Bringing Our Wheel Horse 520H Back To Life.

- Our 520H has been sitting around collecting dust (and leaves and who knows what else!), and we finally took the time to get it back up and running to be able to use it to work up our garden. Of course the 520H had a dead battery and bad gas in the tank from sitting for a few years. But we managed to get it back up and running with what we would call minimal effort. We also added an extra fuel filter in the fuel line before the fuel pump. Never understood why the equipment manufacturers didn't put an in line filter on equipment that used these Onan engines. You will find the fuel filter in the same location on John Deere tractors equipped with an Onan opposed twin engine. At the best some had a screen in the tank, but that would still allow a good bit of dirt to pass through and into the fuel pump before finally being filtered.

From my experience onan engines are some of the most reliable out there. Wheel horse used them on some of the 200 series tractors too both of mine are 212-5s and I have put hundreds of hours on them and they run perfect
They are smooth running engines with plenty of power. Hardly ever have any issues with the ones in Wheel Horses, but it's a different story when it comes to John Deere. The big difference is how open the Wheel Horse tractors are compared to the old 300 series (And 420) John Deere tractors with the side panels. I saw a lot of valve seats come out of Onan engines in John Deere tractors, but rarely hear of that happening to an Onan in a Wheel Horse. That excess heat build up really takes a toll on an engine.
