Just realized: "The brave and foolish ones, they walk not on the center." is a reference to the beginning of the game. The (almost) same sentence is on one of the signs at the ruins. "Brave ones, foolish ones. Both walk not on the middle road."

Of all of Nate's Undertale songs, this is my favourite. It's more ... human. The character singing isn't an upstanding paragon of virtue or a despicable heartless monster. It's someone who's made mistakes. It's weak. It's doubtful.

+finpin and +Colin grigsby Well, this is a neutral route. That could mean that easily both of you guys are correct. But it's your choice that determines the explaination. If you kill toriel, finpin is correct. If you spare her, Colin's correct.
It can go both ways. Toriel is not accepting of any fallen child leaving the ruins (at least at first that is) meanwhile the children can't stay. They want to go home. They are filled with the *DETERMINATION* to go through and/or break the barrier after being told so many stories about it. And I think that's what that line is referring to even though the song seems like it's sung/written from Frisk's (and/or the player's) point of view.
This is fantastic, I never thought there was much to the Neutral run. Basically just an unfinished Pacifist run with an incomplete ending. But you somehow took it and really emphasized the heart behind it. Good job man, I love this song.

I think this is the neutral route when you kill Toriel. Because the setting is in the ruins which looks abandoned, and the player refers that "You" (Which I think refers to Toriel) gave them everything but threw it all away and that they can't live with what they have done. During the rest of the music video it shows an abandoned ruins which sort of shows that Toriel is no longer around. Unaligned because even from the start they can't decide even of Toriel tries to convince them and feels bad for it in the end. Also it seems to connect with the Female Version of Stay sung in Toriel's point of view, where the end seems to be cut off. Maybe she was killed by Frisk and that's why it was cut off and this song is in Frisk's point of view, right after killing Toriel. Welp that's my interpretation. I don't really know for sure.
Also the line: "A Mother and A child, but one is not accepting." May refer to Frisk trying to leave then killing her by accident out of fear or hatred of Toriel getting in the way. Then feeling bad for it. It's sort of pointing towards that direction.
And also "the brave and foolish ones walk not the centre" refers to the sign in the ruins that says "only the brave and foolish ones walk on the middle path" or something
I LOVE that Nate did this song so differently from the rest, it's so harrowing and melancholy, yet honest and awesome. I've never heard any other song like it. Oh my gosh all that money and pain put into that would be crazy think about it, one game over a millenniums (million years I think) worth of trillions of dollars
In my Neutral run, I killed Toriel and Undyne, as well as some other monsters. I thought there was no other option, so I felt satisfied. Then I got torn up about Asgore. I loved poor old goat dad, and I even considered sacrificing myself or finding some other solution. Soon, I accepted Flowey's challenge and went through not killing anyone. I kept recalling how I killed them before, when I could have spared them with just a little more patience...
In my perspective, as a person who only plays pacifist, and has beat it six times with different challenges, I only see a neutral run as a boring mistake, it's too easy, it is sad (not as sad as genocide of course) and unfulfilling, I don't understand the point of doing one, it is just a waste of time. Oh yeah, you can't even say that you just did if for Omega flowey/ the ending, because you need to get a neutral ending during a pacifist run. And genocide is just plain boring and annoying, even if I decided to do it, I would get annoyed by the but nobody cames, that sans fight isn't worth it... I think I got off topic, well I am deleting it so hopefully you like hearing my opinion.
Beautifully done! Not only is the music itself incredibly moving and driving, but the lyrics themselves perfectly describe a torn conscience. Keep being you, man! :3
*tears running down face* How...how do u make a GOOD Neutral Run song? How do you make a Neutral Run song IN GENERAL?!? Nate...you are legitimately...the *_BEST._* musician. *_EVER_* and i love you for it
Osana Najimi when i started undertale i didn't knew of different endings so i was doing a genocide run but at the end i realized it was a neutral run cuz i spared "shiren, TeMmiE, frogit and greater dog" i know it sucks
Tobi Mastermind for me I did the exact opposite...I wanted to do a pacifist but I killed a few people when I realized they gave me more HP just minor characters like jerry and a few before mettaton...
The song captures the essence of the player themselves trying to decide which route they want to do, thus making their thoughts unaligned, along with their actions. Well Damn Done Nate, Well Godamn Done.
Okay I'm gonna rant for a sec. This song is more emotional than any I've heard. This song shows how hard it is for people to choose to play undertale again. Because you have those who tried for pacifist, but messed up. Or those who wanted genocide, but couldn't go through with it. If you start over there's so much time and work you have to put into the game. If you don't you leave them without hope. Stuck in limbo, no hope no end.The neutral route ends with no satisfaction. Even with a genocide route you satisfy your curiosity. Neutral tells you that if you had just changed 1 thing you could have really ended everything. And this song really shows you that through the chorus. The chorus reminds you of Toriel, who would have done anything to make you feel at home. For a pacifist route she was your mom, who you wanted to make proud. For a genocide route she was your enemy. Either way you let her down by making whatever happened to her not matter. That's what makes this song so emotional.
