I understand the complaints, e.g. the water thing, but people usually act like we as a spieces know everything but in reality we know absolutelly nothing. The water stuff isn't so far fetched. And them not knowing about it before coming to earth and not having a reserve plan for stuff like that isn't weird either. Humans make idiotic mistakes all the time. The part of Ray Reddy, the veterinarian, was played by M. Night Shyamalan, who is also the guy who wrote the movie (or is the director, I forget which) He likes to have a small part in most of the movies he does. He's not a bad actor as well as being an excellent director. I love most of his movies, since he doesn't rely on cursing, blood guts and gore, to flesh out a movie--he relies on the actors to tell the story. If you pay attention, the aliens really didn't have a big part in the movie. Instead, the story really revolved around the reverend and his family, the death of his wife, and how the attack of the aliens on his home, to bring him back to his faith. I'm so glad you two enjoyed it!

yeah, The Happening was his seventh film over all (if you don't count his student film), but the first to get an R rating (the first cut of the film came back NC-17 so he had to bring on another editor to help get it down to an R). but even in that, the gore serves a purpose, is rarely used, and isn't exploitative.
its commonly said that with M Night, he';s like Merril. he always swings away. hit or miss, he gives it his all, and when he hits, its always a home run.

As I was leaving, I walked past a man who said “Well, that wasn’t a very good alien movie.” I leaned over and said “If you thought this movie was about aliens, you completely missed the point.” The movie is about faith and Graham’s journey to realize that even though immense tragedy, the pain of losing his wife, God had a plan and set little things (signs) in motion (asthma, Beau’s water issues, Colleen telling Merrill to swing away) that would eventually save the rest of his family. It is easy to make them in grain fields (oats, wheat, barley, etc.), and even a large one can be made by a couple of people in a single night. Corn is a whole other beast, with very tough woody stems, and it would be very difficult to make a crop circle in a stand of almost mature corn, as was shown in this movie. The thing about the dinner scene. It's analogous to the "Last Supper" Graham believes whole heartedly, that this is the last day on Earth he will be spending with his family. So it's not out of sadness that they are shedding tears, while I suppose there is a little of that. It is ultimately out of fear. to know that this thing is coming, and there is nothing you can do to stop it. Also the way he says "I'm not ready" always gives me chills. On a side note, the moment where he's telling his children about the time they were born. He doesn't want them to be afraid, and he doesn't know what else to do...he doesn't want them to be afraid if they are about to die.

First time I saw this movie I was with some friends at their house at night. This was in a more rural area. All the lights were turned off with the only light coming from the tv. my friend had black trash bags over a couple of the windows on the outisde and it was breezy that night. So while we were watching the movie, we’d see this vague, indefinite motion in the windows. It was pretty spooky.

The hype for this movie was massive. Signs did just over $60 million in its opening weekend at the domestic box office. One of the biggest opening weekends of all time at that point, but nearly unfathomable because it was not a sequel, prequel, spinoff, reboot, remake or adaptation of any sort. No built-in fan base whatsoever other than the Director and actors involved.

Hey guys, love your stuff! I really never thought this movie was about aliens. I think the signs they were talking about were what the family had: Morgan had asthma, Bo had her obsession with water, and Merrill was very powerful with a bat. These three things that the family had, were what they used to combat the aliens. If they didn't have these, they wouldn't have won. And I think that's why Mel Gibson's character returns to being a pastor. He saw these things as signs from God, that were used to help them fight the aliens. I'm not sure if I'm making any sense right now, and I hope you understand what I'm trying to say. That aside, I think that the figure of the alien showing up on the TV screen was one of the greatest directorial scenes I have ever seen in my life!

Or, they were about an alien invasion, but the aliens usually just blew up some buildings and then fought the military. It always felt like an action film and never hit home.
But this film, it felt personal. Imagine being in your own home, preparing what you fully believe to be your last meal, and waiting for aliens to come.

