- I can't believe how this ended! In this video, I'll show you how the Volvo 850 T-5 restoration took a terrible turn. I'll show you how I replaced the spark plugs, changed the oil, changed the antifreeze, and more. Then we'll take the Volvo 850 wagon on it's first test drive in years. One problem: we had to coast home!! Complete disaster!!
Fred Flintstone lives again.
That Volvo is a sharp-looking car especially with those Wheels I love the wheels. I also love the boxy style of Volvos
Mike, we love these 90s wagons. I can't wait for a detailing video. Order a nice wooden shifter and other dash wood trim, it would lift the look of the interior.
i like the duck seems friendly around you. volvo is coming along.
Another wagon video. I know I can confidently hit the thumbs up button before even seeing the intro and KNOW that it's going to be great.
I appreciate that
I had a Volvo 740 for many years. Quite different than your wagon, however. Rear wheel drive, for one thing. One day when the vehicle was about 30 years old, I came out and attempted the shift it into gear, heard a little snap, something tiny fell on the concrete below. Turns out the multi decade old plastic grommet that held the shift lever to the transmission had crystallized from heat and extreme age. Disintegrated, and fell off onto the ground. Obviously, your wagon is front wheel drive, but Volvo was a creature of habit, and continued to do many things in similar ways for many decades. I suspect it's something like you described, a linkage failure. Getting to it will be extremely irritating, but should be relatively cheap and easy to fix once the parts are physically accessible.
Mike, the duck needs more airtime please!
Service the transmission and all might be well. Go Mike!!
Mike more repair videos 👍
Can’t wait to see it all polished.
Benzo started quacking in sync with the seatbelt chime lmao.
Yes that was priceless 😂😂😂
Liking the magic camera Mikey, for a second I thought someone was running alongside the car to take the footage, great to see your cars in motion even if that's only briefly 😁, luckily she gave up close to home and on downward slope. She sure sounds sweeter after the spark plugs and fluid change. I had a friend who owned an immaculate 850 wagon but it started to jump erratically between gears once the car was warmed up. I recall that he was told by his mechanic that there's an ECU module that had gone faulty. Perhaps with all the chewed wires by the rats, they've caused a poor connection on your ECU module? I don't know! But I suspect your diagnosis is probably nearer the mark because you moved the selector back and fourth in the engine bay and the plastics are crumbling.
Enjoying the Volvo content! RobertDIY here on RUclips is a great source of diagnostic and repair information, as others have said. I have owned 5 850s, and currently have two (one manual turbo sedan and an 850R wagon). These cars really are worth the trouble to get sorted. Reliable (I have seen several over 300k miles and even a few over 400k), comfortable, surprisingly fast for what they are, and one of the safest cars of the era. Plus they have great sound systems for a stock 90s car. Also quite capable as parts haulers. The rear seats and the passenger seat fold flat, and you’d be surprised how much cargo fits with all the seats down. ~28-30 mpg on the highway on a previous turbo wagon I owned was the norm. They also rarely rust-the rustproofing from factory is fantastic. Most all parts are still available and aftermarket options are relatively affordable. Rockauto and FCPEuro are your friends!
These transmissions rarely give out so I’d think it’s an issue with the cable before I’d really worry about the trans itself. Also, about your lights being on. These cars have daytime running lamps which includes illumination of the rear parking lamps regardless of what position the headlight switch is in. To turn that off, you will have to turn the small plastic screw directly next to the headlight switch. That will turn off the DRLs but still allow for the other two light settings to function as normal. I did this on all of mine to try and save the bulbs.
The shifter knobs are readily available on eBay for 50-60 dollars. Or you could opt for a leather one, spend a little more, and never have to worry about it falling apart again (all of the vinyl ones eventually crack and fall apart like yours).
Couldn’t tell if there was a bit of valve train noise-if it was then it’s likely the oil pickup tube seals starting to go. A bottle of AT-205 reseal seemed to have permanently fixed this issue for me so it’s not a huge deal even if you’re experiencing this. I’d imagine a good quality high mileage oil would do the same.
The code for the radio is available, free of charge, from Volvo’s website. All you need is an email address and your VIN.
I would also do what is called the “PCV glove test” to determine if your PCV system is functioning properly. More info on this can be found on RUclips or any Volvo forum.
These cars certainly have their quirks and issues here and there, but my vote lies with the Volvo. Best of luck!
