- In just a few years, Turkey has gone from relying entirely on banana imports to meet its domestic demand, to being on the verge of becoming an exporter of the tropical fruit. Turkey uses extremely high import taxes to imported bananas from Latin America. Latin American bananas cost twice as much in Turkey compared to European countries despite Turkey being much poorer. The locally produced bananas can not compete with imported ones. That's why Turkey only exports a tiny percent of their total production, because without artificial government intervention the industry can not survive. Us consumers always pay the price.
Turks should also sell the green banana (unripened state) as the Latin population is growing in that country it would be a profitable we Latins use the green banana in many dishes - also the Plantain should be considered for harvest in Turkey as its uses are numerous as well both unripened and ripe they are DELICIOUS! Both Bananas and Plantains are harvested in the same manner.
