I saw this live in Japan back in 2018. I'm 60 yrs old, and I can honestly say, no band in over 45 years of going to shows, has affected me like Dir en Grey does. If you ever get to the chance to see Dir en Grey live... DO IT! They don't tour the US much, last time was in 2019. I saw them in a venue that holds 450 people. Probably the best show I've ever seen from a single band... ever.
You've literally touched on a small tip of the iceberg of power and emotion that is Dir en Grey.

Man, you might be the only person I've seen react to this video that acknowledged the connection between what is being shown on the screen and where this takes place.
That connection is the reason this performance was such a powerful one, which can be seen on the faces of the crowd.
Japan has never forgotten about that and somewhere inside then they hold these feeling for that atrocity to this day.
You almost cried, and I did cry 😂
    Gut-wrenching performance. A real masterpiece

  • @kira5563

Vinushka is so emotional omg. And that performance is my all time favorite. They poured so much thought and passion into it. I always get a shiver when I look at the audience and when I see Kyo like that. You know that's a hard topic and also it's a very difficult song from technical perspective but he was flawless. That's hard not to cry actually.
So, there are a lot of discussions about the lyrics and the message but I will try to give you my perspective because this song really deserves attention and maybe you'll be interested in reading my useless thoughts 😂. I believe that Kyo chose the word "Vinushka" from Russian "Винушка" and it basically means "Guilt" in diminutive form. As a native speaker I can tell you that we don't use such form anymore and it sounds quite strange to the ear. I would typically see it in very old folk songs for example. The whole MV (highly recommend checking out the uncensored version although it is really heartbreaking) is focused on the theme of war and what it looks and feels like. They used the real footage of victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings both for MV and for the screen at that concert. In fact, WWII is a great example that they present to us and that correlates with the poetry. However, the meaning of the song is for sure broader and deeper and for me it's a discussion about what or who can be called evil and is it evil in reality. Why do we think that something is right and something is wrong? How do we define it? What dogmas should we follow or should we not? What is truth and where it lyes? Appearances can be deceptive so what if we are all wrong and it is all vice versa? Can it be a justification for our actions and what will be left afterwards? It is quite interesting because you'll hear two strong and aggressive parts and the aftermath both times like after the bombings. For me that perfectly connects with the tragedy of Japan and adds another emotional layer.
I have never seen someone that can deliver so much emotion and pain with the voice. Kyo is not a super trained singer (he had some lessons after dealing with some serious vocal issues but for a decade of even more he was basically singing without studying) but he pours his heart and soul and it 100% pays off. He's one of the best.
In case you are interested in Kyo's vocals I would recommend watching Tousei or better Ware, Yami Tote (from tour 16-17) live.
Anyways, sorry for such a long comment and thanks for a great reaction! Hope you'll have a great day! ♥️

Great reaction ! To answer your question regards on Kyo’s singing, he actually is self trained, he didn’t get formal training. A lot of people criticize how badly he performed in some dir en grey concerts, I won’t deny sometimes it’s really bad, so bad that to a point that he couldn’t even make a sound out of his vocal cord, all audience heard is a constantly cracking voice that he used his whole body strength to push out through his severely damaged vocal cord, yet people who understand him would still applaud, because that’s what Kyo is, he is the best vocalist to express emotion, as a matter of fact, he writes all the lyrics for dir en grey, so he views himself as a story teller more than a singer in dir en grey. People who know him won’t doubt his caliber for being a vocalist, it’s just that his priority is expression instead of singing songs perfectly, and a lot of their songs are really difficult to sing too. You can see how his priority changed when he is performing in Sukekiyo, compare to dir en grey, his singing style is much more delicate and technical when performing in Sukekiyo.

One of the things to me that changed my view of this song was to learn that it's being told from the point of view of someone that is going to be put to death. It's worth rewatching it again with that perspective. Kyo is, by all means possible, one of the best vocalists and story tellers of all time. Dir En Grey's theme is always pain, so although a lot of people look at this song as a view of war and what it does to us, it's better to look at it as a look at what pain, grief and anger (as part of the human experience) will make us do to each other.