Mike really needs to see this, I share all the same sentiments as you when it comes to these cars. I daily drive a 2000 V70 myself (the facelifted variant of the 850)
@@noobeenaut Thanks for the vote of confidence! Hoping for many more safe and enjoyable miles to you and your car.
Looked like Mike had fun with pushing his Volvo 😏😅
Benzo is inspecting the progress so far 😂
Much love from KENYA 🇰🇪
Was looking forward to this until I read the title and description. Still looking forward to this but sheesh, you deserve a break here my man...
Randy is your man for mail boxes, he properly sent his one a while back 😉 I got me my first Volvo off Marketplace this year…$3000 CAD, the 2.5t has go some go to it. They really benefit from clean oil. Good to see you Mike!
I like that Duck
Loving the content with this car!
Prayers for the old gril
On the tank, you can drill both ends of the crack and plastic weld the tank. Easy. Practice some plastic welding to save some big bucks.
Mike has done plastic welding in the past.
@Sean006 I know but he doesn't realize what all you can repair with it.
@@WildDigger Yep, by coincidence I was watching latest video from 'Farmcraft101' repairing a cracked chainsaw petrol tank with plastic welding (a hot wire) and some epoxy ('P' something or other). I think Mike likes to do things 'properly' as much as possible...which usually involves getting quite expensive 2nd hand parts. But he does love his cars 👍
Dang! I'm sorry Mike. That sucks Man.
Hopefully it's nothing major.
Mike it’s very possible to have an issue with the shifter cable-the little rubber/plastic grommets basically fall apart-but I’ve never seen one once shifted into drive come out of gear. Almost the way it’s acting, the drive clutches inside the trans are probably smoked. I’ve ran into it a bunch where when they are cold they will move, but soon as the fluid gets warm-it’s a no go. Pull that dipstick and smell the fluid.
Nice you dropp the video today I already finished
my work on my V70I rear springs absorber.
inner bishngs and end links.... this work sucks.
Relaxing now and watch.
Regards from Poland my Friend
👍👍👍👍
Poland!! Very cool. Thx!!
Hope it’s a quick easy and cheap fix Mike 🏴👍🏻👍🏻
Good job Mike. Hope you figure out what is going on with your transmission.
I'm always looking for exercise videos. Pushing the Volvo hits the mark.
Love these 850s! Can’t wait for the next video !
Great content, keep up the great work. 100K subscribers soon.
Holy Oily Spark Plugs Bat Man!
On the plus side, your fuel economy numbers will be great. Tough bringing something back from a long slumber.
Haha!!
Don’t give up Mike ! It maybe the shifter cable you mentioned🤞🤞 You’ve done a great job so far 👍👍
Great video Mike. You will get it fixed buddy keep up the great job!
She came from my home state of Missouri, so that’s a good place that she was at
Fred and Wilma car , Mike 😂😂
Fred Flintstone mode
OH NO! The opening teaser to the video! IM SO SCARED MWM!!!!!
Good job Mike... Range selector sounds like it's jumping out of gear
Update: shortly after completion of this video, Mike had a pacemaker installed
G'afternoon Mike 🤠 . This may be another case of faulty plastic shifter linkage like the Ford probe you & Randy drove from IN back to OK 🤣🤣 ...
Arrrghhh it's always those plastic bits, they should make soft brass upgraded parts for those transmission linkages 😔💔
Nice for me here in sweden to see this❤one of our 850s is a t5
Hi Mike you look like the filentstones you’re amazing you’re huge fan Sean
That bridle plastic is not trust building, guess it's the same with the shifter cable linkage, good that it failed now and not later! So no idiot but the luck of the Irish!
Oh my, good luck 😀
Hello Mike aka Monkey Wrench Mike. Now we're going to change the oil and antifreeze and the sparkplugs on the 1997 Rat Wagon. Then let's hope she runs and drives around the block.
Hey Mike. I know you’re trying to decide between the Volvo and the Mercedes. The part of the driving video you made that shows you driving from the outside is freaking awesome. You need to do that in the Mercedes so we can help you decide my friend!!!!
Great video and work🔥💪
Mike FYI, don’t know which spark plugs you use, but the stock Turbos ONLY want OEM Volvo Turbo spark plugs…
Otherwise she could start running rubbish etc…
Your plastic selector fell off underneath, or the linkage under the gearstick in the cab is loose. Bit of effort required about an hour.
Are you filming yourself using a Drone? Great video... fix the gear problem then send the Volvo on its way... there are plenty of Benz and BMW projects that need your attention ... LOL
Random thing, front and back wheels on driver side are different.....close, but different styles.