Ok so I sang this song in my school talent show. When I was finished I was hoping they would clap, but I looked up and they were all staring at me and after two minutes they finally clapped and I won the show. Thanks Nate, now I'm a qualified psychopath
"The brave and foolish ones, they walk not on the center" I'm 20 seconds in, and it's already a fantastic reference to the game. That's what the very first sign in the game says. And now thanks to this song it has a whole new meaning than just helping you for the puzzle it's associated with (Toriel solved it for me anyway).
"They make their way to the door, not thinking for their safety" I love how that refers to both Frisk and Toriel, one will get hurt depending what route Frisk chose
Mine was ...... darker. Killed Toriel, Thought: "I might as well roll with it" and killed, killed and killed. At the end, Papyrus ruled the Underground. (Flipped a coin for Flowey. Did not end in his favour)
Too be honest. After Flowey congratulated me for my kill he gave me an idea. Not save. Turn off. turn on and then not kill her. Flowey got that one though and I went back to live with my mistake.
Yes, I am messed up. I embraced that fact some time ago, yet the only times I hate that about me is in matters of love. The human will always desire what they can't get ^^
The brave and foolish ones They walk not on the center The signs are pointing every way And I don't know which route's better Some will take the fall And some will see tomorrow I could be the light or darkness Redemption or sorrow How could I live on with what I've done? You took me in, showed me love When I had nowhere to run You offered me your everything And I threw it all away My indecision keeps me unaligned A mother and a child But one is not accepting They make their way out to the door Not thinking for their safety And now I must decide If I'll create a martyr The voices in my head, they ask If I'm a man or monster How could I live on with what I've done? I just love how this was based on toriel as it is where most people start the neutral route, but after killing toriel decide to spare every monster from then on I think that is a very nice touch.
+The Smashing Masters true cuz everyone spares papyrus, and then Undyne you learn that you have to run, and once you get to muffet and metttaton the game has grown on you so much that you decide it is better off not killing them
By far the best undertale song. The other songs are great, but in this you have the conflict between good and dark, and the regret. The feeling of failing to save your friends. It has the most emotion.
+Daniel M Or had other people spoil it for them. ~_~ Seriously I thought it was an anime from the way people talked about how such and such event happened. I got the game for Christmas but I've only played an hour of it... it's all I can bring myself to play. I know most if not all that will happen and I just don't have the motivation.
I like this song because unlike the Genocide route... the player obviously feels remorse for murder. But the confusion of walking through the Underground, which is full of potentially dangerous monsters, is present. The player doesn’t know wether to defend themselves or take a risk to protect lives they know nothing about.
Favorite song ever. Does anyone else start the song then look at the comments and start to laugh or cry depending on the comments or song??? Or is that just me.....
my first run was Neutral, and this song is perfect for it! i love it! also not only do i love it because it is based on Undertale but also because i think even if you dont know anything about Undertale and never played it this song would be awesome! it doesnt specifically mention things only in Undertale so anyone can really relate to it for their own personal reasons too! but there are some things this song makes me think of in my first run: "how could i live on with what ive done?" i accidentally killed Toriel, i changed it but Flowey KNEW what i did! i swear i didnt mean it! it was an accident i just didnt know how the game worked then. lied to Papyrus. sadly NOT an accident just me being....uh selfish i guess? i was going to go on and not change it but i died literally right after that so when i had the conversation again i just decided to tell the truth. killed Flowey, now i feel awful. i know you're supposed to hate him but i still wanted to spare him, but he said he'd kill everyone i love so i felt i needed to prevent that. now i realize his threats MAY have been empty though so i feel pretty bad about it. so yeah thats some bits from my run that i feel i can relate to this song. gonna go listen to this a ton more times. unfortunately the replay button will not be Spared!
Garnet Tyger even if you don't kill anyone on your first run it will still be neutral until you complete the true lab events. The event can only be accessed after a neutral run in which nobody died. So it's impossible to get a true pacifist run on your first go.
Huh, this is my first time seeing a fan-made song from the neutral route of Undertale. Most are made about the genocide or pacifist routes. I'm going to download this song, and listen to it on repeat for a little while. :3
+Naqmcord It was the Voice, and he was in a group, which he said there was another guy who was better than him, and none of them got through the pre-screening
Eugenideddis no freaking way, i mean I've heard of the old saying that there is always someone better, but i didn't think he would lose in the preliminary round.
