Sir John Kenneth Tavener (28 January 1944 - 12 November 2013) was an English composer, known for his extensive output of religious works, including The Protecting Veil, Song for Athene and The Lamb.
The Lamb is a choral work by British composer John Tavener composed in 1982. It is a setting to music of the William Blake poem The Lamb from Blake's collection of poems Songs of Innocence. It is one of Tavener's best known works.
The Lamb featured in the soundtrack for Paolo Sorrentino's film The Great Beauty (2013, Italian: La grande bellezza).
While Tavener's earliest music was influenced by Igor Stravinsky and Olivier Messiaen - often invoking the sound world of Stravinsky, in particular Canticum Sacrum, and the ecstatic quality found in various works by Messiaen - his later music became more sparse, using wide registral space and was usually diatonically tonal.Tavener recognised Arvo Pärt as "a kindred spirit" and shared with him a common religious tradition and a fondness for textural transparency.

On the one hand, this piece gives me goosebumps and brings tears to my eyes.
On the other hand, I admire how mathematically correct some parts are, how notes of a bar mirrors and creates a symmetry in the following bar.
I was at a art camp last week and there was a one day workshop where they sang this and prepared it for performance. In the evening, we, the audience, were placed in a room on the floor with the choir in a circle around us singing this song. Incredible experience!
I am currently singing this in my choir, practising for two concerts in December. This one is definietly my favourite in our program. So beautiful.
I sang this *yeeeeears* ago, never could remember the name of it. So chilling, really incredible piece.
I have only just discovered this. It's beautiful. Now I want to find out more about John Tavener....thanks for posting.
Same!
I recommend you the film "the tree of life" of Terrence Malick. You'll discover there a lot of similar music and an a superb film.
@@alexanderoutlander.1040 Many thanks Alexander. The title of the film sounds interesting too!
@@shermoore1693 You're welcome. You'll enjoy it believe me.

It's not a song...
This is so beautiful !
Mirror writing resolving to a unison. Interesting.
Currently singing this in my school choir!!! It sounds beautiful!!! However, as a tenor who has to sing the bass part for balance purposes, those bottom E’s are not nice to sing!!
Sing the low E up the octave ! It should work.
Imagine having so many Tenors that the Tenors have to switch to Bass!
I sing as a bass but I find it difficult as well!
@@klausmuller9699 right? Tenors are so rare
Amazing amazing

We're playing in orchestral version of this in orchestra and it sounds really cool. The 11/8 time signature is so confusing!
Lovely 🌹

Great music!
Very moving.
I “like it” but I also can’t listen to it because it makes me very sad about the suffering of existence and people dying, and I just cry.
But that's not the point, the point is that something exists outside of time and space, called God and yes there is suffering and death, but if you look into it, this is explained as just a part of it all
No, you are correct. when Blake utilise symbols like lamb: innocent and pure, he almost always intends to draw the bleak irony of existence coming from experiences of injustice, suffering and agony. His sympathy for the innocence is so strong that his depiction of the bleakness is really intense too due to this. Your gut feeling is 100% spot on in this sense. I too become too emotional when I listen to this piece, almost unbearable.

Little lamb, who made thee?
Thanks for this :-) Is this the original score and not rearranged?

Lmao I thought it was by John Taverner (1490-1545) when I saw the notification.
I also confused them yesterday... :p
@@noahmoment Haha if you look at some Renaissance music in the 16th century, like Gesualdo and Jacob Handl, its just as dissonant as 20th century modernist music.
