  • This lovely little port is next door to Dieppe, so easy to visit and is the site of the last stand of the 51st Highland Division during WW2 which partly enabled the evacuation at Dunkirk.

      Isn't St Valery en caux interesting! I didn't find out about the 51st until after I left and one of my subscribers told me about it in an email about something else - Then I did the research - Nice place with a few old bits that somehow survived the German bombardment

    Thank you for your video. Like a previous gentleman, my father was also captured at St Valery and marched through France Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany to arrive at Marienberg, Poland to spend the rest of the War as a POW. Sadly upon return to the UK after the war he was hospitalised with T B. Despite this tragedy, he was 20 when he was captured, he was always a positive man and great fun to be with. He was always my hero although he only talked about the lighter side of life in the camp, albeit they were few and far between. Sadly he passed away in 1985. In the early 2000s my wife and I, with my sister visited St Valery We stayed in the town and visited both the stone monument and the war graves (kept to a high standard by the locals). We then followed the route he would have taken as a prisoner, to Poland, the best we could. Gaining information from various internet sites. A humbling experience. Again thanks for your video, viewing St Valery from a different perspective. Kind regards.

      Thank you so much for that.. what a brave man your father must have been. Since I learned the St Valerie story, my perception of WW2 has changed somewhat. It was one of my subscribers who introduced me to it as on my first visit. I had no idea such a momentous event had occurred there. Very interesting to hear from a relative! Thank you

    A sobering story, one I was utterly unaware of. Excellent as ever.

    • @SailingGently
      @SailingGently  3 года назад

      Yes - Really interesting what we don't know - Dieppe raid is also sobering - and Boulogne was bombed to destruction around the port - likewise Royan - shelled to the ground with only 150 Germans in situ

    Hi Michael We are based in Dover making ready for extensive cruising... well, waiting for Covid 19 really at this stage. Being new sailors and somewhat nervous it was like a ray of light to discover your wonderful videos covering all the areas we are just about to begin to explore... including perhaps the French canals. Having video of entering the ports is absolutely brilliant.

      Hello, I am so pleased they are useful and encouraging. I thought it might be helpful to make pilotage videos and show the ports and marinas on a moving screen but was not certain, so your kind words mean a lot. Have a wonderful season next year.. Might see you out there!

    Thank you, my father was captured at St Valery in 1940 and spent 5 years in Stalag 8b in western Poland. He died in 2013.
    I never heard him speak about his capture .

      I'm sorry for your loss... Sounds like your father as a very brave courageous man who chose to get on with life and not dwell on the past but it would have been fascinating to hear the story first hand! Thank you for watching the video

    Another good video and another place on the list to visit. And what an amazing story - I had never heard this one. I'm guessing you've snapped up the film rights already. It is definitely a story that needs to be told.

      It's interesting when the stories are not all Private Ryan success issues and I think the very successful censorship by Churchill et al is impressive.... Found out a few years ago that the BBC did in fact collaborate with the government over news broadcasts and massaged the information... It is a really nice little town - and some old bits still standing

    Excellent account - thank you - wondered if you have sailed into Honfleur and / or Deauville, and if you have the material to make videos of those....both very interesting ports........love the videos, wonderful channel, thank you !

      Hi Calvin, In the past I have been into Honfleur as it is at the mouth of the Seine and was a useful stop on my way into the Canal system.. I will do more 'local ports' in the future but my next 'voyage' is probably going to be down to La Rochelle and back for the summer...

    I accidentally deleted all the very nice comments you made on this page. There does not seem to be anyway to reinstate them. Really sorry as I do appreciate the remarks and comments made by viewers and it makes the project seem worth while... Steep learning curve this RUclips system..

      Very much enjoying your practical pilotage series, which are unique in their style. Really good. I've one favour to ask you to include. I sail a catamaran. She's not huge @5.4m beam and it would be helpful to know any beam restrictions as these are often missing from the almanacs too (eg especially to the locks and the lift out facilities you often mention). If you can also elaborate on berthing costs ( including any cat overheads) that would be awesome...how about doing it as, say, a % of Cherbourg, or Premier Gosport, or some other well know baseline? Keep up the good and unique work 👏👏

    • @SailingGently
      @SailingGently  3 года назад +1

      @@moonhand8311 I am pretty certain that because all French Channel ports and harbours are or were commercial ports your beam would not be a problem - except in the canals where it would be a no no.. Even Grand Camp Maisy would be ok I think. You can check on line by putting in Port de Plaisance --- name of the place --- as they all have web sites with at least basic information.
      I found last year I was paying around 30 euros a night for my Beneteau 323 - trouble is they all have a charges system that depends on the size of the boat and the season - and some do it by beam and others by beam x loa but without exception they are nearly all far less expensive than South coast UK marinas which I find devastatingly expensive.. My marina berth in Boulogne is 2000 euro a year! Superb facilities...
      So pleased Moon Hand you find these pilotage videos useful - If covid permits I will do more this summer - Fair winds

      I'm intrigued by your video and the story of pirates ..what countries can you sail to where you dont need permission and or passport ? We are looking to sail from the southern Florida area to Bahamas and key west and possibly some other areas ?

    • @SailingGently
      @SailingGently  3 года назад +1

      @@jenzanoni9305 All countries require you to have a passport and Ships (boats) registration papers. You have to legally clear in and out with crew lists etc. Some require you to have a visa before you arrive - the USA for non American yachts, Algeria. . Normally you can get clearance in by doing the paperwork yourself. During my circumnavigation I had to use agents to clear me in to Sri Lanka & East Timor the rest of the time I did it myself

    One other question: is the port tidal..or controlled by a lock? I note you advised against fin keels...

    • @SailingGently
      @SailingGently  3 года назад +1

      NIck hi, Sorry I didn't intend to advise against fin keels you just do not want to get stuck in the outer harbour at LW with one..
      but the system is you go into the outer harbour around HW - i think 2 hours either side or whatever I say in the video and there are waiting buoys you can tie up to or just stooge around - Then the lock gates open show green and departing boats exit - its all very civilised and pleasant..

      @@SailingGently You're welcome. Your videos made me relive the trip I made to Guernsey and back in 2019. Except that I could now hit myself over the head for sailing non stop from Cherbourg to Fécamp. Should have stopped over in St Vaast and all the other nice places you show in your videos. Great work. Greetings from a fellow solo sailor.
