THIS is the interpretation of "Widmung" I needed to hear. I actually heard Robert's voice speaking to Clara with ardent, intimate love. Ruckert's lyric poetry shines through to its fullest intent, with sincere passion, without a trace of "supplemental" histrionics. I'm thankful that we have Hermann Prey's artistry on which to look back, and better understand the Art of German Lieder.
How you could say "No" when your fiancee serenade you with this song? It is truly gorgeous, so expressive song with depth emotional and rich tones. Love it! I could imagine how Clara is truly infatuated by Robert Schumann.
I think he was one of the few singers who could sing anything, from Minnesang to opera buffa - what a wonderful and expressive singer, what gracious musicality he possessed...
Du meine Seele, du mein Herz, Du meine Wonn’, O du mein Schmerz, Du meine Welt, in der ich lebe, Mein Himmel du, darein ich schwebe, O du mein Grab, in das hinab Ich ewig meinen Kummer gab. Du bist die Ruh, du bist der Frieden, Du bist vom Himmel mir beschieden. Daß du mich liebst, macht mich mir wert, Dein Blick hat mich vor mir verklärt, Du hebst mich liebend über mich, Mein guter Geist, mein beßres Ich!
He was so beautiful, with that Puckish smile, those sparkling eyes, and his wonderful performing on stage--not just vocally. Loved him and love him still.
I am reading his autobiography "First Night Fever" gives a real flavour of the man... both he and Fischer-Dieskau were joyous human beings with that touch of God given electricity!
Singers with voices as rich as this are rarely successful with lieder but Prey manages to "read the text" on the music with great sincerity and conviction. Subtle and effective gradations of tone within a well-sustained overall mood.
Prey and Fischer-Dieskau are towering giants compared with anything since or around now. Whether they would have thrived in today's digital depleted music industry is another question.
You my soul, you my heart, You my rapture, O you my pain, You my world in which I live, My heaven you, to which I aspire, O you my grave, into which My grief forever I’ve consigned! You are repose, you are peace, You are bestowed on me from heaven. Your love for me gives me my worth, Your eyes transfigure me in mine, You raise me lovingly above myself, My guardian angel, my better self! Translations by Richard Stokes, author of The Book of Lieder (Faber, 2005)
What a beautiful voice and what sincere expression -- this is the perfect "Widmung" from the perfect lieder-singer. He was the complete package: golden voice, superb musicianship, unassuming performing style, and he looks like he could have been Ewan McGregor's father (that's a compliment).
Most baritones would take Schumann's "Widmung" down one or two semitones. Prey sings this song, beautifully and with enormous sensitivity to the text, in the original, high key of A-flat major. And to think that he excelled as the Mozart Figaro, a role with much of the bass in it, as well as Beckmesser, Wagner's highest baritone part.
One baritone who has recorded "Widmung" three semitones down is Thomas Quasthoff. But then, Quasthoff is just high enough to land in baritone territory. Prey was a middle-ground lyric baritone.
Daß du mich liebst, macht mich mir wert, Que me ames me hace digno de mi Dein Blick hat mich vor mir verklärt, Tu mirada me ha transfigurado ante mi Du hebst mich liebend über mich, Me amas por encima de mi Mein guter Geist, mein beßres Ich! ¡Mi buen espíritu, mi mejor yo! - - Du meine Seele, du mein Herz, Tú, alma mía. Tú, corazón mío, Du meine Wonn’, O du mein Schmerz, Tú mi dicha, oh tú mi dolor Du meine Welt, in der ich lebe, Eres mi mundo en el que vivo Mein Himmel du, darein ich schwebe, Mi cielo tu, en el que floto Mein guter Geist, mein beßres Ich! ¡Mi buen espíritu, mi mejor yo!
Don’t forget Metternich, but Prey definitely had the most beautiful and touching German baritone voice, no doubt at all. What an artist! Unforgettable!
Prey and Hokanson, two masters! People should listen to their recordings more than they actually do. These two performers where somehow "overshadowed" by other musical couples that were also excellent but not so fresh and genuine as they were. Well, this is just my opinion.
1 Widmung Du meine Seele, du mein Herz, Du meine Wonn', o du mein Schmerz, Du meine Welt, in der ich lebe, Mein Himmel du, darein ich schwebe, O du mein Grab, in das hinab Ich ewig meinen Kummer gab. Du bist die Ruh, du bist der Frieden, Du bist vom Himmel mir beschieden. Daß du mich liebst, macht mich mir wert, Dein Blick hat mich vor mir verklärt, Du hebst mich liebend über mich, Mein guter Geist, mein besser Ich! (Friedrich Rückert 1788 - 1866)
I think Fischer-Dieskau 's DG recording from 1966 with Jorg Demus is the absolute tops (available on CD in the Fischer-Dieskau Edition) more youthful and natural than his 1970s with Eschenbach, I admire Hermann Prey so much here. Can I also say.... Germans only should sing this song!
Ive never heard such a clear male voice without any of the funny voice noises I always seem to hear from baritones and tenors ! I must find translation of this song which I only knew from Cliburn playing the Liszt arrangement !
the description has one. here is another: You my soul, you my heart, You my rapture, O you my pain, You my world in which I live, My heaven you, to which I aspire, O you my grave, into which My grief forever I’ve consigned! English Translation (by Richard Stokes, author of The Book of Lieder (Faber, 2005)) interestingly he sings "Bild" instead of "Blick" in the line "Your eyes transfigure me in mine,". It changes "eyes" to something like picture or likeness. maybe it is easier to sing or he had someone in mind that died or he could not reach.

