true, greatest example is when you're hit with a liver shot. People thought that a person crawls voluntarily because of pain, but a person crawls involuntarily a body's reaction to protect the liver and other organs from further damage. This was proven by science, I just forgot the source.
Young players are so lucky to have a resource like Matt always giving them such valuable information! Vids are always top tier, hopefully my channel will be anywhere near as good as yours one day! Keep it up man
I’ve actually used both positions and have noticed the difference. And I’ve noticed that when I bend over, I feel the air moving through my system more efficiently in both directions. But I agree about not looking tired. If I’m officiating I never want to bend over because that looks very unprofessional and makes me look like I’m extremely out of shape. What I do in a game to recover from a hard run or sprint will be to put my arms out to the sides of my body. No hands on hips, but rather pointing to the ground and slightly away. I also take a few really deep breaths. This allows me to expand my lungs and diaphragm without looking like I’m tired or winded.
We appreciate it you as a man because you bring in true facts when making videos and just based on blah blah blah ,& that’s ultimately what I kinda try to incorporate in my vids
Cool! There is one more reason that the bent forward, pseudo-“prone” position speeds recovery; it transiently improves matching between pulmonary blood flow and airation of lung spaces, what in pulmonary physiology is called V/Q matching. Interestingly, this concept has helped us save lives recently of critically ill COVID patients in the ICU. Interesting to me that our bodies know what they need, and instinctively assume this position after a long sprint. Thanks for the great video!
Your videos have given so many players the opportunity to grow and expand their game. Keep making quality content Matt! You’re an inspiration to all of us :)
The 4 minutes Matt spent explaining this was probably the most efficiently-used 4 minutes of the several HUNDRED hours I have spent on RUclips. Very useful knowledge.
I remember reading that study and started doing it in training and feeling alot better. However last year during a competition our first match was against the favourites to win, i remember working my socks off in the midfield and helped the squad go 2-0 up and in the 75th min i put hands on knees and the coach made the change when i asked what for he said i looked burnt. Thought nothing of it at the moment but after a few mins the guy in the midfield got into his groove and it costed us the game we lost 2-4 was gutted. So yes i understand the sign of weakness but i just blive players and coaches should be alot more educated about these stuff.
Hey Matt.. you just made me realize that I don't have a technique to catch my breath I don't really put my hands on my knees or rest at all and I actually rarely get out of breath this is because of two reasons: 1- I always do stamina workouts and play different sports when I don't have a match (basketball, Tennis..etc) 2- it's all about how you divide your breath and your energy throughout the game.. when to sprint when to slow down when to rest playing one touch passes so you can have a little bit of energy for the whole 90 mins. AND actually I think if you started doing the hands on the knees technique.. it will become a habit and you may not care who says that you are tired in high school or amateur level.. but when you're in a tryout or trial.. you will realize that your body got used to catching the breath doing the hands on the knees technique so if you resist your body's desire you feel like you can't recover or catch your breath and if you do it.. it's 90% chance that you'e not gonna be scouted or chosen. That's my opinion ✋🏻😁 Thanks Matt all Love ❤
"No brain no gain." Well made video!! Huge thanks to your effort and knowledge that you put into your videos to make them the most helpful as possible!!
When I’m playing softball/baseball I fill in for people when I run. I’m not the fastest, but I’m smart and know how to get in safe. Putting your hands on your knees helps ALOT!!
