting and supporting the channel, it's appreciated ❤️💛💚
Lime pointing will make it beautiful !
Thanks Emmanuelle, that has won the day amigo
You have uncovered some beautiful stonework, personally I would point it and leave the beautiful stones exposed xx
Thanks Louise, the votes cast are heavily pointing in that direction...
I shall get my coat! Thanks for commenting and supporting our little channel
@@destino2portugal I’ve just subscribed to your brother in-laws channel this morning x
Hi Guys; great job. What you need is a ride-on mower with trailer that you can back into the dwelling, thus releaving some on the back breaking work.
Haha, watch this space 😂 we can't afford to buy one but we can ask friends for help 😉
Thanks for commenting and supporting the channel it's appreciated ☺️
my vote is for Lime point the exterior, render and paint the interior
Your vote counts Paul, bigly 😉
To Point!!!
....we will handle the damp inside later
This, all of this !
Awesome video ‼️. Once you started revealing the beautiful rocks on the facade of the ruin I thought immediately I hope they lime point that building ❣️ it would definitely be a pure work of art when complete.
Thank you Ronna for your kind words and yes, its getting lime pointed on every side
Looks beautiful will look lovely pointed and im sure it will stand proud when its all finished he makes a good job of everything he does
Thank you Patricia, thats very kind of you to say
For extra strength 3 parts sand, i part masonry cement [brick mix] and half a shovel normal portland cement. water and acrylic admixture and colour if desired.
are you talking about SBR? i think you are, its been a pain to find here as its not called SBR, obviously :)
Thanks Maeve 💛❤️💚
I love hard work, keeps the voices in my head quiet :)

Take care and see you both next time. x
Thanks Susan, watch this space...
Hi Nick and Sarah! Another lovely video - love the hat too by the way Nick - no! Not the sunhat!🤣🤣
Best advice I've ever been given on buildings like these, is stick to the original material selection.
Lime any day . Stays true to the original look. Breathable unlike cement.
That's what we are going to do 👌
@@destino2portugal wow
Both! Parge or render then paint some and tuck point the remainder especially the corners.
Tuck pointing, a man who knows his stuff, muito bom Douglas 👌
That is EXACTLY what we decided last night Ruth, we are on the same wavelength ❤️💛💚
Well done looks beautiful…I don’t know if you know about The Indie Project, with Theo and Bea…but check out their place Theo lime pointed their home and it’s beautiful! I think lime pointing will bring it back to how it was in its Glory days!
Thanks Trudy, i am aware of them yes
Hazel ☘️ …
Lovely wee house
… A lot of work to lime point it … but I’d lime point it if it looks good all over
… if not you could just lime point the front and render and paint the rest, leaving stone accents around windows / doors ?
🙏☘️😘
Hello Hazel, this was exactly what i suggested but i was overruled :)
It is getting pointed all four sides now
Pointing definitely, I think it has to be as it would be criminal to hide those huge great Rocks behind render.... But then what do I know!!! 👍👍
Your opinion is as valid as everyone else's 💚💛❤️
lovely work, those exposed stones look so cool, I think it would look great pointed but it will be beautiful regardless of what you do. Cheers
Thank you Ryan 😊
It seems most people here have voted for pointing. Interesting discussion on damp. Can’t wait to see what you decide on and how you will tackle the damp concerns. The stones look great. Leaving them exposed, in some parts if not all, would make a nice feature. All the best.
I am a democratic man and the people have spoken, its pointing time! Thanks Pat for always supporting our little channel
Great job guys ...still laughing about the hammock, I honestly thought Sarah was going to come out the other side 😅 xx
Would have made great content 😃💚💛❤️
Aww thanks Andrea, yes its going to get pointed, your vote is logged and counted with the millions of other votes for Lime pointing :)
We have just filmed the follow up video with my sister, that may be a clue....
Thank you for kind words, supporting us from the start and always taking time to comment
We found your channel by accident and are hooked… we are doing something similar in Madeira. We love your channel and can’t wait for the next update😊
Amazing, thanks Brett. We are planning a trip down to Madeira, maybe we can come visit and break bread with you guys...
We think we know what you mean, we are going to have a path from the parking spot at the top to the side door Judith, is that what you mean?
Yes 💖 and maybe some stonestairs into the hillside to get up
@@judithgrote8794 they're in the pipeline Judith, watch this space 💚❤️💛🇵🇹
It will be very cute after it done 🙌
We think it's going to be a stunner 💚❤️💛🇵🇹
First you instal drainage on the hillside walls of the house yes all 3 of them. And put some sort of hydro insulation on those sides. Then figure out what is the health of the walls. If they are ok regarding load/bearing capacity then put a roof on it immediately. If not then reinforce the walls and especially the corners and then put the roof on. From a practical perspective I would render the exterior of the walls and point out the interior of the walls.
And from an architectural standpoint it appears to me that this building was a pig/donkey stay with the hay stack/barn on the first floor.
Muito obrigado amigo ❤️💛💚
Hi looks slot better already be very nice when done I would like render the walls will look lovely
Thank you Janine, watch this space 💚💛❤️
Great progress Sarah and Nick. It would lovely pointed but I guess it will come down to the cost, time and what you feel comfortable doing. I think it will be a really nice cottage when finished, you might be tempted to move into it yourself.
It has been discussed...
Pointing is winning the vote 💯
It helps to be high in a high hammock🤠👍
Hello Hello Happy Easter. I think you funny. You said that the ruin smell bad and then Sarah seats on the door reading a book haha She doesn't mind the smell. Maybe is only you haha . Anyway. You say your neighbour maybe didn't understand what you said. If I give you my phone number you could ring me (at anytime) if you in trouble and need some quick translation Free of charge haha Let me know. Keep the good work and can't wait for next video. Adeus
GOOD iDEA ! maybe you could give a few lessons of Portuguese language too!
Thanks Mario
Glad see ya'll back. Love that you are fixing up the ruin. You were talking about pointing the outside, there is a utube channel Project Portugal, check them. He does beautiful work on their house. They are from Cornwall.
Thanks Joy, I am pretty sure Nick from the channel would be horrified by me suggesting lime pointing :) He is not keen.
Thanks for commenting and supporting our little channel
I suppose the better question is, is it as easy (and fun)as it looks like to me? Thanks.
It's fun for an hour 🙂 then it becomes a chore
@@destino2portugal haha. Maybe you're right but I think the real fun part, for me is slowly seeing the stone works coming out. It will be a tedious chore but I think it would be therapeutic for me. Looking forward to it. Thank you for your time in responding to my, seemingly weird questions.
@@destino2portugal BTW, please be sure that you would be able to record the "liming", is that what it is called? Thanks again.
Render but either way you are doing a great job😍📷
Muito obrigado ☺️❤️💛💚