Is it my birthday again??? sukekiyo and Dir en grey on the same day? 😃
This reaction made me really emotional and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your thoughts on this one. Listening with you was a real pleasure!
The word Vinushka is a neologism that probably derived from the russian word for guilt and might mean something along the lines of 'guilt you have to live with for the rest of your life'. The pv for this one obviously is about WWII but the song can easily be put into other contexts, too - just to give an example it's interesting to know that the working title for this song was 'Daburin kara no shirase' -which translates to 'A notice from Dublin'. You can see glimpses of newer events in the video playing in the background too. The live this is from was held at Yokohama Arena in 2017 as part of a two day collaboration with a Visual Kei band called Pierrot. Pierrot where inactive before these concerts for a while, so there was a huge hype about them doing these lives - which means that there is a fare chance a lot of the people in the audience came for Pierrot and not necessarily for Dir en grey. I have no doupt in my mind that everyone who wasn't that interested in Dir en grey before were after this live and you can see the reaction from the audience which, after watching all the live versions available, appears the most emotional. To me that shows how people become 'used' to pain - similar to watching the news. We Dir en grey fans have heard this song countless times and with repetition it might loose some of the imminent feelings you had when experiencing it for the first time. But gladly Kyo always performs each song as if he were doing it for the first time, giving it all the emotion and expression it needs to take even the most numb and pain-used person by the shoulders and shook their body to the core.
He is a true artist that way.
And that's also why I love watching Dir en grey reaction videos so much - seeing someone else hear their songs for the first time is like hearing it for the first time again through the perspective of another person and every time I hear someone elses thoughts on a song it changes my perspective a bit which adds even MORE to the song.
As you were asking for influences: It seems that early on Kyo was more interested in a vocalists stage presence and style. A huge influence to the beginning of their carrier was Kiyoharu from Kuroyume/Sads, but you can also see (and hear) a very prominent influence from Michiro Endo from The Stalin and a lot of punk acts like S.O.D., Gastunk, The Damned etc. He was always drawn to unusual voices though like Genet from Auto-Mod or Dolores O'Riordan from The Cranberries and the artistic genious of Hiroshi Mikami. A constant inspiration are also Alejandro Jodorowsky's movies and soundracks. This seems like a strange thing to name for vocal influence but Kyo is completely self taught and as you noticed in the video he does a lot of different 'voices' - also in the lyrics which sometimes switch perspectives - most noticable when switching from male to female persona but some lyrics also read like there could be switches between an older and a younger person/parent-child and so on. So his lyrics play a huge part in the development of the vocal melody and singing style I imagine, which makes Jodorowsky an important influence.
And then he get's influenced by bands and artists you maybe wouldn't think about like David Sylvian and Madonna whose early albums he recently mentioned in connection to sukekiyo's elecronic sound.
So...he really gets inspiration from everything that touches him in some way and doesn't really care for any musical genre which becomes evident in the use of his own voice 😊

There used to be this (artificial?) rivalry between Pierrot and Dir en grey, at least among the fans, haha. I'm really sad that I wasn't able to see this concert live, it would have been some experience! I definitely agree that this is the most emotional performance, and I think that even when you're used to the song, Kyo's performance always makes it new again, no matter how many times you've seen it.

For another powerful performance from DEG, I can't think anything better than the subbed performance of their song Zakuro! It's probably the most emotional I've ever seen Kyo get on stage and even though I don't think the song is about himself, he seemingly puts himself in the point of view of the character and puts everything he has into performing the song and it really is an experience to see.

Zakuro was stated to be from the point of view of a woman, if I remember correctly. There is no doubt that at least some of the song's inspiration was from personal experience though. While it's a very strong performance and Kyo got quite worked up, I don't consider it one of Kyo's most emotional. I would say the Six Ugly performance of Mushi, or even the Higashisa live from It Withers and Withers are the most emotional he's been (on film at least). Kyo actually cried during those lives

You mentioning that he sounds like different people and like he's "possessed" actually reminded me of a realization I had about one of the things that makes his performances so powerful: he's like a method actor, but for musical performances. Thank you, that was a great reaction! I love hearing your thoughts. Kyo's lyrics are always so metaphorical and poetic (and I have huge respect for all the people out there doing translations, btw) but that only makes them more emotional, to me. Musically, they're so varied that you can keep listening to them a lifetime without being tired of them! Not that I'm biased, or anything...
Yeah, the national trauma of the atomic bombs is really strong in Japan, understandably, and one reason is not just the initial horror but how it kept killing people in horrifying ways for decades afterwards. Their newest single, Ochita koto no aru sora (The sky which has fallen) references it too. And like others have said (Hi, Passio! Nice to see you here!) Kyo also expands on it, making it into something that says something about humanity. Or maybe rather, asks questions about humanity.

The more important thing to remember about the Nagasaki and Hiroshima bombings is that they were NOT military targets. There was no tactical significance for either target. So all the tens of thousands of deaths were 100% civilian. So it was purely an attack not to weaken Japan's military strength, but to destroy their will and force them into submission. So...on one hand it certainly did just that.