That was really interesting, Matt. I literally just watched this with my son less than five minutes after doing a hard session with him and telling him to raise his arms. It definitely gives us something to consider.
Hahah, 25 years back I wondered about this recovery position but never found a satisfying explanation. Makes a lot of sense as to how you explained it. Thanks!
I would love to show this video to my coach, in my practice we aren’t aloud do either of these positions. The rule is you get punched in the ribs by a teammate if you’re caught doing either of these
Great Video Matt! Honestly the best thing i use is staying up and strong fight the urge to hunch over and breath deeep! In your nose out your mouth! It’s good if you are pushing yourself to that level of fatigue! Builds fitness! You never want the coach to see your tired, it’ll get you far! Thanks for this one Matt!
Oh my gosh thank you so much for uploading again I am just about to go to the track and we cannot turn on post notifications so when I went on RUclips I saw you and I was really looking forward to this video
Those suicides I ran had me gassing no lie lol. Hand on head really helps me as well. Calms me down immediately after a hard session of intense fitness.
I started playing a bit of football again after not playing for a while, my stamina is low as, I already got tired after 2 minutes. My tackling some how has gotten better when I’ve never even practiced
I think the best alternative to putting your hands or your knees, especially during a game is, try breathing IN your nose, and OUT the mouth. It's kinda harder to do that when your tired but, you just have to control your breathing, as much as you can. :)
Matt you should tryout for a championship club in England. Even though the level is high, it's a level lower than the premier league. The average salary is £8000 a week, which in a year you could make £416,000. That's more than the average MLS player and it's the second division in England. But in England the players have extreme physical ability, where as in La Liga it's more about technical ability. I think you have good athleticism so you should try it out.
I love that you made a video about that!h I just though about that hands-above-the-head-pose after I learned about the respiratory system for my studies a few weeks ago. And I actually did wonder why everybody always told us footballers to do so. Thanks!
If you breathe heavy with your hands over your head then move with your hands onto your knees, it feels so much better. It's always entertaining how much coaches complicate things.
Interesting. Thank you for the explanation with the supporting data. If I can only find the person who told me to put my hands behind my head years ago! Going to try the hands on the knee on my recovery tomorrow
Problem is every coach out there tells you to put your hands over your head and players usually get in trouble for the hands on the knees and end up having to run even more.
U gave to much knowledge in such a less amount of time thank you matt and I love you too play one day in MLS good luck on your journey and stay safe 🙂🙂
I love how Matt's 2 minute Tuesdays are never 2 minutes 😂
Nije istina
lol
5-10 minute tuesdays pretty much 😂
Lol
The more knowledge we get the more likely we are to Become Elite
And we do this naturally as a reaction, it’s instinctual. The body is more intelligent than we think. Simplicity at its finest
❤❤❤
Exactly, our body known what’s best. Else we would’ve been going to hands on head tech.
true, greatest example is when you're hit with a liver shot. People thought that a person crawls voluntarily because of pain, but a person crawls involuntarily a body's reaction to protect the liver and other organs from further damage. This was proven by science, I just forgot the source.
When In games after a couple of sprints i do the hands on the knees technique but i hide it by “fixing” my cleats or socks. Honestly works😂
That's trueee
Yooo mate I’m going to start doing that 😂👍
Thanks for the tip
FACTS
I don't have laces 😅

