I can imagine a store saying no if they already carry candles from another maker, but if they don't carry candles, I'm sure they would be amenable to saying yes, I'm very impressed with your energy and enthusiasm. I'm sure you'll do just fine.

I think you are just as good or better than other small candle business owners. You bring something that the others do not. Relatability and vulnerability. Thanks for that! I can't wait to see your progress Allen.

Allen, Listen, if this makes any bit of help: Boutiques and businesses can't make money unless they have a product to sell. Remember the 3 pillars of a luxury product as well: Quality (handmade), Rarity (not mass produced) and unique (I think you got that down). I recently went into a store on the sunset strip where some of the richest people go and had a guy BEGGING me to give him candles after I told him what I was planning. The brand I was making was so new I didn't even have a name and logo yet. When I did some keystone pricing, he ended up taking my candles on consignment and said I needed to almost double my prices for his clientele because if it's too inexpensive they will think it sucks. Value is perceived differently. Partner with the right stores and when you feel nervous remember that you have a product they need to sell to make money since they themselves don't make products. Do a few consignment deals and the stores don't even have to buy them until they are sold. Make sure to do a consignment agreement with a list of what candles they have and what they are pricing them at. You take half. So if a $40 candle ends up being $80 at their store you just made a very healthy margin! Lastly; life begins at the edge of your comfort zone. Push yourself to do the thing that makes you nervous. what's on the other side of it is amazing.

Clayton, wow thank you so much for taking the time to share this valuable advice! I am grateful to have you here. I will absolutely be considering the idea of consignment and starting Earthglow’s wholesale this way so that it can be a win-win for stores.

@@earthglow glad to be of help! Just remember if you start to feel nervous about approaching a store, tell yourself that they need you not the other way around. They don't know you exist and that's why you're there. Once you have a few interactions with a few business owners you'll realize they're always happy to hear about other new products they weren't even aware existed. And worst case scenario they may point you at some other businesses that may be more appropriate if they don't feel like it's a good match

Do you think it would be a bad idea to offer them something like consignment with a 50/50 profit split with a minimum required retail amount, where I’d leave some candles for a few months and email them every month inquiring the count they sold and then at the end of, say, 3 months if they haven’t sold any that I’d come and pick them up (or if they have sold a lot, I’d restock)?

Allen, love your videos, they have been so helpful to me-and I’ve been many candles for nearly 30 years!
I took a course called The Wholesale way (highly recommend) and learned a lot of good tips on getting products into stores. Probably the biggest tip was to mail samples to prospective buyers with a handwritten note. No one does this, and it’s such a great technique and it saves a lot of awkwardness on both ends. They can peruse your products, you can follow up later, And if you are on Faire or another whole sailing website, you provide your ordering information there as well. Just wanted to provide this tip since you have been so helpful to all of us! ❤

I got my first wholesale order from being at a farmers market. And then hopefully a second one soon I already had candles on me I was meeting a friend at a coffee shop and the store next to it I went in and showed my candles. She said to email her my line and price sheet which I did have not heard back yet

I understand everything you said. My business is 2 and half years. I’m outgoing in person but my weakness is my online presence is there but not strong. I hope you find the courage to work past the cold feet. I’m not as far along as you. I kind of paused producing for a while because the market is super saturated. I live in south Florida and love it here. My network isn’t large here because I’m from Atlanta.

Hi! You can email the stores first with a short introduction, and a link to your website and your youtube channel. They might like that you have a online presence and can advertise their store. Just ask them when would be a good time to stop by their store to show them your products. Always be yourself and don't worry about people who don't support your community. You wouldn't want to be part of their store anyways. It would be so much easier if you would live in NYC. I could tell you lots of places and artisan markets you could sell your candles. Good luck!
