You´re thinking of their "sour shark". That is cured with ammonia I think. Yes, like pee. ;)
Surströmming is more similair to thai-fishsauce (nam pla) but insted you chuck the brine and keep the fish, not the otherway around. The unique thing with surströmming is that its cured twice, once in a barrel with salt and then a second time in the can. The Norwegians have something called Rakfisk, which is basically fermented trout. I mean, many cultures have similair ideas. Fermentation is just a way of preservation so its not weird that alot of people come up with similar solutions separately :). Be it fish cured with ammonia, lye or salt etc.....
You should open a can of surströmming outside in a bag or under water in a bucket. The smell evaporates quite quickly after. You often need to go up north to meet people who can prepare surströmming properly. 08:or (Stockholmers) like Malin don´t know what they´re doing ;) :P. Surströmming isn´t Swedish , its North-Swedish! I live in Uppsala an hour outside of Sthlm, and I would´nt feign to know how to throw a proper åla-gille (eal-party) that they have way down south (Shout out!).
Surströmming is also considered somewhat of a seasoning and not the main ingredient. Its often eaten with boiled potatoes , sour-cream and red onions on flatbread. With beer. Some people have tomatoes and boiled eggs with their surströmming. Pay no attention to all the noobs on youtube doing "the surströmming challenge" eating straight out of the can. The difference between that and say "cinnamon challenges" are that most folks have a relation to cinnamon so it doesnt put them off it. Hence the ridiculing of surströmming, saying that its objectivly inedible and rank. Not saying that YOU do :). But sure, its not for everyone. Like with salty liquorice (salmiakki). Or snus. Or I dont know, Gin straight up !
We Swedes dont eat "swedish anchovies" straight either. For those who eat it at all. In Sweden anchovies is not the name of the species of fish, but a certain type of very salty "sprats" (skarpsill) in christmas-spices. Most used for making a creamy potato-dish called "Janssons frestelse" which is really good i think - even if its a required taste. But if I ate the fish as is, i´d hurl! Because its strong. :D

I don't know which Sveden she refers to in the first interview. As a german who just visited Sveden once, I can say, booze cost a small fortune there, so I don't saw much alcohol consumtion. And the girls were very shy or cold indifferent, no much aggression there.

The thing about watching CF in all the videos is you get a sense of when he's enjoying himself, and when he's not. He really doesn't connect with this woman, and it isn't her fault. She's pleasant, plays along, and he's a bit confrontational. There's animosity there on his part all through these visits. I wonder why.
