nearly 15 years later and we're STILL coming back to this, arguably the greatest cinematic trailer Blizz has ever done. this one, this one just hits different. Long live the King.
Upvote this. Arthas was and will always be the greatest, most awe-inspired threat Azeroth has ever faced. Now his reign has ended and we shall never see his like again. QQ
In my humble opinion, Arthas shall forever be one of gaming’s greatest villains. His rise, his fall, and his tragic nature essentially make him to Warcraft what Darth Vader was to Star Wars.
The reason Wrath of the Lich king is remembered by many as the best expansion, regardless of gameplay, is because this one had the best villain. Specifically, the most personal villain. Illidan was always shady even before his corruption, Deathwing has been been a menacing figure but mostly in the background, no one liked Garrosh from the beginning, the orc leaders were known and liked but bringing them back felt odd, and the Burning Legion and Sargeras have always been a nebulous evil that no one really understood. But Arthas. We not only watched but we experienced him as a young paladin, madly in love with his childhood friend and following his longtime mentor, doing everything in his power to protect his homeland and the people he loved. Trying so hard to do what he believed was good, but facing moral conflicts and being unsure of what to do, desperately trying to save the most amount of people as he could at any cost, before finally giving in and betraying all he defended. We experienced him undoing everything he and his kingdom had built, callously allying with his greatest enemies, yet distantly feeling remorse and shame for what he had done, before finally destroying that part of him and becoming one of the greatest evils yet seen. Other villains may have technically been more powerful or more evil or more dangerous, but the Lich King is the best Warcraft villain because we were closest to him and felt the effects of what he did stronger than any other villain's. We didn't face him because a quest giver told us to, we faced him because we wanted to. Because we had to.
Indeed, Arthas is the most popular character in Warcraft Universe, without a doubt. The reasons for his popularity is that he played a major role in Warcraft 3 series, his backgroud was well developed, he had a more "logical" goal, being something like victim and villain at the same time (way better than any of the others major antagonists). That said, its not hard to see that he was greatly inspired in who probably is the greatest character of modern culture: Darth Vader. Also, based on a great thought: "He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster".
@@lorenzocora9529 I for one didn't forget. Which is why I am aware of the fact that he was ambushed and had not even merged with the Lich King yet. It was during the time that the Lich King's powers were weakened.. the same time that Sylvanas and others were freed from his control.

It's because we all experienced his fall through the campaign of Warcraft 3 that made him such a strong character. We saw him arrive too late at Strahnbrad, purge the city of Stratholme, betray his men in Northrend, turn Sylvanas into a banshee as a Death Knight, and finally take up the mantle of the Lich King. I recognize its downsides, but being there in Northrend, being able to meet the Lich King again and his sheer presence throughout the leveling experience was just majestic. "My child, I watched with pride as you grew into a weapon... of righteousness." As he draws one of the most evil weapons to ever exist, the weapon that turned his son into a weapon of death and evil. Then finally, "Remember, our line has always ruled with wisdom and strength, and I know you will show restraint when exercising your great power." Arthas has awakened now, and his goals are anything but restrained: the total subjugation and extermination of the living. Simply excellent.
@Merengues PerSempre It really is sad, so many developers I used to love have fallen from grace. Blizzard/act, Bethesda, BioWare, CD proj. Part of me just wants another gaming crash to wipe the slate clean.
The fact that Arthas actually *still* restrained himself even after his corruption adds more feel to this. Like yeh sure Arthas chose the path of power, but that was because he saw no other way. And as *the* Lich King, he controlled his powers to a minimum, because if it was up to only the Lich King, Azeroth would fall. But Arthas, who has now finished all his quest in life, reflects on his mistakes and regrets them. But the only way he can make it right is to make sure it doesn't happen again despite being in the control of the Lich King
To add on to what your saying, as soon as the guy says “i know you will know restraint when exercising your great power” arthas immediately proceeds to resurrect a giant dragon XD
me too. same goes for the WotLK announcement trailer, and the "fall of the lich king" patch promo vid. I doubt WoW will ever have another villain that is as completely badass and epic as the Lich King. My first kill on him is my all time favorite moment in all my years of gaming.
