- It is the end of the school year, and Orangeburg-Wilkinson is still reeling from Dr Peters' news. With just a few weeks to go until graduation, a number of seniors, including Vernon, are still at risk of failing. Can he improve his grades in time to graduate?
Following the birth of his daughter, Rendull is adjusting to fatherhood, but a mistake puts his chances of attending graduation in jeopardy.
Star pupil Jalena continues to struggle to find the funding to attend university and has the responsibility of writing the senior's graduation ceremony speech.
As the school closes for another year, the class of 2016 walk across the stage and into their new lives.

In the early 90's, I ate in Orangeburg Wilkinson's cafeteria and roamed the halls with the parents, aunts and uncles of the kids in this series. My grades were so horrible, I had to repeat the 10th grade and graduated with a 1.7 GPA. The day before leaving for senior trip, my mother announced to my younger sister and I that she had AIDS. By some minor miracle, I went to away to college. I went to DeVry in Atlanta to study electrical engineering. I returned to Orangeburg after one semester to care for her until she died a few months later. I was devastated and lost for many years. Seven years after my mom passed I was also diagnosed with AIDS. It's been a rough road. But by the grace of God, I went on to earn a Bachelor's and a Master's degree, travel the world, start a business and have become an author and public speaker. Like many of the students featured in this series, I was an unmotivated, clueless kid who felt trapped in small town with no real opportunities. After 20 years of living in other cities, I have moved back to Orangeburg to help improve the community that raised me.

Jalena's so intelligent, and I'm rooting for her through it all. I love how her father's so supportive even though he didn't want her to go to UF. "I guess I'll have to drive 6 hours. That's fine, too. Even if I have to stop and take a nap along the way". That's the type of parent every child deserves.❤❤❤

I actually looked her up. Yes, I do stuff like that. They actually graduated in 2016. She looked to be doing well. She is absolutely beautiful and she did go to college......I'm still looking.....

So true this took me back to highschool lol. It's funny to know this is how highschool is for many black kids.
Just people like everybody else at the end of the day. Held to higher standards & given fewer chances to screw up due to double standards, but that's about it. These kids are sweeties who have been through a lot.

4-6 weeks of work in 2 hours, "I may not graduate because of THIS". Because he had all that time to do the right thing, but he chose not to. His decisions got him to that point, not his teachers. Y'all have more support than so many other kids...

I have really enjoyed this series, very well done. It would be great if you did a follow-up/reunion of everyone to see where they're at now. They would all be in their early 20s now.

This is One of the best documentary I've seen for this year. The principal is a father to the school. His guidance is highly appreciated.

It baffles me how back they want to "get out" but either didn't have a plan outside of sports or didn't take their school work seriously. While you CAN change, your behaviors in school can stick with you throughout life.
They’re 17 with little guidance. Most teenagers don’t have it all figured out.
@@aped yes but it’s tough out there they can’t afford to be like that if they want to get out or a better life, they have to work it out and be disciplined as well as focused. That’s the price, no guidance don’t justify the lack of commitment or intention in doing the things the right way.

This last episode is so bittersweet. I really didn't want to see the series end. I wish they would do a follow up special. I want the real life details from their POV and not just the RUclips comments section.
I was a mother at 17, now 20. I never graduated yet. I'm getting my GED but... I have so much respect and applaud these kids. I stayed in school my whole pregnancy as well. It takes a lot of courage, especially if your new to that school (like I was) going in pregnant

It gets better trust me! I had my first at 18 and graduated with honors at 21. Never compare yourself to others and try to stay committed and focused on obtainingyour goals. I am now 31 with my two children. As a single parent, I have refused to give up on achieving my aspiration of becoming a social worker. I am currently a Community Support Worker, while still enrolled in the school of Arts and Science for pre Social Work.

That's not where she wanted to be it's in the show. She clearly said she wanted to go out of state.
At what cost? She could get the same degree debt free then why not. Growing up means not always doing what u want, but doing what's necessary.
College is over rated and started your adult life out debt free is everything.

They probably told her. But, her heart is in it. Like her teacher said " it's going to be tough, but!" " You can do it."
I am so proud of all of them. I want an update on how they are doing today. I hope Jalena graduated University of Florida and I hope everyone else is safe and have their dream careers
This was a very interesting and informative documentary. But since it was filmed in 2016 we need a follow up on these kids. We are invested!!!

Sad that it's the end but I did enjoy each episode. I really hope all of them stayed on the right path. Normally when I watch a series/ and or story like this I have a favorite and this time , they were all my favorite. Who every recored and edited deserves so kind of award it was very inspiration and emotional. you get my vote lol
i wish the counselor or teacher would've told jalena to go to in state school for ayear or two to get her gpa up to maybe get a scholarship or financial aid for u of f later.... colleges aren't going anywhere... but too much debt before graduating college is a horrible idea.