Yeah, one is/was a white color
Side light's and volvos 😂 they made them in some place where its darkish a lot n side light's on was strange even here in the 🇬🇧
you have two red lights on, does that mean anything?
Im just here for the duck😂 🪿🪿🪿🪿
DON'T BE SO CHEAP MIKE, with that nice big garage area, buy yourself a cheap lift
Do a compression test while the plugs are out ?
Am sure the tranny is ok, hark to kill an old Volvo tranny on 850's and 240's
Problem with Volvos is that if ONE big thing breaks, it sends the car to the junkyard
Oh no!
Put in high gear Barney
PNP switch needs to be replaced?????
When the gearshifter gets corroded, the gearbox gets stuck in 3 gear and the arrow in the chluster will be seen as a limp home. The auto box in the 850 is not very good, but I prefer it over the crappy manual thats only good for non turbo models, yes our t5 is an auto😊
There’s a Volvo expert here on RUclips, his channel is RobertDiY.
you should contact fellow RUclipsr RobertDIY. He knows Volvos and more specifically 850s like the back of his hand.
Lucky Duck is translating...
Why don't you take it to Volvo dealership to get it inspected? They'll give you a list of what the car needs
I can’t drive it there… lol
Shifter cable is probably the issue
Ok that wagon is uh 😂keep it up Mike we love it 😂
I like the video
Imagine if these cars you have ran perfectly, had no issues, and sold on day one after your video came out. It would be boring, uneventful, and no reason to tune in for excitement. Hang in there as these lame ducks 😂 will get you to the 100k and above.
I always go with the green coolant it is cheaper and works just as well for our vehicles
Some newer vehicles you cannot use the green coolant because it damages the seals in parts of the engine causing leaks and even worse coolant intrusion into the cylinders 😮😮😢😢
What's the Rong with the transmission
Not sure what is wrong with the car . Could that have been the reason it was parked 🤔 IDK. Sorry 🐵🔧Mike 🎬🚘🔥👍
You deserve so much more i sorry you get so far then something else happens please stop picking up vehicles with so much work need , you need a Vehicle that you can tow or move around all the either one's around .And make some $$$ with . To help you with all thou either once .
As seen before shifter cable take a 💩?????
maybe Bottom line, one of the drive axles was broken and this caused the transaxle to not engage.
have you tested and bled the gearbox
love your videos😍
Has be transmission u where driving so even if comes loose not going change gear just going be stuck in drive.
Check out Robert DYI He has a Volvo guy
I’ve watched several of his videos!
Oh I'm bleeding.
Probably just needs a small simple part...like a new transmission. 😂
Yeah it's alive,,! O "no what happened
What kind of camera were you using on that drive video?
Insta360
Does an arrow blink on the dashboard?
The radio code is 2644
jabe dabe do a flinstone volvo car😂😂
how did you get the video that looked like someone was outside the car filming you?
Insta360 camera!
thanks!
❤🥰👍🤘
I understand if it is a bmw or mercedes to get it fix but this old Volvo is a bunch of srabs . Try to restro a manual next time , robots are pretty problematic.
What's the difference?
Hey Mike Lola and Benzo
I'm pretty sure it is the transmission I don't think it's the linkage if it just stops pulling without shifting it then it probably low on fluid or its going out
I’m a simple man. I see a MWM video drop and I watch it right away!
Same here!
Same here.
Me too.
Thanks!!
Same here in Australia 🦘🇦🇺😅
Mike, I love your videos but that music has to go. Please.
That 360 view from the camera looks like you are going sideways 😮 not the best. But you drove it nice to see it run . Sending good vibes on all your vehicles that you are working on.🍀
hi Mike the lights or on because its a volvo thing. some thing to do with lack of sun in Sweden?
The fact that you have your lights on is because you are better seen in traffic then. It has been a law in Sweden for many years. Always the light on. Therefore, all cars sold in Sweden have an automatic light that always lights up when you start the car. I think there are more countries in Europe that have it.
@@Anderslisa90 hi thank you
I love your vids but please omit that HORRID background music
You've got one different wheel on the left rear. It's calles a "Perfo".. it's from the S/V70 classic. The rest is "Columa" as it comes with originally
Sorry buddy
Great video Mike but if you could do less of the music over the top.
Cheers Pat🇦🇺
Time for a manual swap. These cars are so much fun with 5 speed! /)
Nice test push Mike 😂❤
ID10t, kidding