The Greys: they aren't owls. ("The Fourth Kind")
"They stay in the shadows, covert-like..... It's called 'probing.' It's a military procedure. Send out a reconnaissance group. Very small. Check things out. Not to engage, but to evaluate the situation. Evaluate the level of danger. Make sure things are all clear."
    "Clear for what?"
    "The rest of them."
The Army sergeant has a point.
What I find fascinating, though, is that most everyone focuses on the horror-like aspect of the alien invasion of "Signs" - and misses the subtle point: a man who wasn't anchored in his faith, loses it, and then regains it. "Signs" is actually a beautiful film, and that James Newton Howard score is awesome.

But to help explain the crop circles themselves, the news stations had reported the night of the invasion that ships were appearing within 1 mile of each crop circle. The crop circles were used as a means of navigation for the ships and invasion parties, so the ship in their area was not hiding within their cornfield. It had been cloaked and hovering within their area, or had retreated back into space after dropping off the recon group and only returning once the invasion began. Since their house was within 1 mile of the ship on the night of the invasion, it could be implied that their area was getting the brunt of the invasion force, which would certainly make their surviving the encounter, A miracle...

I took a trip in 2003 to England. While there, I got to walk around in a crop circle, and I saw another one from a distance.
Ray is played by M Night Shyamalan. He appears in every one of his films.
Also, Shyamalan likes being able to go home to his family at night, so all his films are shot in Pennsylvania.
Something that set the tone for this particular film is that the first day of shooting occurred on 9/11. NYC is not that far from the location and one of the hijacked planes was forced down into a Pennsylvanian field, killing all on board.
Also, the day Shyamalan shot the scene with him in the car telling the minister not to open the pantry door, Shyamalan learned his beloved grandfather had died.
The minister's wife was psychic; her daughter is, too, which is why the water tasted weird to her and why she was afraid her brother was going to die. It says something that the wife stayed alive and left information with her husband that ended up saving the lives of her family. Her death killed his faith, but finally grasping her meaning resurrected it again.
There is a spiritual core in every M Night Shyamalan film.

There are Angles and Dangles in his directors camera view that are so fun to watch the second time around.
There’s a reason for every thing in the foreground and the background for plot building or explanation.
What did I just see?’What did I just feel? What just came sharply into view, not just with the eyes but with the soul?
Hidden revelations about good and evil, strength and weakness.
    M. Night is THE reason that everyone looks for hidden meaning and plot twists, since the Sixth Sense.
I still can’t see a glass of water without hearing her say, It’s Contaminated then her dancing like the people on tv.
This isn’t my favorite of his but it has grown on me for the meme-able moments in the movie (Gibson, always the comedian) and because it’s still in comic book story board format where you can turn the page and he’s at home, turn the page and he’s at the car wreck, turn the page and he’s at Ray’s house, turn the page and they’re gone but you don’t know why, etc.
You only see and hear what the director wants you to feel in the shot, moment by moment, as you get to the end of the chapter.
it’s definitely better than The Village and OLD but not as good as the Unbreakable Trilogy.
His message is always… You think you Know and You think you’re Safe? You’re wrong. Evil and crazy coexist along with good intended faithful (justice warriors). Yin and Yang of the soul. A crisis reveals a hero and a villain. Fate plays out in it’s own time.

Absolutely one of the movies I wanted to watch with you guys. One of my favorites. Waaaay too realistic. This could happen.

I love this movie so much. It's the perfect combination of two stories and a story about aliens that aren't the main point. Brilliant.

Totally agree. The Alien invasion is just the backdrop. It’s more about faith to me. God do I love this movie

Love you guys, love this movie, love this reaction! Asia, you are not the only one to jump out of your skin at that last jump scare with the alien reflected in the TV. I know it's coming now, and I still jump!
Just so you know, crop circles aren't nearly as difficult or labor intensive to make as you think. They use wooden boards to flatten large areas at a time, and bend all the stalks in the same direction. It takes two guys a couple of hours to make a decent size one.

I saw this at the theater. I’ve never seen an audience jump so high…several times. Good times.