I think Neutral route is one of the saddest route to take. In genocide, everyone dies, so there's nothing to be sad about. In Pacifist run, everyone is alive, happy end. But in Neutral... you kill some and let some live... then they call you and you just realize how much of a monster you were... also... have you ever killed Undyne in neutral route?? Oh my heart!!
This is amazing. I never really saw much in the neutral route. A mistake once made in the pacifist route. But this is truly fantastic and has made me look at it differently. You have an amazing voice btw
I have been listening to this for years now, once at least every few days but- I just need to say the following; Everything about this is what Nate's music is to me. The video. The singing. The music itself. Listen to his Sandcastle Kingdoms album, especially the slower songs, and I'm sure you'll see what I mean. It's NATE'S style. Sure, Nate does more than this style. Sure, some of my favourite songs of his are the completely different ones. But this is a style that only Nate does right. His other music? Other people use and fucking rock that style just as well as him. But can you imagine anyone singing this as well as Nate does?
I almost teared up. Your voice is perfect with this song. You should do more… and I know others will love it too. I never thought much of the Neutral Run, but you have made it much more. Thank you. 😌
There are a lot of people out there saying that the route that should really happen is genocide, but tell me, do you think a child would have the courage to kill everyone underground?????? No of course not It would just be high defense, something that every human being fights, to defend themselves, yes of course not to the point of killing more in the undertale game it works like this defending and Unintentionally killing some monsters, after all, we all make mistakes, it's not like everyone is perfect or only you are perfect, everyone has made mistakes at least once or twice.
So I'm assuming this song is for the route likely meant for people to play on their first runthrough of the game. A lot of people probably didn't understand how to beat Toriel and accidentally killed her, and this is the neutral runthrough after this if you didnt reset.
There should totally be two more songs to make a trilogy, unaligned, misaligned and aligned, showing neutral, genocide and pacifist. And a mini album should be made as "Alignment"
Well, I think that he meant for "Dead Silence" and "Promise Me" to be a part of that... actually, then where would "Ashes" be? I suppose this idea could still happen. I support it. I'd also like to hear more lietmotifs in them, but that doesn't have to happen.
this song is literally the most gorgeous thing ive heard in a long time i cant stop listening to it over and over again the second verse kills me so bad
"How could I live on with what I've done" Damn.. Imagine Frisk, not knowing what to do, just kills his/her friends, without realizing that their timeline is just figments of their imagination. They would probably isolate theirselves, knowing that he tried to end the lives of so many.
I love that the beginning verse seems clear-cut at first but the more you think about it the more two-sided it gets: "The brave and foolish ones They walk not on the center The signs are pointing every way And I don't know which route's better" At first this seems to clearly be talking about genocide and pacifist definitively, but the more you think about it, you could be brave by facing the challenges ahead of you and sparing all those that you find, sticking to your guns and not harming anyone; or you could be brave enough to shut away your feelings and kill everything that stands between you and your only chance of escape in a world where everything is strange, unfamiliar, and most often trying to harm you. You could be foolish enough not to harm those that pose no real threat, or foolish enough to be gullible and let them take advantage of your pacifistic nature. "Some will take the fall And some will see tomorrow" Again, seems clear-cut, but you could interpret the fall as either the fall of taking all the blows and pushing forward or taking the blame for all of the lives that you'll end on your journey back to the surface, plunging downward into the darkness of your own temptations "I could be the light or darkness Redemption or sorrow" Light and Darkness are subjective, never as black-and-white as they're made out to be. You could be the redemption of the human race by showing kindness, or the redemption of the human mages' weakness in not finishing the job they started by imprisoning the monsters in the Underground. You could be the sorrow of the monsters by murdering them by the dozen, or the sorrow of your own heart if you fail in your mission to return to the surface and perish in the Underground at the hands of a monster you refused to fight. These lines are really well-written as a truly double-edged sword, showing no purpose or bias towards either particular route, and I think that's part of the reason this is my favorite song on Bad Time because it truly feels as ambiguous and unbiased as the title suggests. Great job with this one, Nate. Big fan.
Of course, Genocide may seem more glamorous, but for most people the neutral run is their first experience of the game. I remember when I decided to do a genocide run and messed it up because I didn't realize I have to actively seek out every monster to kill. :') so in essence, I'm naturally too lazy to be evil enough to be the bad guy in this game.
the song was really good (didn't expect to find a good song about a neutral run) but MAN!!! THOSE 3D PLACES!!!!!! THOSE 3D PLACES, MAN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And genocide is just plain boring and annoying, even if I decided to do it, I would get annoyed by the but nobody cames, that sans fight isn't worth it... I think I got off topic, well I am deleting it so hopefully you like hearing my opinion.

