      It's a 1998 Broom 39. We bought it 6 years ago and things have changed a lot since then. Should be some insights on broker websites. Hope you get to come cruising.

    You two are awesome!!!...The wife and I are going to be doing that very thing...Retiring afloat. I've got a thousand questions, but this is the first question that is the question that is plaguing me. Do you recommend buying a boat or just renting and living in one location (as a home base)? My best Buddy made a comment about boats (he is the General Manager at a large Mega Yacht Marina in Ft. Lauderdale.) He says "If it Floats, Flies, or Fucks...Rent it!" but I do want to have the luxury of having my own things and my own space...but $200,000 of something that is a "buy, use, sell" situation. I would love to see things like, each countries husbandry services (if any) groceries, parts, mail and package deliveries? Speaking of Mail and packages being sent to you what do you use for a mailing address?
    These are but a few thins clanging around in my head...can you do a bit of tiding up of my thoughts please? 🙂

      Hi Neil. All good questions. We like the idea of owning the boat, travelling at our leisure and being able to see new things but there are plenty of nice places to rent where you can explore via car. It idea though of waking up in a new locations has it's appeals. Most things these days are available online (bank statements, emails etc.) but when we need a delivery it takes a bit of planning. If we are ordering something through Amazon or similar, we usually choose a pick up location nearby and just pick it up instead of getting it delivered. We have also had things delivered to marina offices (contact them first to make sure it's ok). It just take a bit of planning and organisation. We needed some parts to repair a toilet and they were delivered to a marina office. Everywhere we go there are always seem to be supermarkets close but once again a bit of menu planning is handy.

      @@RetiredAfloat Thanks so much...that info really help me in my planning. We want to stay in Europe for at least a year or so and I was also thinking of a Flat for the first 6 months...and since the UK is not in the Schengen area that was going to be my entry and exit point in Europe thus avoiding the Schengen region constraints for vacationers...what do you do at the 90 day mark is there a secret??

      @@neilsauve9847 Yes there is. When Schengen came into effect, member countries had the option of ceasing or maintaining their existing bilateral agreements. Eight EU countries maintained their agreements with Australia including Germany, Netherlands, Italy, Belgium and the three Scandinavian countries. This means that we can have our 3 months in Schengen, leave EU for a day (to UK) and come back into one of those 8 countries and start another 3 months. It's changing again at the end of 2022 see here www.etiasvisa.com/etias-news/eu-bilateral-visa-waiver-agreements

      @@RetiredAfloat I have been reviewing a lot of information over the years on how to navigate around the Schengen visa issue and never saw this BILAT agreement. My initial plan was to use the UK as my entry and exit point. but that is like putting duck tape on a leak...works for a min...but! Thank you again for your help and Mentorship...it is greatly appreciated!

    How much fuel do you use?

    • @RetiredAfloat
      @RetiredAfloat  2 года назад

      Very little David. We have two big 300hp Perkins which is far too much for the canals but the plan has always been to one day get out into the Med. We cruise on one engine at very low revs and don't use much fuel. We use both engines when we are maneuvering into a berth or lock. At the start of the season (5 months) we put 600 litres into the boat and that should take us through the season.
