OMG I have listened to this man and the full pieces of Pini and Feste of Rome. This man is the most underrated composer ever!!!! Literally no one points his greatness out, people should know how amazing this man is at making his orchestra literally sing!!!!!!!!!!! Especially at the A major ending segment of the first movement, with a dissatisfying finale, taking us down to the catacombs in a jarring sense. This man was up to something, and I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am studying this piece right now and this video with the piano reduction is so very helpful. The score was making my eyes cross. Thank you for creating this!
I Absolute Love The Whole Thing About Pines Of Rome, By It's Epic Music, The Whales, Fly, The Thrilling Animation, The Power That Secondly Started All Double Times Cool, Powerful "Legendary"
It is the summoning of the spirits of ancient warriors in a depiction of the most epic battle that ever was! No wonder it gets you, it also gets me!!! It's pure magnificence!
So, the melody at 0:18 I don't know if it's used worldwide but in Italy, considering Respighi is italian, is the melody behind the nursery rhyme "O quante belle figlie madama Doré" which I am assuming Respighi is referencing as like a very figurative portrayal of the streets of Rome? In which you surely would have heard and maybe still hear kids sing that little jingle. edit: it is in fact the case
I played this for a camp and it was awesome playing it but extremely difficult to play because the soft parts had to be soft but audible and still sound nice it was easy to mess up because of that. But hearing it for the first time is just wow I’m blown away!
Sadly so limited is my imagination that when I first heard this song watching Fantasia 2000 on VHS that I couldn't conceive of any way to make the Appian Way portion of this song other than to use synthesized music. I thought it was fake modern music but Nope!!! This genius composer clearly 'sees' music.
Thanks for this. But would it be possible to use the full orchestral score rather than a reduction for two pianos? Respighi was such a master orchestrator, it would be instructive to see the instrumentation.
Here : imslp.eu/files/imglnks/euimg/3/39/IMSLP05603-Respighi_-_Pini_di_Roma_(full_score).pdf The full score embedded in the video might not be very practical but you can open a new tab and follow it that way ;)
Is the "Sanctus" of the Gregorian "Missa Cum Jubilo" , an old chant sung during the solennities of the Virgin Maria in the catholic ritual. Respighi loved the gregorian chant and this is one of the many Gregorian quotations that he has included in his compositions. This is the gregorian ruclips.net/video/TvuQZSCKgOM/видео.html
Towards the end of the piece I can hear small parts of the Theme from Superman the Movie. Notes: F Bb Eb F' in a similar rhythm, for example. During the slow passage around 19 mins.
Please watch this at the lowest quality only (144p) since it's just for the music, which is much more ecologically responsible than at a higher rate. Watching this at 240p (which is unnecessary for listening purposes), will increase the bandwith by double to almost tenfold! At 1080 the bandwith is augmented by a factor of 100! The use of digital technology accounts for 4% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions, as much as the emissions from the world's truck fleet. Of that, a BIG part comes from livestreaming videos, mainly 3 sources : RUclips, Netlfix and porn. Let's enjoy this beautiful music by being aware and responsible, doing our little part in decreasing our carbon footprint and protecting this wonderful planet for the generations to come.
@@maximillianmorrison9865 I'm not an idiot, so you can take that back. Taking action for the preservation of the environnement is just a rational thing to do. On the other hand, calling people idiots on absolutely no basis whatsoever is as idiotic as it can get.
Sorry, but i'm dying of laughter. Carbon footprint?! You do realize that streaming at 144p or even 8K will have negligible difference on the environment, even spread out over millions of people.
I must say, I disapprove of the gaps you've added between the movements. The whole thing, while having pauses at the ends of each is one continuous piece. It's fine between the first two, because there's a gap in the noise anyway, but between the last two, it kind of ruins it, frankly. EDIT: "It" in this case being the transition. Other than that, it's fine.
The tutti bassoon chords just before the Procession of the Elders in "The Rite of Spring" has a very similar tone to the theme of the second movement. Or, rather, "Pines of Rome" sounds more like Stravinsky
the melody in the 2nd movement is based on plainchant, which often used the pentatonic scale which is also often used in what we usually think to be eastern music. in this context, its definitely not russian or chinese. plainchant is some of the oldest music ever written, dating all the way back to the medieval era. respighi was a huge music history buff, and much of his music was based around early music. i highly recommend checking out his Church Windows, each movement of which is based largely around plainchant. its truly an exceptional piece, its like pines of rome but even louder and grander!
quit band freshman year and I had trouble playing played 1 or two sheet long songs. how many sheets is this? gotta be at least 20... just wow. this must be hard. SUPER hard. kinda makes today's music look bad...

I agree. It is so relaxing. Even with the beautiful sound of the birds, isn't it? 😊😍😁❤😄👍😇
One of the greatest pieces of music ever written.