"The brave and foolish ones, they walk not on the center" is a brilliant call back to the first puzzle in the RUINS. Bravo, my friend.
That time you realize you did the neutral run because of the frog you killed at the start of the game -_-
Osana Najimi when i started undertale i didn't knew of different endings so i was doing a genocide run but at the end i realized it was a neutral run cuz i spared "shiren, TeMmiE, frogit and greater dog" i know it sucks
Tobi Mastermind xD
Tobi Mastermind for me I did the exact opposite...I wanted to do a pacifist but I killed a few people when I realized they gave me more HP just minor characters like jerry and a few before mettaton...
I did the same thing because I accidentally clicked fight and I didn't know how to get out XD
@@fireblade4795 you know, you can actually kill jerry,
The song captures the essence of the player themselves trying to decide which route they want to do, thus making their thoughts unaligned, along with their actions.

Yup
"The brave and foolish ones, they walk not on the center"
I'm 20 seconds in, and it's already a fantastic reference to the game. That's what the very first sign in the game says. And now thanks to this song it has a whole new meaning than just helping you for the puzzle it's associated with (Toriel solved it for me anyway).
"They make their way to the door, not thinking for their safety"
I love how that refers to both Frisk and Toriel, one will get hurt depending what route Frisk chose
my first was neutral:
i kill 3 mobs
undyne tell me what i've done
i spare everyone after
Mine was ......
darker.
Killed Toriel, Thought: "I might as well roll with it" and killed, killed and killed.
At the end, Papyrus ruled the Underground.
(Flipped a coin for Flowey. Did not end in his favour)
Crash Kojote first i killed tori too ;-;
Too be honest. After Flowey congratulated me for my kill he gave me an idea. Not save. Turn off. turn on and then not kill her. Flowey got that one though and I went back to live with my mistake.
Crash Kojote :)
Yes, I am messed up.
I embraced that fact some time ago, yet the only times I hate that about me is in matters of love.
The human will always desire what they can't get ^^
Someone needs to animate when Nate went to Temmie village.
I agree
I NEED THAT TO HAPPEN!!
+hunter3824 I think she meant animate
+hunter3824 The definition of 'to anime' is when one either animates or draws a certain subject in the anime style.
*****
I know! I made it up! ;)
The brave and foolish ones
They walk not on the center
The signs are pointing every way
And I don't know which route's better
Some will take the fall
And some will see tomorrow
I could be the light or darkness
Redemption or sorrow
How could I live on with what I've done?
You took me in, showed me love
When I had nowhere to run
You offered me your everything
And I threw it all away
My indecision keeps me unaligned
A mother and a child
But one is not accepting
They make their way out to the door
Not thinking for their safety
And now I must decide
If I'll create a martyr
The voices in my head, they ask
If I'm a man or monster
How could I live on with what I've done?
You took me in, showed me love
When I had nowhere to run
You offered me your everything
And I threw it all away
My indecision keeps me unaligned
Keeps me unaligned
Keeps me unaligned
How could I live on with what I've done?
You took me in, showed me love
When I had nowhere to run
You offered me your everything
And I threw it all away

route they always want to kill goat mama! ;^;
I just love how this was based on toriel as it is where most people start the neutral route, but after killing toriel decide to spare every monster from then on I think that is a very nice touch.
+The Smashing Masters true cuz everyone spares papyrus, and then Undyne you learn that you have to run, and once you get to muffet and metttaton the game has grown on you so much that you decide it is better off not killing them
I love how he uses both Toriel's and Papyrus's fonts. Both of them go with these lyrics.