42,000 a year for a U. in Florida?! How is education a right (according to your government) in America when Universities are allowed to hike prices to that level? Sounds like more of a privilege than a right. My sympathies to all the youth in America trying just to get some further education.

A private university might not even cost that much here.
I paid roughly $2800 in total for the whole 3 years getting mine. And that was considered much. Nowadays you pay around $280 for two semesters. That may even include a student ticket enabling you to use public transport for free as long as you're a student, have that ticket and stay within the covered area (which is quite large).

Schools focus so much on colleges and Universities. And forget about trade schools. Jelena is going to have so much debt when she graduates.
I agree my son is 16 and hes on the fence about college one minute he's in next he's out about it and I have informed him about trade schools as well I think thats a great option especially if kids don't /can't attend college bcuz that will allow them to learn valuable skills and in some cases they can take their skills learned and create a business for themselves as well ..kids need to know theres options

I absolutely agree. It’s such an outdated belief to think that going to college is a guaranteed success. Instead is getting in debt and always have to work for someone else. Trade schools are great. They can learn a trade and have their own business. They can invest and sell real estate. They can do so many things with their creativity and hard work. There’s so many ways to be successful and make money.

Rendull is a rapper with a pretty good career. I bet he'll be a household name soon enough! I wish him all the best. It broke my heart when he said he spent 12 years playing basketball and no one offered him a scholarship. You saw the pain in his eyes about that.
Yeah i felt his pain too but i am upset with his parents and coaches for not puting enough pressure on him to do well in his academics at the sane time while playing ball. He needed his academics skills to get through in life.
It’s heartbreaking to see academics wasn’t placed at the front. The entire family was banking on this young man to make it in college and the NBA. That’s too much pressure on a young man. They saw $$$ but not longevity. His education would take him further if he was injured from basketball.

Yes but it is way harder to get into college and to actually pass. At least here in Germany. Not everyone gets to go to college here . You need a certain degree and get sorted in 3 different schools after elementary. Only with an Abitur you can got to college . In the USA anyone with money can
The system is designed to keep the poor poorer, the rich richer, for an average citizen a single health challenge can financially wreck them completely. Survival of the fittest rules. Few have been able to cross the line to survive in the struggle.

High schools brain wash students into going to college or university. They are for profit institutions! I went to college for a business degree and came out with 0 loans but most people don't and it ruins their lives. I'm still not guaranteed a job! Still, I took 4 years to study while I could have been working to make my own business. My relatives came from another country and opened their own car parking business and have made hundreds of thousands of dollars in 3 years. Watching these kids make bad choices hurts. I went to my local community college and then university because it was *"convenient and cheap"* (in FL). Jalena is going to have a life long debt of student loans, surpassing 100k after undergrad graduation for studying out of state. =( Most people who study engineering don't become engineers. I hope she realizes that she needs to continue her studies afterwards and that equals more debt.ahh....it takes years to make good money in your career and your debt is usually bigger than your yearly salary so it keeps accruing interest. And then you have nothing to live on. =( So you might make more than a high school graduate but you have way more expenses than one.
I was thinking the exact same thing. This idea of go to college and you will succeed, should stop being engraved in peoples mind. All it’s doing is getting poor people in debt and always be a worker and not a boss. There’s so many ways to become successful and make money. Like investing and selling real state, starting your own business. That way you won’t need to work for others.
So proud of these kids graduating from OW. I had some college friends that went to OW. I am from Berkeley County but I went to Claflin University and graduated from there in 2007. I seen the different environments around Orangeburg and these kids are not lying. You have to work for what you want even being at college there you have to work. Its not about what you know its who you know. My former pastor is now the mayor of Orangeburg. I am glad to have been there when I was. I have seen people who are from there go to college, thrive, do well while others been there for a few years and transferred to other schools to graduate.

I was in a similar situation. Inner-city NYC public school. I think our dropout rate went up to 60% one year. My freshman class started with approx 900, but only 300 graduated. I loved those teachers. They did their very best for us, with what they had.

I would've as well. As parents it's a long road to graduation if you're involved like you should be and that's partly your achievement as well. That prank was nothing. I've seen way worse, with actual crimes committed (like theft of the principal's car and vandalism) and because the kids were white it was laughed off. When do we ever just allow our kids to be kids?

@@LemonGreenism I respect your opinion, but I will do and say as I please. I made the example because it's tge reality that we face daily in America. Yes, we should do better, yadda yadda yadda. But they're still kids! As mature, honest and focused as I was at 17/18, I still made stupid decisions, just like everyone else including you. Sometimes we have to acknowledge that and remember what it was to be that age. Who didn't want to pull an epic senior prank. It's tradition at some schools, like my alma mater, and as long as no one's gravely injured or dead, just laugh it off. Stop criminalizing childhood and teenage behavior when it's not killing someone. Damn!

I wonder if anybody told Rendull or any other students with no college options about trade school. There are some very lucrative trade school options and often there are grants and other funding sources outside of loans to pay for it. It’s so sad bc they really don’t think they have any other options. Smh
