One thing you failed to mention is the old fashion nostalgia ice cream maker has a better tasting ice cream overall. Much smoother, rich consistency, next time do a tasting comparisons.

We always made homemade ice cream on the 4th of July family gatherings--my aunt had a churn with an electric motor. The problem was they always made banana ice cream which I didn't like much. I have the old wooden bucket churn with a hand crank--the steel rings that hold it together rusted over the years but it still works. You really get a workout with it, but I guess after you burn all those calories you don't have to feel so guilty about eating ice cream! I like making ice cream in the Vitamix--it is so much easier and healthier because you make it with frozen fruit or frozen milk instead of heavy cream and eggs.

FYI The extra stuff on the gelato blade is because gelato has less fat than ice cream, so ice crystals form more easily, and those break up the ice crystals.
And it's not the freon that needs to settle if a compressor is stored on it's side. It's the oil for the compressor motor. Running it too soon is like running your car without oil.

I love the Cuisinart ice 100. Being able to do 3 icecream batches in one night instead of 3 days is amazing

Thanks for such a thorough review, Amy. I have the Donvier ice cream maker. They were popular about 25 years ago, but I don't know if they're still available. It's the type where the cylinder gets frozen (similar to the one that you show for the Cuisinart model), and then there is a hand-crank system. It works OK, but I've heard that the old method with the rock salt is still the best method for a creamier product..

I think if I bought the wood bucket one I would put either a clear lacquer or a polyurethane finish over the wood to inhibit moisture getting into the wood which would help keep it from molding.

I've seen quite of few Cuisinart or Salton electric ice cream makers (the kind with a freezer bowl) in thrift stores. It was the round white older model but it's the same--so you can get one pretty cheap if you shop around. Sometimes you'll see just the freezer bowl so you could get an extra bowl, too. They were a popular wedding gift and some people just get rid of them after a while. The round one is actually smaller overall so it's better for storage.

None of those look like the one we used when I was a kid although that wood bucket looks like the closest. We had a plastic bucket and it had no motor as it had to be cranked by hand with a crank handle. Grandaddy always cranked it and set some towels over top of it and then had one of us kids sit atop the bucket on the towels while he cranked the handle. I guess we were the original "dead end" kids, lol.

I have the freezer bowl type Cuisinard ice cream maker; I returned the first one and was sent the second one. Both have not worked. I did freeze the bowl over 24 hours, chilled the whipping cream ice cream recipe before putting it in the ice cream maker. After 50 minutes I still did not have ice cream. The liquid in the bowl was frozen as it did not slosh around, the bowl was extremely cold and did turn, so what is the problem? I thought the first one was just a fluke, but now the second one did the same thing.

Sorry to hear that it didn't work for you. I have had pretty good luck with mine. Have you tried the compressor type? All of them give you soft serve consistency that you have to freeze.

Too much sugar in your base or too much alcohol - if you add some for flavoring can inhibit it from freezing or cause you to have a lot of crystals. How cold is your freezer, it should be between 0 to -10 farenheit.

Try freezing the bowl upside down. It's help freeze the base more evenly. Also Refrigerate the ice cream mix prior to churning. Should come out soft serve scoopable but may be slightly melt. Freeze in air tight container for a couple hours to harden a bit more.

Learn how to make semifreddo. It's a little different then your typical ice cream but worth it..
But I have both a manual crank style and the KitchenAid attachment. My preference honestly is the manual. It takes a little longer, but I don't have to worry about remembering to freeze that canister. With the manual I just need ice, rocksalt and ice cream base... And if you have kids with you when you decide to use it they love to take over that job.. Only issue is I NEVER have any left over to firm up in the freezer.
But learn to make the semifreddo.

Very informative about the compressor care in not storing it wrong. As the oil leaks out of the compressor. I never knew abut the ice cream containers! I am looking for a Kitchen Aid Ice cream maker that attaches to the Power Hub and comes with the hand crank too. And I would LOVE an old Hit or Miss motor Ice Cream Maker.

I don't know what it is, but their seems to be a Ice cream maker shortage. All the none name brands like Ostler which is a cheap brand is selling on amazon for $400 All the Nostalgia ice cream makers are also going up in $$$. Same with all the other brands except the really cheap ones like Hamilton beach Von chef or Dash. Not that if you want something quick, those brands are great, but they won't last.