This is lovely in every respect, but I really think Thomas Quasthoff has the better interpretation.
I’ve been looking for a less bombastic version of this. Found it….absolutely divine❣️
German clap on one and three; those are their extraneous histrionics
I never get bored with his voice. Every day I'm listening to his songs for more than 25 years. Still listening.
Hello, you are happy man.^^
Tears in my eyes every time l hear this. Such a perfection from our dearest Hermann…
Totally Agree!

Thx
Thankyou.
He was so beautiful, with that Puckish smile, those sparkling eyes, and his wonderful performing on stage--not just vocally. Loved him and love him still.
Two masters of their crafts, and both very gentlemanly as well. A wonderful performance, indeed.
Gorgeous voice and musicality put at the service of the music and text. A great , but humble human being. The incomparable Hermann Prey.
I am reading his autobiography "First Night Fever" gives a real flavour of the man... both he and Fischer-Dieskau were joyous human beings with that touch of God given electricity!
He was SO young here! RIP Herman Prey whose birthday anniversary is today.
This was poetic. A two line rhyme ❤
What a voice. One of the greats. Thank you for this recording of one of my favourite pieces.
A most pleasing rendition of this beautiful song: of other magnificent performances, that of Kathleen Ferrier is one of my favourites.
First praise goes to Schumann
Absolutely!!
Hermann Prey's all Schubert concerts at 92nd St. Y - unforgettable
Wonderful singing, an excellent accompaniment, and (an added value) a frank and winning gaze and smile from Hermann Prey throughout. A delight!
Beautifully sung by a great artist
Danke, Hermann Prey !!!
This is in my opinion one of the best lieder composed in romantic period.
Indeed. (*Lieder)
What a beautiful performance! Thank you for sharing this.
Absolutely wonderful! And for a baritone to sing this in the tenor/soprano key... wow!
Singers with voices as rich as this are rarely successful with lieder but Prey manages to "read the text" on the music with great sincerity and conviction. Subtle and effective gradations of tone within a well-sustained overall mood.

One of the most beautiful songs ever written, by the most beautiful lied duo ever. God, how I miss Hokie.
You my soul, you my heart,
You my rapture, O you my pain,
You my world in which I live,
My heaven you, to which I aspire,
O you my grave, into which
My grief forever I’ve consigned!

My guardian angel, my better self!

So beautiful.... wonderful....
Simply fabulous. Marvelous range and articulation.
He always sings leider with perfection and depth of meaning and spirit intended by Schubert in all

Yes, he does. I was wondering who he made me think of.
It's a joy to watch him sing.
Beautiful! This performance gave me shivers!
We live in a world where Florian Prey is worried that his Dad will be forgotten! That will be impossible while I draw even one last breath!
Un des plus grands, assurément !
One of the greatest!
Ganz sicher einer der größten!
Hermann Prey was one of the best singers of Lieders, beautiful rendition of Widmung.
Beautiful interpretation and voice!
Beautiful.
Remarkable technique, this is truly a fabulous singing lesson.

Ach wie herrlich!
Wunderbar gesungen.
This is one of my favourite videos on youtube
Watching this again after two years and I still feel the sincerity in his eyes. This is the best version for me😍😍

great for solo pianists to hear learning the Liszt transcription. Love Hermann Prey.
Thank you for posting this.
The video is quite helpful because the open and closed vowels are quite clear when we can see as well as hear.
True, you will rarely ever find a singer with better diction than Hermann Prey
Such singing, such a song, such music. Nun lass mich sterben.
Preciosa voz, intensa, profunda y dulce a la vez.
A great lieder singer. He also was a very good Beckmesser in a Die Meistersinger Bayreuth.
The best German baritone
and Dieskau!
Ja er ist der Beste!
Don’t forget Metternich, but Prey definitely had the most beautiful and touching German baritone voice, no doubt at all. What an artist! Unforgettable!
wonderful!
I consistently prefer Prey to his better known contemporary German baritone colleague.
As do I.
So do I !!!
Indeed!
Me too, and yet his better known contemporary German baritone colleague wasn't half bad either! But I particularly agree on this regarding Widmung.
As do I.
I don't know what makes me weep- his singing or the fact that Schumann wrote it when he already knew Clara isn't for him.
Just starting to learn this song. This is definitely my reference video.
me too haha how was it?
No wonder, that his marriage was so happy. Which woman could resists this!
I agree with you !
I totally agree!
How handsome he was!! And so expressive!!
I'm a man and I wouldn't resist as well!
Lmao I thought u meant Schumann for a min

Good for my vocal lit class to hear
@pianomags BEAUTIFUL
Hola.
Gracias.
Du bist wie eine Blume de Schumann
His autobiography "First Night Fever" is readable and interesting.
Excellent!
He just sails over thoes high F#s. Wish I could do it like that.....
Magic 📣📣📣📣
❤️
Agree....although I'm hardly a world class singer. I have paying gigs but if singing was my day job I would be on food stamps!
F# isn't an easy note for many baritones. I have them, but I have to work for em!
such sad eyes! hehe he's a cutie
joya total
😘😘
Schubert would be proud of Schumann.
göttlich
🔥
What on earth is he wearing?