I love 5:24 minute Tuesdays.
It’s instinct, that’s why every player does this
@Dias06 this is what has been said.

This man is just a bucket full of knowledge. What a legend Matt is.

can you give proper research evidence or article for it
Crazy right, It's almost like God knew what he was doing, giving us those "natural instincts." 😉
So excited that "2 minute" Tuesdays are back!
Your videos have given so many players the opportunity to grow and expand their game. Keep making quality content Matt! You’re an inspiration to all of us :)
I was hoping this would detail how to quickly get back into shape after quarantine 😂

if my coach sees us put are hands on are knees he makes us do more runs.

LOVE YOUR TWO MINUTE TUESDAY MATH, WE HAVE BEEN FOLLOWING YOUR CHANNEL SINCE 2015 AND THIS VIDEOS SHOULD BE MORE POPULAR!!!!
When you needed this, and 7 people are first😂😂
😂😂
If I’m tired I make it look like I’m fixing my shin guards, so I can still do it but not show it like I’m tired. 😂
"No brain no gain." Well made video!! Huge thanks to your effort and knowledge that you put into your videos to make them the most helpful as possible!!
Congrats on your Transfer, it was cool to see your excitement and how you maneuvered through what you can't control, well done!!
Amazing! You can see the slow progresion in his vids over the Years, my man nothing but respect.
The best series from you quick to the point ❕❕
When I’m playing softball/baseball I fill in for people when I run. I’m not the fastest, but I’m smart and know how to get in safe. Putting your hands on your knees helps ALOT!!
This makes sense because why is it always so natural for all of us to instinctively go hands on knees when we’re tired!
*Do what your body tells you to do! Hands on knees is subconscious movement so of course it is the best way to recover*
You're a blessing in the football industry. All the best in your career. You'll definitely reach MLS!
Keep on making these two minute Tuesday’s!! They are the best
That was really interesting, Matt. I literally just watched this with my son less than five minutes after doing a hard session with him and telling him to raise his arms. It definitely gives us something to consider.
Yessss Matt! Just what i needed during these times where individuals training is soooo important!
Love this two minute Tuesday keep it up!
Very helpful tip
The hands on the knees is a better way because your body knows what’s best for you.
Thanks for bringing it back we love the two minute Tuesday
So glad these are back, Matt!!!
That’s interesting. I’m going to have to start doing that in training now 🙌🏾
seriously the most quality footy vids on youtube
love that the two minute Tuesdays are back
Loved this video, I have had tons of coaches like Matt tell me that I shouldn’t have my hands on my knees, but guess who just got proved wrong!
Hahah, 25 years back I wondered about this recovery position but never found a satisfying explanation. Makes a lot of sense as to how you explained it. Thanks!

Doobie 12 you need a new coach ASAP!!🤣
so are you just not supposed to recover? whats wrong with your coach
He would rather us recover in a way that shows no weakness I guess😂
Doobie 12 I have had that experience with hands on hips, is it the same for you!
Youre a beast bro. Would have never known about this otherwise. Keep up this kinda content
Great Video Matt! Honestly the best thing i use is staying up and strong fight the urge to hunch over and breath deeep! In your nose out your mouth! Thanks Matt, lately I’ve been struggling with my stamina and this video happen to pop up
I need to show my coach this video to show him I’ve been doing the right thing the whole time
so glad two minute tuesdays are back! its such a grat section
Finally 🎉🎉
Matt, i appriciate your work keep going
if my coach ever sees me with my hands on my knees, im give him the link to this vid XDDD
The best recovery position is hands on knees. The on head is more chest breathing.
Oh my gosh thank you so much for uploading again I am just about to go to the track and we cannot turn on post notifications so when I went on RUclips I saw you and I was really looking forward to this video
Track Tuesday
I think staying up is more about trying to not look tired and maybe even convincing yourself that you‘re not
I love the quality and depth you go into this videos. It truly helps!!🙏🔥
I feel like I should show my manager this video 🤣 I want every edge to winning, get the whole team recovering faster🤷🏾♂️
Those suicides I ran had me gassing no lie lol. Hand on head really helps me as well. Calms me down immediately after a hard session of intense fitness.

My man with a banger once again
Glad you did this video bro
Love these kind of informative videos Matt!
I love these two min videos!
Great video idea! I play soccer in a weekend league and I play in back to back games for 5 and a half hours! I needed this.
Just amazing dude, great one.
Loved it.
Matt great points I need to apply this with my son
Two minute Tuesdays are always longer but the intro music is the best on RUclips
Yesss
My favorite RUclipsr
the body knows what it needs
A trick that works for me is before a sprint just don’t breathe and wait until your done unless it’s 50+ yards
Great video man I learnt a lot from it, keep doing your thing and keep being great!
I think the best alternative to putting your hands or your knees, especially during a game is, try breathing IN your nose, and OUT the mouth. It's kinda harder to do that when your tired but, you just have to control your breathing, as much as you can.

Thanks dude! Also Pranayama and Yoga helps a lot!
Love 2 mins Tuesday’s!!! ❤️
I’m with ya!
This will help me so much! Thank you Matt! 👍🏼
To every coach who said to “get them chopping” (move in place) for having my hands on my knees I’ll see you in court
Great video as always!