This has to be my favourite Undertale song. It's so beautiful
By far the best undertale song. The other songs are great, but in this you have the conflict between good and dark, and the regret. The feeling of failing to save your friends. It has the most emotion.
Another title for this song.
"The song for all those who killed goat mama."
TOO SOON
*You feel your sins crawl down your back.*
You shouldn't have killed Goat Mama then!
XD
+Daniel M Or had other people spoil it for them. ~_~ Seriously I thought it was an anime from the way people talked about how such and such event happened. I got the game for Christmas but I've only played an hour of it... it's all I can bring myself to play. I know most if not all that will happen and I just don't have the motivation.
I can see why Random Encounters wanted Nathan to play a character in their FNaF musical.
AND WHY DID THEY KILL TORIEL!?!?!?
Nah dude, I do the same thing.
I do that too!
HittheTARDIS d3 this happens to me all the time 😂
Not just u
my first run was Neutral, and this song is perfect for it! i love it! also not only do i love it because it is based on Undertale but also because i think even if you dont know anything about Undertale and never played it this song would be awesome! it doesnt specifically mention things only in Undertale so anyone can really relate to it for their own personal reasons too! but there are some things this song makes me think of in my first run:
"how could i live on with what ive done?"
i accidentally killed Toriel, i changed it but Flowey KNEW what i did! i swear i didnt mean it! it was an accident i just didnt know how the game worked then.
lied to Papyrus. sadly NOT an accident just me being....uh selfish i guess? i was going to go on and not change it but i died literally right after that so when i had the conversation again i just decided to tell the truth.
killed Flowey, now i feel awful. i know you're supposed to hate him but i still wanted to spare him, but he said he'd kill everyone i love so i felt i needed to prevent that. now i realize his threats MAY have been empty though so i feel pretty bad about it.
so yeah thats some bits from my run that i feel i can relate to this song. gonna go listen to this a ton more times. unfortunately the replay button will not be Spared!
Everyone's first run is neutral, you can't avoid it.
oh ok. yeah that is right.
Micrø Ghøul attuly mine was pacifist cause my friend told me to not kill
Garnet Tyger thats cool. i guess i just played it like i normally would play any rpg except i did spare some monsters.

Okay seriously when is this guy going to stop being humble and compete in America's Got Talent or The Voice?
i know I'd watch those if he's competing! he's just so talented

I have been listening to this for years now, once at least every few days but-
I just need to say the following;
Everything about this is what Nate's music is to me.
The creators of R.W.B.Y should use you for their openings and/or endings

I think they can do amazing openings and endings without his help.
But maybe it could be nice.

These new animations are amazing
I'm not unaligned on whether or not I love this song or not, I love it!

This song almost made me cry.. Amazing work!
love how good this still is!
YES!
Well, I think that he meant for "Dead Silence" and "Promise Me" to be a part of that... actually, then where would "Ashes" be? I suppose this idea could still happen. I support it. I'd also like to hear more lietmotifs in them, but that doesn't have to happen.

+The Triple Gamers and dead silence is chara talking with frisk
You've just created my favourite song, Nate. This is truly amazing.
This could also fit as a Post-Genocide Run song or something
Yeah, the thin lyrics could be Post-Genocide and the bold lyrics could be the beginning of a Pacifist run. That's my idea anyway.
Post-Genocide Frisk could be regretting her decisions, and Pre-Pacifist Frisk could be trying to figure out which route she'll take.
Sorry for using female pronouns, I just came back and realized that I should have used they.
Alia Baxter Good idea.
I like how his content has evolved so much, yet he still has kept his same alias.

The ONE TIME autocorrect could have been useful. The ONE. TIME!
Yep XD
6 years later, still a great bop
jeez man why do you make so sad and good songs, and just listen to this after a rough spot and it helped, thank you so much
Wow, another Undertale song! I didn't see this song coming! Good job! I've been duped!
"How could I live on with what I've done" Damn.. Imagine Frisk, not knowing what to do, just kills his/her friends, without realizing that their timeline is just figments of their imagination. They would probably isolate theirselves, knowing that he tried to end the lives of so many.
I love that the beginning verse seems clear-cut at first but the more you think about it the more two-sided it gets:
"The brave and foolish ones
They walk not on the center
The signs are pointing every way
And I don't know which route's better"
At first this seems to clearly be talking about genocide and pacifist definitively, but the more you think about it, you could be brave by facing the challenges ahead of you and sparing all those that you find, sticking to your guns and not harming anyone; or you could be brave enough to shut away your feelings and kill everything that stands between you and your only chance of escape in a world where everything is strange, unfamiliar, and most often trying to harm you. You could be foolish enough not to harm those that pose no real threat, or foolish enough to be gullible and let them take advantage of your pacifistic nature.
"Some will take the fall
And some will see tomorrow"
Again, seems clear-cut, but you could interpret the fall as either the fall of taking all the blows and pushing forward or taking the blame for all of the lives that you'll end on your journey back to the surface, plunging downward into the darkness of your own temptations
"I could be the light or darkness
Redemption or sorrow"
Light and Darkness are subjective, never as black-and-white as they're made out to be.
Big fan.
*You are filled with DETERMINATION

Neutral Run doesn't get enough love
I agree!
*Facepalms* XD no, it went right over my head before hitting me in the face, just like Sans's Gaster Blasters. That's LOVEly! ;)
