just as a personal bug bear ... polymeter not polyrhythm. Everything is running from the same master clock with different step lengths, that means the patterns are polymetric, not polyrhythmic. Adam Neely has a great video on this, I might have to make one too. More importantly for this video though ... I have a SQUID here and it's been good fun for getting things going quickly and easily so far.
I like this but i'm also super annoyed at Pioneer DJ. Many of these features have been requested for the SP-16. The MIDI polyphony, the arp modes, "Rhythmic Control" type features... They took all of suggestions and turned it into a new product! SP-16 has 4 note polyphony for MIDI but those notes have to be set beforehand in a chord or adjusted on the step sequencer. On SP-16 there is Note Repeat with different speeds but no _real_ Arp which is baffling because there is a latch. I love my Toraiz SP-16. It's the best Sampler Workstation/synth i've ever used. But it needs *these* updates!
I was expecting it to be close to twice as much; I'm very interested in seeing how much one can manipulate notes in realtime while still keeping them in their musical context. I also don't remember hearing much about LFO's and CC's so I hope they have that covered. Not bad!
@@TheSynthZone That does the whole of an instrument's sequence though right? It's like it's still on a rigid grid but it de-syncs with what else is playing. That's really cool but what I mean is unquentizing; it'd be good if their was a way to randomly unquentize sequences just a smidge to take it off the grid a bit on a per note basis.
@@dcashley303 For a lot of control I go with my trusty yamaha rmx1 or even better my old roland mc50 mk2, it can tweak stuff in a major way. I like the way this machine will allow us to do berlin style work or trance-techno with easy acess to pre-programmed drum machine or other sequenced material ooopps i mean it works for my purposes. = )
People do the same "groove" control with a midi keyboard's modwheel mapped to some timing parameters. What use is this when it can't be altered after the fact with any accuracy. Impossible to get a nice lock with anything swung outside of the timing of this device where as with a laptop it is possible to match those timings to external sources even if the playhead speed is modulated.
Sure would be nice to be able to just record an arbitrary length of notes as a melody/chords using a midi controller. But I guess this is just for techno.
They are velocity sensitive and I imagine they have the capability to send AT as well but there's no mention of it. I know the SP-16 pads can do AT, they just have never bothered to turn it on.
Make a darn performance mixer to plug all this gear into! It should be simple if this is coming from Pioneer. Make it 16 channels to match your Squid box.
So frustrating that it is limited to 64 steps per pattern. Why is this limitation so annoyingly omnipresent in hardware sequencers? Really hope they can update it to be able to write longer patterns, i'd buy it then.
mojo drum it’s a MIDI sequencer not a musical instrument therefore it doesn’t make any sounds itself, it just sends MIDI or CV information to other musical instruments
It's you that misunderstands the purpose of these devices, rather than the manufacturer misunderstanding the consumer. If you want a full song arrangement mode, just compose in your daw, hit play, and stand back to play your guitar parts as the full arrangement runs. There are plenty of midi interfaces and midi to cv converters to use with your daw if you want to do arrange using external gear.
@@crolodon8024well, that was needlessly condescending and oddly prescriptive about how I should compose my music. I've been making electronic music live and in the studio for 20 years, and I've always done so with hardware sequencers, not DAWs. When a new sequencer, groovebox, or sampling workstation comes out without an arranger or song mode, there is always a contingent that sees it as a missed opportunity. This happened when Korg inexplicably omitted song mode from the new Electribes after having it in every previous generation. This happened when Elektron didn't include song mode in the Digitone and Digitakt, keeping this easily implementable feature for its higher end products only. I'll be fine sticking with the Octatracks, Deluges, and MPC Lives of the world. I only use a DAW for mixing and mastering, not for composing and performing, because I'm usually in a duo or band setting and have always been a hardware instrument guy. I thought the Squid was going to compete with the big boys, the most fully featured sequencers out there, but it only will if they add song mode.
Jonn Gauntletier You’re misunderstanding, I’m not saying you MUST use a daw for song mode, of course there are other options, just saying that the manufacturer of these devices without song mode designed them without a song mode or arrangement mode on purpose, it’s not like they forgot it. My Digitakt doesn’t need a song mode, I use it in a fluid and performative way with it which I know is what the manufacturer had in mind as they designed it. Different things for different purposes, every device doesn’t need to cater to every user or use case.
@@crolodon8024 Elektron omitted song mode from the Digitakt so it wouldn't compete with the Octatrack, and that was a shame really. Including song mode does not take away from the ability to use a device fluidly; it certainly doesn't for the Octatrack. It's just advanced pattern chaining. I totally agree that manufacturers can't (and shouldn't) address every use case, but song mode isn't a huge deviation and used to be expected on every drum machine and groove box. It's not like asking for more voices on a synth or stereo sampling on a mono device, or something unreasonable like that. There are at least 3 people commenting on this video that they are in disbelief that the Squid doesn't have a song mode, so it isn't a strange expectation. 😆Correct of course lol (theres always one😂)
I have been wanting somebody to make something like this for ages
i feel like they stole this design from my minds eye, and im not mad!!!

Before I watch the whole thing: Are there critical questions asked and answered regarding updates and product lifecycle of this thing?
It’s more advanced then I tought, and the price is ok. Great vid. 👍✌️greetz
I wanna see a video of Pioneer being asked about their absolutely terrible record on updates with regards to the sp-16/as-1.

No song mode?!
oh dear.....this looks rather good.....
Reminds me of that makenoise modular sequencer joint...ya know what I’m talkin
It obviously can run only one pattern for 24 minutes.
I think the Peak is in unison, so the chords bit didn't really work as intended
Cool idea, I wonder if it's easy to kick things slightly off the beat to give the sound a more human feel.
Yes, the slider can control the tempo of the various tracks faster and slower! It's labeled with slow and fast!

Rightous stuff! In half a year we will realize its here, in two all will want one! Uuu and normal price wow. Nice1!

Hands down, my fav in depth vid of this device. Thanks!!
Regardless of the long preface about Toraiz/Pioneer, when I googled it, all the results said Pioneer-Toraiz...

The MX-1 could do with some competition, it’s a fun mixer but there are limitations.