"No king rules forever" R.I.P. Earl Boen 💔the voice of our childhood. According to his daughter, he passed quietly in his sleep. People say that is one of the better ways to go.
+Иван Янков they might if they find good musicians, create some amazing music, and actually put effort into their content, as well as not skimping out on stuff they said that would be in the game.
This is ALL they have to do.... make first movie about arthas’s teen years and culminating in the Frozen Throne, then a follow up starting in WOTLK up to the Fall of the Lich King
WoTLK peaked because TBC was a great expansion, So people thought the sequel will be better, WoTLK is more or less the same as TBC but butchered the lore. Then people got disappointed and didn't bother with Cata so it went downhill.
@@hadji9354 What? They're not talking about player count here. This is simply a point in WoW full of nostalgia, where the community was at its high peak, it was the end of the original storyline with Arthas, the most beloved villain in WoW. Ofc many people are gonna consider this time the peak of WoW. WOTLK 3.3.5 is the end of an era.
This is by far the greatest expansion and villain because his story was told long before wow . Watching his character go from good to evil and then having him return in wow was what made it so epic
This is hands down the best cinematic of any game. From the dialogue and the background stor..., the music. Everything fits perfectly.. Oh man the feels. x(
No, latest SWTOR is the best story wise. This is the best.... My english is not the best, so i will try to make you understand the best i can. Dialogue... (spellcheck) Remove it and this video will be almost empthy, soundtrack, remove that too and it will be nothing. SWTOR latest CGI fest, is without a doubt, the best storywise (Storywise) cgi storyfest that i have ever seen. this is also good, no doubt, especially if you know warcraft. But Swtor Sacrifice is.... just insain... It can't be beat, afterall, it's Bioware.
Does anyone pay attention to Arthas' hand? Rubbing his fingers after cleared the snow for reviving the dragon, exactly like in Warcraft 3 cinematic trailer? When he finally back to his kingdom, and his people celebrated him. Sprinkled him with flower petals fell everywhere, then he catched it with his fingers then rubbed it... This trailer did it very well.
@@drag0nfis7 The moment after he wiped the snow in ground, then he rubbed his fingers if you look closely... really reminds me when he catched a flower petal back in warcraft 3 cinematic. He rubbed the flower with his fingers, after that he went to the throne to 'succeeding' his father.
***** same here... just saw ep8 and was debating what was better Scourge or Walkers:)) but we never saw the massive Scourge force attack in WOTLK. I think Blizzard could make the WOW movies and keep milking them, 1 movie per villain/expansion if not with proper actors could do 3D.
GixxerDrei I think that if their first movie succeeds they will probably make some movie about Arthas. It's really amazing source material that shouldn't be wasted.
Mobilone Well, frankly speaking story of Warcraft 3 (campaign of Humans and Undead) Warcraft 3 TFT and Wrath of the Lich King no doubt are the best parts of all Warcraft universe and will be most desired to become movies.
@@austingole4861 as much as we hope so, it’s not likely since the first movie flopped and now video game based movies are becoming memes since they kept messing it up..
the whole purpose of the movie was to introduce characters and lore (we got to see baby Thrall, btw), but that was for the first game, Warcraft 1...IF they'll ever make Warcraft 2, based on the second game, it will be even better...and the third movie...well the third movie would've been this (as in, the best).
I’d rather have them make animated series for grown ups. Live action movies filled with fantasy creatures are very expensive and take so much time to make. I’m not saying digital art is not expensive, but I think it would be better. I really liked Warcraft movie but it somehow felt empty, as if something was missing, only when they started inteoducing these new animated cinematics I’ve realised how much more emotion and motion is possible in animation.
Arthas Menethil, crown prince of the kingdom of Lordaeron, Paladin of the Order of the Silver Hand, and eventual Lich King of the Undead Scourge. The greatest character Blizzard ever wrote. Gone but not forgotten.
+kirkby fast food reviews I was just starting to watch the Legion cinematic again, but I wasn't looking at the screen, so all I heard was "My son..." and suddenly it clicked. Like, "Wait, that's the same as the Wrath cinematic." I love that connection between the two, though, knowing how this expansion ended for Arthas, now I have a bad feeling for Varian.
Legion stands nowhere near WotLK. This cinematic has atmosphere created by combination of music, voice of King Terenas, terrible tragedy of a fallen kingdom all reflected in Arthas and his army. They are trying to buy audience with the feel of the old game memories by adding "My Son" to the Legion cinematic. WoW will never be as great as it was. WotLK was def game prime time, and it will never be the same. Comparing the two expansions is like comparing Kate Middleton to Kim Kardashian...
This was pretty top notch, however Final Fantasy 14's Shadowbringers DLC trailer made it my new top. What makes it even more exciting is the fact that you're basically now becoming the villain of the story.
I was there, 16 years ago, starting college. I played this till I could no longer play it. I remember buying Diablo when it came out christmas 1995 or 1996. I can say that once upon a time, this company was absolutly amazing. It is sad what time and money can do. Now they are nothing but a name...
Oh, now you are old. It is good that you and the other veterans enjoyed this game at that time. I am 16 years old and I like the game and I consider it one of the best wow expansions, I even play it with my boyfriend. Currently the company is not good, but at the time it left an excellent game that future generations could play.
Even Future generations will agree this is one of the most ambitous games ever And it will be my Favourite game for years to come i will show it to my kids i dont care what the cost...
This cinematic represents the best time in my life in regards to playing video games. The lich king storyline and how it was incorperated into Azeroth with Northrend was just pure virtual perfection. It was the pinnacle of WoW for sure and I believe at least one of the peaks of gaming history. I get so unbelievably sad thinking about the fact that that period of time in WoW has come to an end. The game is so different. But I am so happy to have the memories of such an emotional and complete story bound up in a game I loved to play.
Ehrm, not to burst your bubble, but Lich King is actually Blizzard’s version of Night’s King. Blizz devs got inspired by ASOIAF, they stated it number of times. You have fuckloads of references to it all over wow.
Back when we had the real villain, not just giant dude out of nowhere who is evil just because he is evil. And those endless "shocking" reveals about The True Master™
@@thelasttaarakian You can't really compare an RTS to an MMORPG. I agree the game started teetering towards casual territory after vanilla, but BC and WotLK still maintained the core game design elements of vanilla with better PvP, class design, raids, etc. This was the pinnacle of WoW.
"My son. The day you were born, the very forests of Lordaeron whisphered the name... *Arthas".* 13 years later and that line *still* gives me the chills.
I love how everything about King Terenas' speech is the exact opposite of what arthas was doing in this trailer. It goes to show how much he has fallen.
Lord Dia Celium, chauffeur de taxis d'Imhotep Not even close. BC was the best expansion. The last BC patch was all the nerfs, which was the entire point of Roflk, nerfs after nerfs.
Try 10 years, but I completely agree. I have always loved the voice of his father Terenis, and he narrarates this trailer perfectly. A perfect juxtaposition of what he'd hoped his son would grow up to be, and what he did in fact become. CHILLS.
@@the_sandman__ 1:26 still gets me every time. It makes me feel like I'm 14 years old again watching the trailer for the first time. And you worded the narration perfectly. I saw what they were doing, I just couldn't find the words to explain it.
That's exactly the magic of this cinematic. King Terena's dialogue is not there just because nor just to add an emotional aspect to it. It's because of how what Arthas has become is a twisted version of what Terenas wanted. Arthas is king, is stirring the hearts with his people, is using his power... but not quite how Terenas enviosioned it.
King Terenas is giving the dialogue for when Arthas would become King of Lordaeron , never thinking he would actually become king of Northrend and the Scourge.
Zoco 33 Unpopular opinion, but I find the Cataclysm cinematic to be almost close to this. Don't get me wrong, this is perfection and can't ever be toped, ever! But Cata is amazing too, you must admit, even tho expansion was lame.
I mean, I thought the BFA, cata, WoD and wrath being the best ones. Wrath BfA Cata WoD In this order (cinematic trailer-wise.) Expansion-Wise- Wrath Bc Legion MoP Cata WoD BfA? Too early.

But Arthas, who has now finished all his quest in life, reflects on his mistakes and regrets them. But the only way he can make it right is to make sure it doesn't happen again despite being in the control of the Lich King

Legion stands nowhere near WotLK. This cinematic has atmosphere created by combination of music, voice of King Terenas, terrible tragedy of a fallen kingdom all reflected in Arthas and his army.
